Chapter 2

Author: Cherry Sauce
My breath hitched. That bag was one of only 50 worldwide, and it had disappeared from my walk-in closet half a year ago.

Cosmo told me he'd accidentally scratched it while he was getting something, so he ended up throwing it away. Then, he asked a friend to buy me another one. At the time, I was touched by his sincerity.

"Mommy." Korra suddenly tugged at my sleeve and chirped, "That lady's necklace looks just like yours!"

My eyes shifted to Callista's neck. A delicate rose-gold chain held a dainty airplane-shaped pendant, its wings encrusted with pavé diamonds.

It was the fifth-anniversary gift I'd specially commissioned from a designer. Our initials were engraved on the inside.

"It really does," I said dryly.

Callista's smile finally froze for a split second before she composed herself. "That's impossible! My husband had this custom-made for me. He said it holds a beautiful meaning, like he's flying a plane and taking me around the world."

Cosmo had told me the exact same thing at our fifth-anniversary dinner. He said once Korra was a little older, he would take us around the world.

That night, he had fastened this necklace around my neck and told me it was one of a kind, much like our love.

The day the necklace went missing, he had turned the whole house upside down to look for it. In the end, he had held me and said, "What's gone is gone. I'll get an even better one custom-made for you."

A month later, an even more lavish necklace, adorned with larger diamonds, appeared in my jewelry box. He'd had it custom-made through a friend overseas. Naturally, it was bought with the allowance I gave him.

He had given my belongings to his mistress and used my own money to buy replacements for me. My stomach churned when I realized that.

"Are you not feeling well?" Callista finally noticed that something was off about me.

"I'm just a little airsick." I forced a smile and accepted a glass of water from the flight attendant.

I swallowed a mouthful of warm water and forced my voice to remain steady. "How long have you been married to your husband?"

Callista froze for a moment before an awkward expression flashed across her face. "We aren't married yet."

Perhaps she caught the brief flicker of astonishment that flashed across my face, because she hurriedly added, "Don't look down on me just yet. He doesn't have any feelings for his wife at all!"

My fingers abruptly tightened around the glass until my knuckles turned white.

"He told me his family pressured him into it. That woman was only after his status. She insisted on marrying into his family." Her lips curled in disdain.

"He said she's dull as dishwater, and being with her is pure torture every single day. He said it was unbearable. If he hadn't met me, he doesn't know how he ever would have survived."

Right after saying that, she looked genuinely heartbroken for Cosmo, as though he was the greatest victim in this twisted relationship.

After hearing that, a tempest raged inside me.

I was a gold digger? Cosmo had actually told her that I was the one who insisted on marrying into his family?

I still remembered the first time I had brought him home to meet my family. He had stood awkwardly in our living room, wearing a shirt so washed-out it had almost lost its color.

He came from a humble background. His parents were ordinary factory workers. He had worked his hardest just to get into an aviation academy.

After graduation, he spent several years working ground operations at the airport before grinding his way into a low-level flight officer assistant position. Had he not used that decent-looking face of his to pursue me relentlessly, how could he possibly have the glamorous life he enjoys today?

I couldn't bear to see his potential go to waste, so I begged Dad to use his connections and pull some strings for him, helping him climb all the way to the position of captain. I felt for his humble origins, so I spared no expense when it came to him. I gave him the kind of life he could never have dreamed of before.

Later that afternoon, Cathaya Airline held an emergency press conference. Dad attended in person and announced, "Following a resolution by the board of directors, Cosmo Smith's employment will be terminated with immediate effect. We'll also hold him accountable for the losses caused by his abuse of authority. At the same time, we'll fully cooperate with the police investigation."…A week later, the prosecutor's office charged Cosmo with theft, endangering public safety, and dereliction of duty. Because the evidence was conclusive, the case moved swiftly through the legal process. On the day of the hearing, I deliberately wore a black suit and sat in the gallery with Korra. When Cosmo was escorted in by the bailiffs, his eyes never left us. He had lost a lot of weight. His eyes were sunken, and he had long since lost his former glory. When the prosecutor read the indictment, Cosmo abruptly sprang to his feet and yelled in our direction, "I know I messed up, Rosalie! Give me anot

