Chapter 2

Penulis: Dominant Meow
Just five minutes after Henry arrived at the office, Loretta shared a new post on Instagram and tagged me.

"My dear hubby is really good at cooking. He prepared this dish for me because he noticed I preferred sweet and sour food after getting pregnant. I have also grown tired of takeouts. Aren't you all jealous?"

I looked at the photo. I could tell from the background that it was taken in the private lounge inside Henry's office. On the table were the sweet and sour meatballs I made last night.

We were almost inseparable when we had just gotten married.

Henry had this private lounge built for me. He also bought a daybed and placed it next to the window.

He once promised me with a firm look in his eyes. "Honey, this will be our secret base from now on."

Now, Henry was letting another woman sit on the daybed while enjoying the sweet and sour meatballs I made.

I couldn't stand it anymore. I immediately pressed the like button on Loretta's post.

Then, I left a comment.

"I heard that your husband passed away three years ago. When did you remarry? Why didn't you invite me to your wedding?"

I received a call from Loretta almost instantly. She said in a dejected voice, "Adeline, you misunderstood me. Please let me explain…"

Henry hurriedly took the phone from her. He said slightly disapprovingly, "Retta just wants to try your cooking. Are you getting jealous over such a trivial matter?"

Instead of responding to his question, I asked, "When did the two of you become so close? Also, why is she in your office? I want a proper explanation from you."

Henry fell silent for more than ten seconds. Eventually, he stuttered a reply.

"My former war comrades and I had discussed and decided to have one person help and look after Retta. You know how difficult the situation is for her—a single lady—to live by herself.

"I didn't tell you about it since I was worried you might get the wrong idea. I've hired her to be our company's cleaner. Trust me, Honey. There's nothing going on between her and me."

After hearing those words, I decided to give our ten years of marriage one last chance.

I responded, "Come home by 10:00 pm tonight. There are some matters that we need to talk about."

Henry sounded quite relieved. He spoke in his usual gentle tone. "Honey, I've always known that you're a kind, understanding person. Just wait for me at home. I'll bring you your favorite dessert, cream puffs."

After the call ended, Loretta sent me a message.

"Adeline Miller, do you really believe that there's nothing going on between your husband and me?"

I balled my fists as I tried to suppress the anger rising in me. I was determined to get an answer from Henry tonight.

Surprisingly, Henry, who always got off work late, arrived home even before 8:00 pm. He held a box of cream puffs out toward me. Behind him, Loretta quickly entered the house.

My face darkened.

I was about to snap, yet Henry put his arm around Loretta's shoulders and introduced her to me.

"You two already know each other. Retta made you some cream puffs to express her apology."

Then, he placed my hand on top of Loretta's hand. He added patiently, "Retta is pretty much someone like my younger sister. Honey, you should treat her like she's your sister too. Since we're family, you shouldn't get jealous of her anymore."

Loretta came up to me and linked her arms with mine. She held a cream puff right next to my mouth and smiled sweetly.

"Adeline, I heard that you liked eating cream puffs. My hands are a bit sore after spending the entire afternoon making them. You shouldn't be mad at Henry anymore after eating the cream puffs."

I detected a pungent smell as the cream puff touched my lips. I could feel a burning, painful sensation in that area.

I pushed her hand away forcefully and asked, "What did you put inside the cream puffs?"

Henry didn't notice that I was in pain. His eyes were glued to Loretta.

I knew that expression on his face all too well. He had once looked at me with that loving gaze too. Yet, Henry only had eyes for Loretta now.

Suddenly, Loretta clutched her stomach and crouched down slowly. In just a few seconds, a small pool of blood formed on the floor where she stood.

Loretta was as white as a sheet. Her voice was shaking. "My child… Please save my child…"

Henry lost his composure. He swiftly picked Loretta up in his arms to rush her to the hospital.

I shouted loudly while staring at his receding figure. "Henry Lloyd! I'll file for a divorce if you take one step out of that door right now!"

I could hear Henry's voice coming from a distance. "Honey, I'll come back and explain everything once I get Retta to the hospital."

The tiny bit of hope I had was completely shattered at that point. Henry had lost his final chance.

I called Cole again. "I need you to head over to the company with me tomorrow. I'm planning to gather the evidence to prepare for the divorce lawsuit."

