Chapter 4

作者: Fiery Cow
The photo was of Calvin attending an event overseas. So, it turned out he was actually the heir to the Fulton family, the most powerful family in our city.

In the photo, he wore a luxurious custom three-piece suit and a watch worth millions, and rode in a Rolls-Royce with a full entourage of bodyguards around him.

I thought about how this rich heir, who was totally out of my league, had gone out of his way to dress shabbily and look unkempt when meeting me for cheap street food. I nearly burst out laughing.

Calvin had really gone all in just to test his online girlfriend.

Afraid that Yvonne would somehow track him down and expose the fact that I'd been impersonating her, I racked my brains trying to appease her.

"You're overthinking this," I said. "The first time he treated me to a meal, it was a 15-dollar buffet-style boxed meal. Every time we meet up, we only go for cheap street food.

"He only has one set of clothes that he rotates over and over, and his slippers are falling apart. How could he possibly be the Fulton family's heir?"

Seeing the doubt in Yvonne's eyes as she looked me over, I quickly pulled out my phone and showed her the photos I had taken of us eating at street stalls, along with the bill totals.

She scrolled through my phone for a long time. Then, she dragged her gaze over my clothes—the same ones I'd worn for years—and only then did she reluctantly let go of her suspicions.

"Makes sense. If he really were some rich heir, how could he not spend money on you and still be slumming it at cheap places with you? And someone that high-class would definitely have high standards. No way he'd go for a broke nobody like you."

Before she left, she couldn't resist throwing in a few more nasty jabs at me.

"You were born pathetic, Tessa. Trash like you only deserves to hang around losers. When you're out in public, don't you dare say you're from the Reed family. My parents can't afford the shame," she spat.

Looking at the smug, domineering look on her face, I swallowed my resentment. Despite myself, a tiny thread of anticipation rose in my chest.

If one day, Calvin stood firmly by my side as the Fulton family's rightful heir and made Yvonne eat her words in front of me, how would she react?

I only indulged in that fantasy for a few seconds before I shook my head, forcing myself to stop daydreaming. The fact that Calvin had given me such a good job made me feel like I'd already hit the jackpot. How could I dare hope for a miracle to actually happen to someone like me?

Once I composed myself, I kept my head down and quietly got through another three peaceful days.

That day after work, I'd just stepped out of the company building when a Rolls-Royce suddenly pulled up right in front of me.

The rear window slowly rolled down. Calvin's face—both familiar and strangely distant at the same time—appeared before my eyes.

"Tessa, get in. There's something I need to talk to you about," he said.

All the other employees stopped in their tracks, staring and whispering to each other about my relationship with Calvin.

My mind short-circuited. I couldn't believe Calvin had actually revealed his identity in front of everyone.

Seeing the stunned look on my face as I stood frozen there, Calvin chuckled and opened the door, stepping out of the car. "What are you spacing out for? We've only been apart for a few days, and you've already forgotten me?"

As he walked toward me with that gentle look in his eyes, my heart pounded violently in my chest.

Maybe miracles really did happen.

Just as I hesitated over how to respond to him, a shrill voice suddenly rang out from behind me.

"Mr. Fulton! Tessa has tricked you—she's not the real Cindy who's been chatting with you online. She's an impostor!"

My breath hitched, and I stiffly turned around.

Yvonne came charging over. "I'm Yvonne Reed. I'm Cindy, the one who was really in an online relationship with you!"

When I saw Calvin's expression darken, I felt like I'd been plunged into an ice-cold abyss. All the blood drained from my face.

I was done for.

I'd waited so long for Calvin to come clean to me about who he really was. If he found out that our entire relationship was built on my deception… Forget about latching onto him. I would probably lose the job I depended on just to survive.

I wanted so badly to open my mouth and explain everything to him, but fear made my throat close up, and I couldn't force out a single word.

Contemptuous, mocking stares closed in on me from every direction, making me so nervous that I couldn't even lift my head.

"Look—this is my account. These are our chat logs, and these are the photos I sent you. I have tons of proof that Tessa has been lying to you! You can't let this scammer off the hook!" Yvonne cried.

