Chapter 4

Autor: Perfect Timing
Melinda's face went pale with fear. "Ms. Ashley, why are you here?"

I looked toward the person standing in the doorway. She was wearing a silk nightdress, her hair smooth and neatly done. She looked like she was living a pampered life, down to the last detail.

I glanced down at myself. All I had on was a five-dollar plain cotton T-shirt. My hair was dry and split at the ends, while my arms were thin and twig-like. Compared to the socialite in front of me, I didn't look like part of the Reid family at all.

Just as I was thinking that, she suddenly let out a cold laugh and slapped Melinda across the face. "This is my house. Since when do I need your permission to walk around? You're just a maid. Who do you think you are, talking to me like that?"

She was arrogant and overbearing, showing none of the fragility she usually displayed around the Reids.

I caught a flicker of malice in her eyes, as if she were about to strike again. I instinctively stepped in front of Melinda.

She paused before flashing me a taunting smile. "Summer, looks like you still don't understand your place in this house."

She picked up a bowl nearby and smashed it hard on the floor. The sharp sound echoed clearly through the quiet night.

The moment it sounded like someone was coming downstairs, the same girl who had been acting so high and mighty suddenly smacked herself hard across the face and dropped to the floor. Tears came on cue, and when she opened her mouth again, her voice shook with the kind of practiced desperation you'd expect from a seasoned actress.

"Summer, why did you hit me?"

The footsteps outside sped up.

The same three people I'd seen that afternoon appeared at the door of the dark room again, and once more, they formed a shield around Ashley.

"Ash, are you okay? What happened?"

Ashley clutched her cheek and whimpered, "I thought Summer must be starving since she skipped dinner, so I brought her something to eat. But when I opened the door, Melinda was already here. They said I was gloating and that I shouldn't even be in the Reid residence.

"Dad, Mom, Liam, if I go back to the countryside, will Summer stop being mad at me?"

Seeing her fearful expression, my parents immediately flared with anger. "Summer, you really are crazy! How dare you lay a hand on Ash!"

They were furious, as if I'd committed some unforgivable crime.

Melinda stepped in front of me, trying to explain, "It's not like that. I'm the one who brought the oatmeal!"

Liam let out a cold laugh. "Oh? So you're saying Ash is lying?

"Melinda, we only hired you because you begged us to let you see Ash. We let you in because you're her biological mother. Now, it's clear why Summer turned out this way, always lying and stirring up trouble. It must've been your influence!"

I looked at Melinda, and that strange familiarity I felt earlier finally made sense. She was once my mother.

Melinda stayed in front of me. She wasn't particularly broad-shouldered, but it felt like she was trying to shield the entire sky above me.

"Sunny's a good child. She's never done anything wrong. It's all of you who are blind, even after she's done so much for you!

"Mrs. Reid, Sunny's the one who gets up before dawn to prepare the medicine you take for your headaches every single day. Don't you know that?

"Mr. Bobby, Sunny learned massage techniques just to ease your stress whenever you needed it. Have you forgotten?

"And Mr. Liam, every time your stomach problems flare up, who's the one who takes care of you? It's always Sunny! She's just a young lady!"

As Melinda listed every detail, my so-called family froze for a moment, as if they were actually trying to remember whether I had done all that for them.

Seeing their hesitation, Ashley panicked.

"If it weren't for me, Summer wouldn't have been ignored by everyone. It's all my fault. I shouldn't have come back at all! She's so perfect that even my biological mother is on her side. Of course, you all should love her more."

Tears streamed down her face as she grabbed a shard of broken porcelain and stumbled upstairs, crying. Her movements looked desperate, like she might actually hurt herself.

The Reids went into a frenzy.

Sapphire turned to Melinda with fury. "How heartless can you be? All you care about is Summer, even though Ash is your own daughter! You're just a maid. Who do you think you are, meddling in the Reid family's business? Pack your things and get out!"

