Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
My uncle, Sam Lorde, worked in a factory in Canalia. He returned to the country every year and would always bring snacks and comic books with him.

When he first started teaching me Canalian, he was only doing it to keep me entertained. Later, he realized that I was learning the language faster than he was.

I was able to watch a Canalian cartoon series, "Pirates Adventures", without any subtitles when I was in fifth grade.

When I was in seventh grade, I passed the basic Canalian proficiency test.

I passed the expert Canalian proficiency test when I was in tenth grade, which was the highest qualification I could receive.

On the other hand, Englorian had been a nightmare for me since middle school. I couldn't remember the vocabulary or figure out the grammar. I was also terrible at the listening aspects of the subject.

My scores were always abysmal whenever I took Englorian tests.

That was why, in the second half of my sophomore year, I secretly switched my foreign language from Englorian to Canalian.

My homeroom teacher didn't know about what I did, and neither did my classmates. Even Mom and Dad only found out later because I thought that there was no need for me to announce the change since I didn't plan to take the Englorian test to get into university.

On the day of the college entrance exams, I was sent to a different examination hall to take the Canalian test.

It turned out that I was the only one who was taking the test. I was the only student in the hall with two examiners watching me scribble away on my test paper.

The test consisted of four parts: listening, grammar, reading, and writing.

The questions weren't difficult.

The expert Canalian proficiency test was on the same level as the classes taught during a Canalian major's sophomore year in university. The college entrance exams' Canalian test was much easier in comparison.

I felt incredibly calm when I walked out of the examination hall.

I had scored 390 points for the Canalian test.

As for my other subjects, I scored 372 points in Reading and Writing, 380 in Mathematics, and 358 in Science, bringing my total college entrance exam score to 1,500 points.

I had calculated my estimated scores beforehand. If I forced myself to take Englorian for my foreign language test, I would have scored at most 290 points.

My total score would drop to around 1,400 points, which would only allow me to apply to second-rate universities.

By switching to Canalian for my foreign language test, I would obtain the qualifications to apply to a prestigious institution like Gladewell University instead of just second-rate universities.

Heather was only able to accuse me of cheating during the Englorian test because there was a gap in our knowledge.

However, this gap had inadvertently pushed me into the pits of hell.

Heather didn't know it was possible to take Canalian for the college entrance exams' foreign language test.

Louis didn't either. Neither did my homeroom teacher, Benjamin Weller.

They were accusing me of cheating under the assumption that I took the Englorian test when, in reality, I hadn't even touched it.

I unlocked my phone.

Heather's suggestion to force me to take an Englorian test on the spot had been shared over 50 thousand times. The commenters were urging me to respond.

"Where's Sarah? Did she go into hiding?"

"She must be feeling guilty. She wouldn't dare show her face if she actually cheated during the test."

"The Department of Education should just void her results. They can't let her get away with this."

I didn't explain myself. Instead, I navigated to my own social media account and sent a private message to the Department of Education's official account.

"This is Sarah Lorde. I would like to request a public conference. I also want it to be livestreamed on all platforms. I'll present all the evidence in my possession."

The Department of Education responded ten minutes later.

"We will grant your request. The conference will take place at 9:00 am tomorrow in a meeting room in your local Department of Education's office."

I took a screenshot of the conversation and posted it on my social media account with the caption, "See you tomorrow."

The comments section exploded.

"Oh, my God. She's actually going to show her face?"

"Is she going to apologize?"

"You should take the Englorian test on the spot if you have the guts, Sarah!"

"I'll livestream myself eating my keyboard if she actually does that."

I switched my phone off and closed my eyes.

I was determined to reveal the truth to everyone tomorrow. I wanted them to know that they hurled three days' worth of false accusations at me because they didn't have all the information.

