Chapter 4

Author: Nameless
However, Wendy's use of "glorified maid" shattered everyone's assumptions about me.

Just when things were getting awkward, Alfie appeared. He took my hand, the matching diamond band on his ring finger sparkling brightly.

That one gesture was enough to make it clear whose side he was on.

Wendy's face went white. Just when everyone was about to start digging into my background, the notoriously tight-lipped Alfie finally spoke.

"She is… my… fiancee."

Not the most perfect delivery, but there was no hesitation in his tone.

The guests immediately turned their disdain toward Wendy.

"I know her. She's a mid-level manager at some company. Dated several guys, and none of them worked out. If you ask me, she's the one trying to become Mr. Lawson's maid."

"Seriously. His fiancee has been with him for ten years. How does she have the nerve to call her a maid? Talk about not knowing her place."

Wendy tried to argue, but her face had already gone red.

In the end, Alfie took me home. To reward him, I cooked an entire tableful of dishes myself.

He didn't touch his food. He kept staring at his phone. When I urged him to eat, he showed me some urgent documents from the company and then left.

Little did he know, he had left his laptop on. Right there on the screen was his latest notification.

"You and Wendy Brown are now friends."

He had just accepted Wendy's friend request.

That day, Alfie hadn't come home at all.

Normally, I wouldn't have cared, but today was our engagement anniversary. So, I called him. He didn't answer.

Just as the clock was about to strike midnight, a friend sent me a video.

In it, Wendy was clearly drunk, crying and screaming as she tried to throw herself into the raging river. Alfie was desperately holding her back.

Through the wind and rain, he never stopped talking. It was the first time in ten years that I had heard him speak so fluently.

I turned the volume all the way up and caught fragments of what he was saying.

"What do you mean I abandoned you? You were the one who dumped me back then! Wendy, please don't jump! If you need money, I'll give it to you. If you need connections, I'll give you connections!

"You don't have to throw your life away like this!"

Not a single pause, not a single stammer. He was back to his old debater self.

My future mother-in-law called me. "Pheeb, the arrangements for the business in Vespera are pretty much settled. You should come back home and start working here."

I didn't refuse. Her meaning couldn't be any more obvious.

She had agreed to let Alfie get engaged to me because he could only speak when I was around. Now that there was a woman who had managed to fully cure him, I was no longer useful.

The high-paying job back home was her way of compensating me.

My friend sent me the location of a hotel. She wanted me to get there immediately and stop them.

I thought about it for a moment, then grabbed the half-box of condoms we had left.

When I knocked on the hotel room door, Alfie hadn't even had time to change. His shirt was soaked through from the rain, clinging to his body and outlining his lean frame.

Water was still dripping from the ends of his hair. Meanwhile, Wendy was already sitting on the couch in a dry silk nightgown, her hair half-dried. The towel she had used was clenched in his hand.

"What are you doing here?" Alfie asked me, his voice smooth.

I handed him the condoms. "They don't sell these at the hotel. I happened to be passing by."

Wendy turned her head toward me, her expression dimming instantly. "What, you think I'm like you, selling my body the moment I see money?"

As much as he hadn't let go, Alfie swore to use the most hurtful methods possible to win me back, to prove what he felt. Just why hadn't he seen me for who I was sooner? If he had, then on the day I called off our engagement, he would've married me without a second thought. He would've brought me home and never let me leave again.Alfie stopped himself.No. He shouldn't have gotten involved with Wendy in the first place, not while I was still his fiancee.Alas, it was all too late.…The truth was, I got the insider information about the land in Easthound from my fiance—or ex-fiance—Cameron Grant. We broke off our engagement because of Alfie. I tried to compensate the Grants with a large sum of money afterward, but they returned it.I figured they were angry. After all, I was in the wrong. After my company went public, I spent a fortune at an auction house to buy an original work by a renowned painter as an apology. The Grant couple didn't really blame me. The marriage had be

