Chapter 1

My name was all over the trending topics chart when the college entrance exam results were released.

Several tags that were related to me appeared on the chart such as, "#TopScholarReportedForCheating", "#SarahLordeScored145PointsForEnglorian", and "#FairOrCheat".

There was a video pinned to the top of the trending tags.

A student from Franille High School, Heather Cliffton, had uploaded the video. She was the second-highest scoring scholar in the entire province. She was wearing her uniform in the video. Her eyes were swollen and bloodshot, and her voice trembled when she spoke.

"My name is Heather Cliffton. I got the second-highest score for the college entrance exams in the province this year. I didn't want to talk about this at first, but I just couldn't hold myself back anymore.

"To my knowledge, the current provincial top scholar, Sarah Lorde, has never scored more than 145 points on her Englorian tests. She has only scored between 135 and 145 points during her entire time in high school.

"However, her college entrance exam score is two points higher than mine. I don't believe her. A student who only scores an average of 135 points on her Englorian tests couldn't possibly qualify for a top university like Gladewell University.

"I conducted my own investigation and discovered that she scored 390 points for her Englorian test. Would you believe her if she told you that her score suddenly jumped from 145 points to 390 points?

"I'm not jealous of her. I simply think that the students who stay up till 2:00 am to study don't deserve to lose to a cheater. Thus, here I am, giving up the safety of anonymity to report Sarah Lorde for cheating on the Englorian section of the college entrance exams."

Heather had attached several photos as evidence in the comments section of the video.

The photos included my Englorian test scores from high school, which ranged between 135 and 145 points.

There was also an audio recording.

When I tapped play, I heard my seatmate, Louis Henderson's voice.

"I'm Sarah Lorde's seatmate. I can testify that Sarah always peeked at my answers during our Englorian tests. My Englorian isn't very good, but she's willing to copy my answers, which proves that she doesn't know a thing about the subject."

Louis sounded incredibly timid in the recording. In fact, he sounded rather embarrassed, as though he had forced himself to record the statement anyway.

Chaos erupted in the comments section.

"Oh, my God. Her Englorian test score shot up from 145 to 390 points? That's impossible. She couldn't possibly get such a high score even if the answers were printed on her test papers."

"I can't believe that someone like her is the provincial top scholar. Why did I spend all that time practicing mock questions till 1:00 am then?"

"Why haven't the people in charge of the college entrance exams done anything to correct this injustice? Did they feed their conscience to the wolves?"

"Which school is Sarah from? We should teach her a lesson!"

My name, school, and address were dug up and leaked in less than two hours.

Dad's phone was flooded with messages.

"Your entire family deserves to die horrible deaths because your daughter cheated."

"Get out of our town!"

"My suggestion is for your entire family to get off yourselves."

Mom's blood pressure shot up to 180 when she saw the third message, and she toppled backward.

My fingertips felt icy when I held her.

Dad swallowed two antihypertensive pills, but his hands continued to shake. He switched his phone off, but the harassers kept calling our landline instead.

I didn't cry.

I saw a new announcement when I navigated to the Department of Education's website.

"The Department of Education has officially opened a case to investigate the issue of Ms. Sarah Lorde's contested college entrance exam results. Her eligibility to apply to Gladewell University has also been temporarily revoked. A follow-up announcement will be made after investigations have concluded."

Revoked.

I felt like I had been doused with a bucket of freezing water when I read that word. I took a deep breath, preparing to record my own video to explain the situation.

Just then, Heather uploaded a new post on her social media account.

"Some people are saying that Sarah might have gotten the answers beforehand instead of cheating during the exam. Here's my suggestion—why don't we get her to take an Englorian test on the spot? Would she dare accept the challenge? I'll grovel at her feet for forgiveness if she passes."

She had also attached a photo of a college entrance exam–level Englorian test to her message.

The other commenters enthusiastically agreed with Heather's idea.

"That's a great idea! We should get her to take the test on the spot! Let's see if she can actually walk the walk."

"Is Sarah brave enough to accept Heather's challenge? I bet she won't do it."

"You're basically asking her to sign her own death sentence by having her take an Englorian test when her average score is only around 135 points."

I stared at Heather's post for a long time before I burst into laughter.

I wasn't laughing out of bitterness. On the contrary, I just thought that the entire situation was utterly ridiculous.

A person who only scored 135 points on their regular Englorian tests would certainly fail the college entrance exams.

However, the truth was that I didn't take any Englorian tests for my college entrance exams.

