Chapter 5

Author: uu
Isla took a deep breath, propped herself up, and looked at me with careful tenderness.

"I was wrong, Nate. Can you give me one more chance? I'll file for divorce with Damien tomorrow. I swear I don't have feelings for him.

"It was really just so he could take wedding leave. I should have thought about how it would make you feel.

"Once the divorce is done, I'll cut off his sponsorship completely. I won't have any contact with him ever again. Okay?"

Looking into her eyes, so earnest and sincere, I felt something deep inside me start to give. Maybe it was because she'd never had a normal family, never learned right from wrong the way most people did growing up. Maybe she'd just made a mistake.

Maybe I owed her a second chance.

Once the thought took root, it spread and wouldn't stop. Finally, worn down by her relentless softness, I nodded.

"End things with him completely, and then we'll talk about us."

Isla let out a breath of relief and buried her face against my chest.

"Nate, I love you. I only love you."

She held onto my arm all night like she was afraid I'd disappear. Every time I shifted or turned over, she startled awake.

I didn't sleep at all. My mind wouldn't stop racing, and the last thought I had before morning was that if she followed through on what she'd promised, I was willing to give her a chance—to give our seven years and our baby a chance.

Early the next morning, Isla put on a formal dress and headed out. Before she left, she came to the bedroom, pressed a kiss to my forehead, and said softly, "Nate, wait for me."

I sat up the moment I heard the front door close. I was exhausted from a sleepless night, but I wanted to be awake when she got back.

I didn't expect to be waiting all day.

By the time the sky started getting dark, I picked up my phone and called her. Once, twice, three times. Every call went unanswered.

A bad feeling settled in my gut. I threw on a jacket and headed straight to the courthouse, only to find it had already closed for the day. I was about to leave when I noticed two women chatting on the sidewalk near the building next door.

"Oh, you should've seen it. I was out walking my dog this morning and there was a couple arguing right outside the courthouse.

"It sounded like the woman wanted the divorce and the man didn't. He was crying his eyes out. A whole crowd gathered to watch."

"So what happened? Did they go through with it?"

The other woman asked exactly what I wanted to know. I held my breath and stood perfectly still as the first one shook her head, looking a little sorry about it.

"No. The woman couldn't go through with it in the end. He talked her into leaving with him.

"If you ask me, when the feelings aren't there anymore, there's no point dragging it out. It's better to split and move on."

The rest of their conversation faded into noise. All I could hear was what she'd just said, echoing over and over.

Then my phone buzzed. It was a text from Isla.

"Nate, everything went smoothly. Something came up at the office, so I'm working late. I'll be home a little later."

Carter continued, "Well, you didn't say anything and I didn't ask, so I figured you were fine. You are fine, right?"I nodded and smiled. "If you don't give me something to keep me busy, I might not be."The next day, Carter put me in a design role at the company and loaded me up with work. He knew that my dream, ever since I was a kid, had always been to design my own products.I didn't complain. I threw every ounce of time and energy I had into the job. The beginning was rough, and I stumbled through a lot of mistakes, but it got easier with time. The sense of accomplishment kept growing, and for the first time in my life, I realized that the satisfaction of building something with my own hands was far greater than anything a good relationship or a good partner had ever given me.Three months later, I finished my first product. It passed inspection and made it to market, and Carter gave me two weeks off to rest."Don't say your brother doesn't take care of you. Three months is

Isla's confidence slowly crumbled into panic the longer I stood there. When I still didn't move, she ignored every staring face in the lounge, grabbed my hand, and tried to force the ring onto my finger."I'll be good to you. I mean it."I yanked my hand free and stepped back, putting distance between us. The ring slipped from her grip and bounced across the floor, rolling until it disappeared under one of the lounge couches.Isla's eyes were raw and red as she dropped to her knees and reached under the couch, straining with everything she had to fish it out, but she couldn't reach it.It was just like us. No matter how hard she tried to salvage things, there was no getting it back. She finally gave up and sank back on her heels, tears streaming down her face. She stared up at me like an abandoned child, completely motionless.I closed my eyes. When I opened them again, everything was clear."I don't want to marry you."Isla, we're already over. Do you remember? It was right h

"Without me, you wouldn't even be in this world. Everything you have is because of me."The two faces overlapped in my mind, the one from the dream and the one from that night, until I could barely tell which version of Isla was real.I woke up at 5:00 am. The images from the dream were still lingering, and it took me a moment to realize that none of it had been real.It was just a dream. Everything was already over.I packed my bags, checked out of the hotel, and headed to the airport. Carter texted me with my flight details and said he'd be there to pick me up. I replied with a quick okay, and a notification popped up at the top of my screen from the couples' tracking app."Your partner has logged in."I hadn't even realized the app could tell when the other person came online. I went in, unlinked the account, and deleted the app. While I was sitting in the airport lounge waiting for my flight, Isla called again. Figuring this might be the last time we'd ever speak, I picked u

I listened to everything Isla had to say before I finally spoke, voice flat."Isla, I think you've misunderstood. What I cared about was never whether you and Damien actually slept together. What I care about is whether your heart stayed where it was supposed to be. And it didn't.""It did! I never had feelings for Damien, not—""Isla!" I cut her off, cold and sharp. I was done playing games. "You really don't see it? Everything you did for him, the way you treated him, it's the same thing you did for me, a hundred times over."You've been doing it since the day you started sponsoring him. How does that not count?"Maybe you don't love him. Maybe I'm still the one you love. Maybe he was just a novelty. But the second your heart drifted, even for a moment, it was already over."Isla, there's no going back. Stop trying to fix this. It's embarrassing."By the end, there was nothing but silence on her end.I paused, sighed, and was about to hang up when a broken, choked sound came

"I know."My voice was calm. Damien clearly hadn't expected that, because he paused for a beat before laughing even louder."Oh, so you already knew? No wonder you left so easily. At least you know when you've lost."Think about it. If Isla thought getting married was no big deal, why didn't she marry you in seven years? And why did she say yes to me the second I brought it up?"When I didn't respond, Damien didn't seem to care. He just kept going."It's because she stopped loving you a long time ago. You didn't actually think you were the love of her life, did you? If she'd met me sooner, you never would've been in the picture."Anyway, it all worked out. You're gone, and Isla and I are planning the wedding. Thanks for doing all the heavy lifting, Nate. I'll be the one enjoying it."By the end, I was laughing too.Damien heard it and got angry. "What's so funny? Don't tell me you think Isla actually misses you. She just wants to track you down and tear into you for what you sa

Isla still wouldn't give up trying to explain. I looked at the face I'd once loved so much and delivered the words she dreaded most, slow and deliberate."Isla, no wonder nobody wanted you."Love, when it went far enough, turned into something vicious. I'd heard that before, but I only understood it now.Behind me, Isla finally dropped the mask. My words broke something open, and she started saying whatever came to mind."Nate, you think you're such a catch? Seven years and you want to know why I never married you? Because you're old. Damien is so much younger than you. What could you possibly offer that he can't?"Without me, you wouldn't have lasted a day in this world. You rode my coattails for seven years, and all I did was find someone else. Everyone makes that mistake. What's your problem with it?"That last line stopped me mid-step. I turned around, looked at the woman falling apart in front of me, and nodded with a quiet laugh."You're right. Without you, I wouldn't be i