By the time I reached the kindergarten, Korra was sobbing in her teacher's arms. Her little face was streaked with tears. The moment she saw me, she threw herself into my arms. "Mommy! Daddy was so scary just now… He insisted on taking me with him!" Suppressing my anger, I gently comforted Korra. The principal handed me the security footage. Cosmo's face was twisted as he yanked at Korra, paying no mind to her cries. "He claimed he wanted to take Korra to see his mother," the principal said quietly. "It didn't sit right with us, so we intercepted him."I held Korra tightly in my arms, my anger nearly boiling over. I couldn't believe Cosmo had the nerve to come after Korra. He had officially crossed the line. After calming Korra down, I contacted my lawyer. "I want to file for a restraining order. He's not allowed anywhere near my daughter!" Unfortunately, while my lawyer was preparing the paperwork, an even worse incident occurred. …Late one night a week later, my phone

In the middle of the night, I sat alone in the bedroom, flipping through our wedding album. How had the young man with such clear eyes in those photos turned into the despicable man he was today? Before I knew it, tears trickled down my cheeks. Still, I knew these weren't tears of sorrow but the kind that came when I had finally let go for good. …Early the next morning, I received a call from the cops. "Ms. Beaumont, we've formally opened an investigation. Based on the purchase receipts and photos you provided, we've preliminarily confirmed that several pieces of jewelry in Callista's possession do belong to you. We'll summon Callista in for questioning immediately." The news that a formal investigation had been opened spread through Cathaya Airline like wildfire. I sat on the couch in my home study, watching the email notifications continuously pop up on my computer screen. Dad's assistant reported respectfully, "Mr. Beaumont, as you instructed, we've suspended all of Co

Cosmo hurried after us. "Wait for me, Rose. I'll come home after my shift and explain everything—" I stopped in my tracks and turned back to look at him, a cold smile tugging at the corners of my lips. "You want me to wait for you at home? Do you really think you can still go back to that home, Cosmo?"As I carried Korra out of the police station, I could feel Cosmo's despairing gaze burning into my back. Korra wept in my arms. "Mommy, why doesn't Daddy want us anymore?" "It's not that Daddy doesn't want us. Daddy made a mistake." I gently stroked her hair. "Remember, when you make a mistake, you have to face the consequences." As soon as we walked out of the airport, I spotted the car Dad had sent waiting by the curb. The driver respectfully opened the car door. "Mr. Beaumont sent me to pick you up, Ms. Beaumont."After getting into the car, I immediately called Dad. "Have you gotten to the bottom of everything, Dad?"Dad's firm voice came through the phone. "I have. Cosm

Cosmo went rigid. His face, which was usually calm and composed in the cockpit, was now filled with terror and disbelief. His mouth hung open slightly, as if he wanted to say something, but he couldn't make a sound.Callista followed right behind him, cockily linking her arm through Cosmo's. She shot me a defiant look. "That's her, Cosmo! That's the madwoman who slapped me on the plane. Tell the cops to lock her up right now!"The police officer on duty explained, "Mr. Smith, your wife has accused this woman of causing a disturbance and assaulting her on the plane. We need to get a clear account of what happened." Cosmo finally snapped back to reality. He abruptly flung Callista's hand away, his face drained of all color. "It's a misunderstanding! This is all a misunderstanding!" "A misunderstanding?" I sneered before taking a step forward. "Why don't you tell the officer here who I am, Cosmo?"Callista shrieked, "She's a lunatic. Hurry up and tell him, Cosmo!"Sweat beaded acr

Then, Callista turned to the security officers, her tone domineering. "What are you waiting for? Seize this woman right now and hand her over to the cops the moment we touch down!" The security officer eyed me with a troubled look. "Ma'am, if you refuse to apologize, we might really have to ask you to move to the isolated seats in the back." "I haven't done anything wrong, so why should I apologize?" I asked coldly. "That woman, on the other hand, publicly insulted me. She's the one who should apologize to me." Noticing that I refused to back down, the flight attendant had no choice but to contact the cockpit again. The response came back almost instantly this time. "The captain has instructed that, to ensure the safety of the passengers, security is to immediately escort the disruptive passenger out of the business-class cabin. You are authorized to use force if necessary." The security officer sighed and gestured toward the aisle. "Ma'am, please cooperate with us." The pi