Thank you for giving me another option.""Our school doesn't offer any Canalian classes, so I'm just going to learn it myself.""I'm going to share this with every student who's struggling with Englorian. This will save their lives."My nose stung a little as I scrolled through the comments.Truth be told, I had never thought about being a hero. I was just someone who wanted to get into a good university despite my bad Englorian.I had simply given myself another option by choosing Canalian. Now that I had paved the way, it was up to the other person whether they wanted to or were willing to walk down this path. At the very least, they wouldn't end up like me. They wouldn't be reported and harassed by a person who didn't know the rules for three days.…

The dust didn't settle after the end of the conference. The netizens' responses were a lot more intense than expected.I gained over 200,000 followers overnight. My inbox was bombarded with messages. Most of them were apologies. A handful of them asked me how to register to take Canalian in the college entrance exams. A few of them were interview invitations from media outlets.I didn't reply to these messages. But one message caught my eye.I didn't know the sender. Their profile photo was of a female cartoon character, and their username was "IStillWantToRunAwayFromEnglorianToday"."Hi, Sarah. I'm in tenth grade, and I've only been scoring around 125 points on my Englorian tests. I only found out that I can take Canalian for my college entrance exams' foreign language test after watching your video. "How did you pick up the language? Can you teach me? I don't want my life to be ruined because of Englorian."I hesitated for a long time before I replied, "Study the alphabet u

Oliver rapped his knuckles on the table and asked, "Ms. Cliffton, were you aware that Canalian is another option for the college entrance exams' foreign language test before you reported Ms. Lorde?"Heather hung her head. Her tears dripped onto the table as she answered, "I didn't know…""Did you look into Ms. Lorde's exam admission sheet or exam information?""I didn't…""The evidence of cheating that you provided was only based on Ms. Lorde's Englorian tests' results and Mr. Henderson's testimony, is that correct?""Yes…"Oliver breathed out a long sigh and closed the folder before him."I have a basic understanding of the situation now."He looked at me before asking, "Do you have anything to add, Ms. Lorde?"I mulled over my thoughts before I answered, "I do."I stood and looked at Louis, saying, "You claimed that I always peeked at your answers during our Englorian tests, Louis.""T-That's right," Louis said, not daring to meet my eyes."Well, are you aware that you've

The color drained from Heather's face. Her lips trembled as tears spilled down her face."No… It's not like that. I truly had no idea. I just…"She couldn't even finish her sentence. Her shoulders quivered violently as she covered her face with her hands. The sudden development of events polarized the commenters. "I feel so sorry for Heather. She really didn't know.""Not knowing doesn't give her the right to just report someone based on her own whims. What if I didn't know that you can take braille for your college entrance exams? Does that give me the right to report a blind student for cheating?""Sarah's being a little too cruel. Heather's crying so much.""Cruel? You would be singing a different tune if your parents were the ones who were being ruthlessly harassed."Oliver rapped his knuckles on the table again. "Please keep your emotions in check, Ms. Cliffton."Heather's eyes were extremely swollen when she looked up at me. Her voice was thick with tears when she blubb

Dead silence descended upon the meeting room. The endless comments also stopped for a split second before they flooded the live stream like a broken dam.Someone sent an entire row of question marks."What is she talking about?""She didn't take the Englorian test? Don't you have to take it for the college entrance exams?""Has she lost her mind?"Oliver frowned and said, "Explain yourself, Ms. Lorde."I pulled out my exam admission sheet from my pocket and placed it on the table. "This is my exam admission sheet. Please take a look at the foreign languages section."Oliver picked up the sheet. His frown deepened when he glanced at it. He then handed the sheet to the other members of the investigative team. The admissions office director's eyes widened after he leaned closer to get a look. The commenters on the live stream started cheering for Heather."Well said! Your words moved me to tears.""She could have just ignored what was happening and enrolled in a top university. But she chose to make a stand for the sake of everyone else.""She's the true embodiment of righteousness.""Heather's the bravest student of this year's college entrance exams."Oliver's face was devoid of emotion when he rapped his knuckles against the table."We've looked through the evidence that you provided, Ms. Cliffton. Now, we need an eyewitness of this case to give us a statement," he said, turning to look at Louis. "Are you willing to testify, Mr. Henderson?"Louis' chair scraped backward when he stood up, causing an ear-piercing sound to cut through the air. He swallowed before replying, "Yes. I'm willing to testify.""Were you telling the truth when you accused Ms. Lorde of peeking at your answers?"Louis twisted his fingers together under the table, his knuckles turning white.