Ever since we talked it out, I no longer felt pressured when facing Karter.Apart from spending time with my parents, Karter would bring me to various places to experience fun, exciting activities whenever he was free.He took me to the desert for a camping trip, where we did some stargazing. Also, Karter would sometimes invite his friends over on the weekend for a barbecue gathering. There was one time when I really got into growing vegetables. Despite the scorching heat, Karter stayed with me under the sun as we turned the soil and removed the weeds.…On Valentine's Day, he invited me to the beach and said he had a surprise for me.There were only the two of us on the quiet, deserted beach.Karter pulled out a diamond ring and got down on one knee. His eyes brimmed with affection and tenderness as he gazed at me."Adeline, during the past three years, I tried to treat you as a regular friend. I had also tried to stay where you wouldn't be able to notice me and just watch ove

Riley was shocked. I smiled faintly. "You did very well as a receptionist. It's a receptionist's duty to treat all visitors equally and make sure they fill in the registration form before entering the office."I walked into the CEO's office and summoned the renovation team. "Tear everything inside this office out and remodel the place."My parents were relieved to see that I was hardly affected by the divorce. They even praised me."As expected of our daughter, we can see our younger selves through your grit and decisiveness."…Soon enough, our company's sales increased considerably under my lead. Our monthly revenue exceeded 100 million dollars, breaking our company's records since its establishment more than ten years ago.Three months ago, I thought that the betrayal and disappointment would crush me the moment I found out Henry was having an affair.Yet, I was extremely grateful for my new life now. I had a career that I was passionate about, and I had loving parents by

Henry and Loretta begged for mercy as the police escorted them away.On the other hand, their friends who had mocked and criticized me earlier were quietly exchanging glances.Thomas stepped forward. He bowed slightly and apologized to me."We're really sorry. My friends and I were tricked by Henry and Loretta. We accused you of being the mistress without checking the facts first."We'd like to offer our apologies for any offense we may have caused. Could you perhaps consider not suing us?"Someone beside him chimed in, "He's right. We were deceived and misled by the marriage certificate Loretta posted on her Instagram account. If we had known that you were the lady from the famous Miller family, we would never dare to offend you in any way."I responded monotonously, "Clearly, all of you treated me with scorn and disdain earlier because you thought I was a nobody."In that case, I'm sorry, but I won't accept any of your apologies. Please contact my attorney and do what you must

Thomas Graham, the man with the buzz cut, picked up the wedding certificate. He cast a glance at Loretta before looking at me.He seemed rather confused. "Did I remember it wrongly? I remember that Loretta also posted their wedding certificate on Instagram about a year ago."Someone from their group chimed in, "I've seen it too. I can search through her Instagram account for that post and show it to you all."A year ago, Loretta had posted two photos of her and Henry's wedding certificate. A caption was included in the post."I'm so happy to be able to spend the rest of my life with the person I love the most."I had a sudden realization. I hadn't expected that Loretta and Henry had actually announced their relationship to others while keeping me in the dark. That explained why everyone thought I was the homewrecker trying to destroy Loretta's marriage when I dropped by the company earlier.Henry's former war comrades were obviously oblivious to the truth as well.Loretta, who

Henry's eyes turned red as he stared at the swollen area of my lips.He said in a choked voice, "Honey, it was my fault yesterday. If Retta hadn't told me about it, I probably wouldn't notice that you got hurt."Retta doesn't have enough experience in making pastries. She mistook some strong alkali for white sugar and made those inedible cream puffs. None of you did anything wrong. It was my fault for failing to care for you."I pushed away the bouquet of roses and said flatly, "Henry, I've had enough. Let's get a divorce."He hugged me tightly and replied in a gentle voice, "You've also asked for a divorce yesterday, but I won't agree to it! I'm proposing to you one more time today. Let's just pretend that none of this has happened, alright?"I squirmed free from his grip. Henry had probably forgotten all about our promise from back then.During our first year of marriage, I said, "If you happen to break your vows to me one day, I'm willing to give you one chance and one chance

I carefully examined the wound on my lips. Thankfully, it wasn't a serious injury since the cream puff had only come into contact with my skin briefly.Loretta had actually added strong alkali inside the cream puffs. Her goal was to scar and disfigure my face.I was set on making her pay for what she did to me.With a face mask on, I brought Cole along to the company. The receptionist informed me that I had to make an appointment and fill in the registration form first before they let me into the CEO's office.I snickered. "You're new here, right? I started this company. Why would I have to do that when entering my own company?"Riley Croft, the receptionist, seemed rather amused. Her mouth lifted in a mocking smile."How come I haven't heard of you from my boss or colleagues, then? Wouldn't it be a fault on my part if I were to just let anyone into our office?"I nodded since she made a fair point.I said monotonously, "Henry Lloyd, your CEO, is my husband. I can go in now, r