The document was downloaded over 100 thousand times within the first hour. The comments section was filled with grateful messages."You're the coolest woman I've ever known, Sarah.""I've already started studying the alphabet. Thank you for giving me another option.""Our school doesn't offer any Canalian classes, so I'm just going to learn it myself.""I'm going to share this with every student who's struggling with Englorian. This will save their lives."My nose stung a little as I scrolled through the comments.Truth be told, I had never thought about being a hero. I was just someone who wanted to get into a good university despite my bad Englorian.I had simply given myself another option by choosing Canalian. Now that I had paved the way, it was up to the other person whether they wanted to or were willing to walk down this path. At the very least, they wouldn't end up like me. They wouldn't be reported and harassed by a person who didn't know the rules for three days.…

The dust didn't settle after the end of the conference. The netizens' responses were a lot more intense than expected.I gained over 200,000 followers overnight. My inbox was bombarded with messages. Most of them were apologies. A handful of them asked me how to register to take Canalian in the college entrance exams. A few of them were interview invitations from media outlets.I didn't reply to these messages. But one message caught my eye.I didn't know the sender. Their profile photo was of a female cartoon character, and their username was "IStillWantToRunAwayFromEnglorianToday"."Hi, Sarah. I'm in tenth grade, and I've only been scoring around 125 points on my Englorian tests. I only found out that I can take Canalian for my college entrance exams' foreign language test after watching your video. "How did you pick up the language? Can you teach me? I don't want my life to be ruined because of Englorian."I hesitated for a long time before I replied, "Study the alphabet u

Oliver rapped his knuckles on the table and asked, "Ms. Cliffton, were you aware that Canalian is another option for the college entrance exams' foreign language test before you reported Ms. Lorde?"Heather hung her head. Her tears dripped onto the table as she answered, "I didn't know…""Did you look into Ms. Lorde's exam admission sheet or exam information?""I didn't…""The evidence of cheating that you provided was only based on Ms. Lorde's Englorian tests' results and Mr. Henderson's testimony, is that correct?""Yes…"Oliver breathed out a long sigh and closed the folder before him."I have a basic understanding of the situation now."He looked at me before asking, "Do you have anything to add, Ms. Lorde?"I mulled over my thoughts before I answered, "I do."I stood and looked at Louis, saying, "You claimed that I always peeked at your answers during our Englorian tests, Louis.""T-That's right," Louis said, not daring to meet my eyes."Well, are you aware that you've

The color drained from Heather's face. Her lips trembled as tears spilled down her face."No… It's not like that. I truly had no idea. I just…"She couldn't even finish her sentence. Her shoulders quivered violently as she covered her face with her hands. The sudden development of events polarized the commenters. "I feel so sorry for Heather. She really didn't know.""Not knowing doesn't give her the right to just report someone based on her own whims. What if I didn't know that you can take braille for your college entrance exams? Does that give me the right to report a blind student for cheating?""Sarah's being a little too cruel. Heather's crying so much.""Cruel? You would be singing a different tune if your parents were the ones who were being ruthlessly harassed."Oliver rapped his knuckles on the table again. "Please keep your emotions in check, Ms. Cliffton."Heather's eyes were extremely swollen when she looked up at me. Her voice was thick with tears when she blubb

Dead silence descended upon the meeting room. The endless comments also stopped for a split second before they flooded the live stream like a broken dam.Someone sent an entire row of question marks."What is she talking about?""She didn't take the Englorian test? Don't you have to take it for the college entrance exams?""Has she lost her mind?"Oliver frowned and said, "Explain yourself, Ms. Lorde."I pulled out my exam admission sheet from my pocket and placed it on the table. "This is my exam admission sheet. Please take a look at the foreign languages section."Oliver picked up the sheet. His frown deepened when he glanced at it. He then handed the sheet to the other members of the investigative team. The admissions office director's eyes widened after he leaned closer to get a look. The commenters on the live stream started cheering for Heather."Well said! Your words moved me to tears.""She could have just ignored what was happening and enrolled in a top university. But she chose to make a stand for the sake of everyone else.""She's the true embodiment of righteousness.""Heather's the bravest student of this year's college entrance exams."Oliver's face was devoid of emotion when he rapped his knuckles against the table."We've looked through the evidence that you provided, Ms. Cliffton. Now, we need an eyewitness of this case to give us a statement," he said, turning to look at Louis. "Are you willing to testify, Mr. Henderson?"Louis' chair scraped backward when he stood up, causing an ear-piercing sound to cut through the air. He swallowed before replying, "Yes. I'm willing to testify.""Were you telling the truth when you accused Ms. Lorde of peeking at your answers?"Louis twisted his fingers together under the table, his knuckles turning white.
