Chapter 3

Author: Hyacinth
Right after the match, Callum did not hide his disgust. He even went to the federal headquarters to argue with the officials. "Human," "useless," "weak." Those were his favorite words.

That changed after the first time I helped them through a heat cycle. The arrogant Guard elites became clingy. The fierce, cold werewolves nuzzled against me. They pressed into my arms and buried their heads in my shoulder. Sometimes they fought over who got to be closer.

A friend told me that once you get close during a heat cycle, werewolves cannot stay away from their mates.

I said to myself, Callum was the younger twin. He had always been praised and spoiled. His sharp tongue was part of who he was. So when he called me names after I refused to go out with him, I told myself it was nothing new.

Even so, I could not sleep, so I stepped out to clear my head. The hallway was dark, but I saw light coming from the study. The door was slightly open.

I walked closer and heard voices inside. Brennan and Callum.

"Brennan, this is the second time you have hit me."

Brennan looked cold. It felt strange to see. He had been so gentle around me lately that I had forgotten werewolves could be cold and sharp.

"If you do not want to stay with her, then stay away from her." Brennan's voice was flat. "If you ever hurt her again, I will hit you every time."

Callum laughed. "Brother, you were the one who signed the appeal with me. Now you are playing the devoted mate?"

He laughed for a while, then relaxed. "I see. The trial period is almost over. You are being nice to her so she will agree to the separation. That is the plan, right? If we had not discussed it, I might have believed you."

The trial period.

My chest tightened. I had almost forgotten. The system was not rigid. Even with a high compatibility score, some pairs did not work out. There was a one-year trial period. If it worked, they registered officially. If not, they could end it.

I gripped my sleeve. So Brennan was only being kind to get me to agree to a separation? He was no different from his brother.

It hurt to breathe. I was still processing when I heard Brennan say a single word.

"No."

Callum froze. "No? You want to spend your life with her? We agreed to find other partners after this. We are pureblood werewolves. We should pair with purebloods. What will the Guard say about you? Have you thought about that?"

"Not about me," Brennan said. "Only you."

He paused, and his expression softened. "Vera is good. She is smart and kind. I was wrong about her before. I missed too much."

Vera. My name. I never thought he would say it like that.

Brennan turned to Callum. "Stay away from her."

Callum's chest rose. "What is wrong with you? I am still matched with her."

"You want out." Brennan looked at him. "If you have made up your mind, stop hovering around her. If you really want to end this, go to the federal government yourself. Stop stringing her along."

Callum was quiet for a moment. "Do you think I have not thought about it? The heat cycles are not the issue. Those are just biology. But if I ask to end the match, what will the officials think? That I am difficult? That I reject the system?"

"And Vera always looks at me like she needs me. I am not that heartless."

"It is fine. I do not expect anything from her. We will figure it out later. If she stays, she stays. I am not ending it."

Brennan's SideI never liked the matching system. Cold numbers deciding who you would spend your life with. Callum felt the same, so we filed an appeal together. It did not matter. There was still the one-year trial period.I told myself I only had to get through it.Then came Vera. A human. She was shy and always sneaking glances at us. Sometimes she was bold, coming up to hand us herbal broth. She did not flinch at our injuries. She cried while wrapping our wounds, her hands shaking, like tears could stop the bleeding. I said nothing. I just watched her lashes. No one could stay cold around her. She was gentle, kind, and braver than she knew.People at the Guard started noticing. "You look better lately." "You are wearing shoulder paddings now." "Your mate brought you things again."I answered casually, but I was thinking about her. To most people, werewolves were warriors who did not feel pain or cold. To her, I needed herbal broth after missions, shoulder paddings for patrols, and

On Thursday, a light rain was falling. The car stopped in front of the Federal Matching Bureau. The gray building was square and quiet. The federal emblem above the entrance was wet and gleaming.Brennan got out first. He opened an umbrella and came around to my side. I noticed Callum taking a few steps toward us, holding his own umbrella. He stopped when he saw me standing beside Brennan. That night, when I told him about ending the match, his first reaction was to refuse. His eyes went red. He stared at me like he was trying to look fierce, but he looked like he was about to cry. He kept saying my name. He reached for my wrist, but I pulled away. He froze. Brennan took him to another room. I did not know what they said, but Callum stayed in his room after that.On Thursday, he came out. He agreed. The lobby was bright, with white ceiling lights and clean floors. The staff wore dark gray federal uniforms. The process was simple. They pulled the file, verified identities, and printed t

That night, Callum's door was not fully closed. The room was dark. Moonlight came through the window at an angle. The cuts on his hands were still untreated. The person who usually cared so much about his appearance now looked lost and alone.I hesitated, then left medicine and bandages outside his door. I did not know why. Maybe because he had saved me before. Maybe I was just too soft.I stood around the corner and waited. After a while, I heard rustling. I looked again. The medicine and bandages were gone. That night, I dreamed about something that happened a long time ago.The Guard had received reports about rogues near the border targeting humans who traveled alone. I did not know about it at the time. I took a shortcut home. When I realized something was wrong, I was already surrounded. I ran for the main road, but they cut me off. Just as I was about to scream, a gray shape moved through the dark. Callum. He grabbed the nearest rogue by the neck and threw him aside. The other

At dinner, I noticed something was off about Brennan. I looked closer. The shoulder padding on his jacket had a deep gash across it. The edges were clean, like it had been cut by a blade.Callum laughed. "Look at that. It took one mission for that thing to fall apart."I ignored him. If the padding was cut by a blade, what about the person wearing it?I set down my bowl and reached for Brennan's arm to check his shoulder. He caught my wrist and shook his head."I am fine. I deflected a hit during a patrol. The padding took the blow."Callum's voice came from the side, slow and deliberate. "The padding took a hit and fell apart. Quality work."He paused. "But I guess you are lucky. At least someone made you something. No one is making anything for me."He was not looking at me, but I knew he was waiting for a reaction.Brennan was quiet for a moment. He apologized, his voice low. I shook my head."It did its job. It protected you. I will make you a few extras. Stronger ones."I looked d

After Brennan left for the Guard, Callum lingered at the table, picking at his food. I found it strange. He was usually the one who rushed out the door. But I did not ask. I was about to head back to my room when a voice came from behind me, awkward and pretending to be casual."Hey. Where is mine? Just give it to me."He asked like he had every right. Over the past year, I had prepared something for every occasion. Wrist guards. Herbal pouches. Tool kits for weapon maintenance. Everything. Until I found an arm guard I had sewn myself at the bottom of the trash can. I recognized my own stitching. It was crumpled into a ball, sitting right on top, never even unwrapped. After that, I stopped giving gifts. There was no point in giving to someone who would throw it away."No," I said.Callum's expression shifted. He stood up, and the fake indifference in his voice was gone. "Why not? My brother gets one. Why am I not good enough for one?"He paused, catching himself. He sat back down. "Not

I slipped back to my room and lay staring at the ceiling.Callum had always planned to end the match. He did not like me. He did not like that I was human. He thought I was weak. He always had to be better than everyone else. Being tied to me was a stain on his pride. He would not end it himself. If he did, he would be seen as someone who abandoned a human partner. The Guard would question his loyalty to the system. It could even affect his career. He wanted Brennan to convince me to end it. But Brennan had changed his mind. He wanted to stay with me.Now Callum was stuck. He had to make it work, even if he did not want to. Like he said, he could get used to anything over time. He could tolerate me.But I did not want to be tolerated. When I was young, the clothes that came to the care center were always the wrong size. The colors were odd. The staff said, "You will grow into them." The food was too salty. They said, "You will get used to it." I wore clothes that did not fit and ate fo