My words echoed in Alfie's mind, "Your desire to conquer is stronger than whatever feelings we had for each other."His grip on the steering wheel tightened. He had never truly considered that possibility before. Was he unable to let go of me because he still loved me, or was it because he couldn't stand losing? Had his need to win become so deeply ingrained that he couldn't tell it apart from love?Alfie pulled into the driveway and stopped outside the house. Then, he slumped over the steering wheel, his breathing unsteady.Maybe he really did love me. At the same time, he had assumed money was the only thing tying us together. As long as he had money to give me, I would always stay by his side. When he had gotten engaged to Wendy, had he truly let me go?No. How could he have?In Alfie's eyes, I had always been shameless and insignificant—so shameless that even if he got married, as long as he gave me enough money, I would throw myself at him and happily become his mistress.

I smiled. What did Alfie's selective mutism have to do with "not thinking things through"? I surmised Mrs. Lawson was worried I would retaliate against him for dumping me."Mrs. Lawson, I'm here to pay you back."She froze.Alfie, sitting nearby, looked up too. I met his eyes. "I'm here to return everything Mr. Lawson gave me during our relationship."I pulled out a ledger. Starting a decade ago, I had recorded every gift Alfie had given me after kissing me, along with what each item would be worth today after accounting for inflation. The ledger had started as a love diary written by a young woman. But as the years went by, the entries became more clinical. There were no longer deions of how excited or happy I had been when I received something. Instead, there were only cold, precise records of the date, item, quantity, market value, and inflation-adjusted value. The final entry was the piece of land he had approved for me. The money Mrs. Lawson had paid me didn't count. Th

In the end, Alfie realized I truly was just a shallow, money-hungry woman. I would listen to him so long as he gave me money. The thought that the other man stood no chance against him made him lose all interest. That was enough for him to let it go. So, how could he ever want to marry someone like me?Wendy, on the other hand, was much smarter. Whenever she wanted money, she would hold her head high and refuse it with all the stubbornness she could muster.Either way, Alfie would always give his partner money. All she had to do was live in the huge villa he had given her and stubbornly insist that she wasn't some kept woman.Naturally, he would think she had somehow managed to remain pure and untouched by all that wealth. All the jewelry and luxury gifts were things he had forced on her. They had nothing to do with her.Even parachuting Wendy into a management position at my company had been Alfie's way of spoiling his partner. It definitely wasn't something she had ever asked fo

Since then, I kept my mouth shut at work.My boss was leaving, and I wanted a shot at her position. I didn't want Alfie to say one word and have the job handed to me again, so I stayed up for three nights preparing my promotion proposal. Then, out of nowhere, a message came down from headquarters.A new female executive had been transferred from the Vesperian branch and parachuted into our department as our new boss. That person was none other than Wendy.I had been naive. There was a difference between the way Alfie truly valued someone and the little favors he tossed to others. I was the latter, while Wendy was the former. He could get me drinks, plush toys, and concert tickets, but when it came to handing me real power, I suddenly became undeserving.I was just his companion-turned-glorified-maid, after all. How could I ever really be given the title of the boss?I tore up my proposal and handed in my resignation. It wasn't just because I didn't want to work under Wendy. It

Alfie gripped the box of condoms. "You think this is funny?"I scratched my head. "What?""There's a limit to how jealous you can get," he said fluently. "I only brought her here because I needed her help. Don't let your dirty mind turn everything dirty!"He threw both the box of condoms and me out together. With a bang, the door slammed shut in my face, sending a gust of wind through my hair. The young man I had spent ten years trying to get to speak could now talk without a single stammer.Good for him. I supposed the person who tied the knot had to be the one to untie it.Mrs. Lawson kept sending me message after message, urging me to go back to our home country. I packed up every penny I had made over the past ten years and left. The only thing I left behind was the engagement ring, sitting alone on top of the Black card Alfie had given me.I was only taking what I had earned through my own work. As for gifts from a man, I wasn't taking those with me.…I had made quite a