  • I Came Back Without Memories, They Came Back with Regrets   Chapter 10

When I finally woke up, Mom was slumped over the side of my bed, fast asleep. She looked worn out with the dark circles under her eyes, like she'd been up for nights. My chest warmed with emotion. I didn't want to wake her, so I just watched her for a long, long time.Eventually, she stirred and opened her eyes. "Sunny, you finally woke up!"Her eyes turned red. She moved like she wanted to hug me but then remembered I was hurt and settled for gently patting my head instead. "You nearly scared me to death. You still have me. Don't ever do something like that again.""Mom, do you ever think of me as a burden?"Mom snapped, "That's complete bullshit! You've never been a burden. Sunny, if the Reid family doesn't believe you, that's on them. They're blind. I know you're a kind and deserving person. Don't let the people who hurt you define you. Listen to me instead, alright?"I nodded. My face itched, and when I lifted my hand, I realized it was wet with tears.…After half a mont

I held back the urge to slap Liam. "Let my mom go."Liam let out a cold laugh. "Listen to you, calling her 'Mom' like you mean it. Did you forget? You're one of the Reids. You're not the daughter of a maid.""Isn't the maid's daughter living in your home? What, does the Reid family get to take both kids and call it fair?" I fired right back without backing down.Liam looked irritated, and the people he brought became even more reckless.Seeing Mom's hard work getting destroyed and her being pinned down, tears welled up in my eyes. I started trembling uncontrollably. "Liam! What do you even want from me?""Come with me to the hospital. Ash found out you ran away and is threatening to jump. Once she calms down, you can go back to the Reid residence and enjoy a pampered life. Isn't that how it should be anyway?"I glanced at Mom. She shook her head, begging me not to agree. But I couldn't ignore the mess all over the ground. Just yesterday, we were talking about saving up to turn th

Bobby, Sapphire, and Liam had barely walked out the door when I followed Melinda, no, my mom, and got into the car to go home.Mom lived alone in a small house on the outskirts of the city. She told me that her ex-husband left her because he didn't want a daughter. She had planned to raise me well on her own, but fate had other ideas, and somehow, Ashley and I were switched at birth.Still, she kept saying things would get better from here on out.She set up a little breakfast stall outside the nearby elementary school, and I helped her every day. We didn't earn much, but it was more than enough for the two of us.After leaving the Reid family, I felt like a weight had been lifted. I was having regular mealtimes too, and after half a month, my cheeks had even filled out a bit.During those two weeks, my phone never rang once.Sapphire and Liam talked big about making it up to me, but in reality, they forgot about me just like always. By the time they finally realized I was gone a

Sapphire looked at me like I'd just broken her heart, casting me this wounded, pitiful glance. "Summer, I know you want us to pay more attention to you, but you can't throw tantrums like this. Ash is still emotionally unstable. Listen to me and just apologize to her, okay?"I ignored her and turned to Melinda. "Mom, let's go."Sapphire had probably never seen me this impatient before. She pointed a trembling finger at me, struggling for words. "You… You…"When she realized I was really leaving, she let out a cold snort. "Fine. You think you're grown now, huh? Then go! But whatever the Reid family has given you, you're not taking a single thing with you!"She lifted her chin like she was convinced I was only leaving so I could snatch something valuable. She and Liam flanked me on both sides, following close behind. When we got to my room, both of them froze."Isn't this a storage room? You actually stay here?" Liam blurted out."You all said Summer and Ashley should stay on the s

My parents and Liam didn't even spare me a glance. They rushed upstairs after Ashley, terrified she might actually do something stupid. And just like that, the dark room was quiet again with only Melinda and me inside."Sunny…"Her voice broke, and the pain in her eyes was so real that it felt heavy in the air. "I'm sorry… I'm so sorry… If I hadn't been careless back then and mixed you two up, none of this would've happened.""You're not the one who should be apologizing."She wasn't the only one at fault that day, but she was the only one who had humbled herself and begged the Reid family to let her work here just so she could be near her child. The Reid family, on the other hand, just kept hurting the person they had already wronged.A small part of me felt relieved that I'd lost my memories of these people. If I were still that naive girl waiting desperately for a scrap of affection, I'd just be bringing more pain to myself. To the Reid family, I would always be an outsider