Faced with Yvonne's meltdown, all I felt was that old, suffocating fear. Years of swallowing every insult and never fighting back had trained me too well. My mind went blank.I could only stand there and watch as she smashed my desk, ripped all my documents to pieces, and turned me into a laughingstock in front of the entire office."You're just a pathetic orphan, Tessa! What makes you think you deserve a life like this? Look at yourself. Do you seriously think you're good enough for Calvin? If I can't have him, you can forget about it, too!" Yvonne shrieked. She came at me again, her eyes blazing as she raised her hand for a slap.Suddenly, a tall, solid figure stepped in front of me. Calvin's hand closed around her wrist like iron, and he shoved her back."You just assaulted and humiliated someone for no reason, barged into my company, and trashed our office. The security cameras caught every second of it," he said icily. "If I don't see you locked up for at least a few years,

I smacked my forehead.Right.For someone with a ten-figure bank balance, looking into a person was child's play. I'd been so stupid not to have realized that. I should've figured it out the moment I joined the company. Calvin had already dug up every last detail about me then.Calvin continued, "That was when I realized that the Cindy I knew online had been lying to me all along, but the Tessa I met in real life was completely, undeniably real. I never expected that my impulse to pretend to be broke would actually give me the chance to meet you."He finally told me that before he met "Cindy" in person, he'd already prepared himself for the possibility that she was just a gold digger. The whole poor act had mainly been a test to see whether she would drop the act and show her true colors, or if she really was a pitiful, kind, and naive woman. If it had been the latter, he would've been willing to use his resources to help her."But ultimately, it was Yvonne's material and vain at

I knew Calvin wouldn't take me back to that budget buffet place. I just didn't expect him to go straight to a fine-dining place where the average per-person cost was several thousand dollars. As I sat there in that high-end restaurant, I had no idea what to do with myself or even where to put my hands. Thankfully, the server was very considerate. She patiently explained which utensils to use for which course. To honor the price tag, I listened carefully to the introduction of every single dish. When it came time to eat, I polished each course off before moving on to the next. I refused to waste a bite.Seeing that I was still the same glutton as before made Calvin smile in that familiar way I knew. He said, "Seeing you eat so happily really puts me at ease. So, what do you think tastes better—fine dining or the 15-dollar boxed meals?""The boxed meals, of course," I answered without even thinking. "The portions are huge, and I love all the dishes. The food here is delicious, but th

Before Yvonne could answer, Calvin rolled the car window up and told the driver to go. No matter how desperately she cried and begged outside, the Rolls-Royce drove off without a shred of mercy. It was my first time in a car as luxurious as this, and my real identity had just been exposed. I was so nervous that I shrank into myself.I could feel Calvin watching me with obvious interest. With my head ducked low, I apologized again, very seriously."I was wrong for lying to you. I actually had plenty of chances to tell you the truth, but I didn't. That just makes things worse."I'd never really had any friends growing up; it was rare to meet someone I clicked with this much. I was terrified of losing you as my only friend and meal buddy, so I just kept making the same mistake over and over."Being able to see the bank balance floating over people's heads was my secret. I'd never told anyone.Sure, initially, I did approach Calvin because of his ten-figure balance. But as we spent m

Calvin noticed me glance at him. He met my eyes with a strange, unreadable look. He said, "Tessa, you've lied to me once. How can I be sure that you're not lying now?"His tone was still icy, but from my understanding of him, I could tell his expression had softened a little. After confessing my lie, I felt a lot lighter inside. Relying on the rapport we had built over the past few days, I lowered my voice and complained, sounding a little aggrieved, "Well, you… you lied to me, too."You told me you were scraping by delivering takeout every day and that you had to rotate the same clothes over and over. But it turns out you were just putting on an act and fooling me from the start."Seeing how I looked both annoyed and helpless, Calvin rubbed his nose, suddenly looking a bit embarrassed. His attitude was no longer so domineering."I was going to explain everything to you properly," he said. "I just didn't expect Yvonne to show up out of nowhere and mess up my plans."The warmth in

Egged on by Yvonne's hysterical accusations, Calvin took her phone and glanced at it. The next second, his brows knit together, and his expression darkened. He fixed his gaze on me and asked icily, "Tessa, do you have anything to say?"His voice sliced through the dead silence, the air around him heavy and oppressive. He gave the evidence in his hand a little wave; his expression was frostier than I'd ever seen it.I'd gotten so used to the Calvin who always joked around with me, the one who never took anything seriously, that seeing him like this made my tongue go stiff and my words trip all over themselves."I… I'm sorry. I didn't mean to pretend to be Yvonne. Could you please let me explain?"I wanted to tell Calvin everything from beginning to end. More than that, I wanted to hurry and explain that, aside from lying about my identity, every single thing I had ever said to him had been true. But Yvonne didn't give me the chance. Before I could say anything else, she cut in, he
