Chapter 5

작가: Redleaves
Lillian fired her last shot. The bullet went somewhere only God knew.

She pouted and stamped her foot. Her thoughts plainly visible on her face.

Someone brought our targets back.

Mine was clean. Hers had a single perfect bullseye, dead center.

Victor froze and looked at me for a long moment.

Then he looked at Lillian. Something shifted in his face, the dawn of comprehension.

He smiled, pleased with himself, and made a leisurely production of speaking. "Claudia. Being too modest is also a kind of pride."

"Sometime," he made a little shooting gesture at me, his tone light, almost flirtatious, "I could teach you to shoot."

That was when Lillian noticed the bullseye on her own paper.

She tossed her gun aside and clapped her hands to her mouth, shrieking and jumping in place.

She ran over and grinned in my face. "I hit the bullseye, and you didn't hit a thing. Claudia, you lost this one. Completely."

She was shallow and ostentatious, utterly transparent to others.

The people around her were looking at her with open contempt, but she didn't notice.

Or maybe she did, and she didn't care.

In Victor's eyes, every part of her was beautiful and pure. With him standing between her and the world, she'd never had to face anything sharp.

I smiled, mild. "Congratulations. You won this round."

I'd taken a few steps when I heard her cooing voice behind me.

"Victor, I shoot better than her, and I'm smarter than her too. Right?"

I went stiff and stopped walking.

The memory came up out of nowhere.

What I'd been most proud of had never been my aim. It was my mind.

A Donna rarely needed to fire a gun. But she needed to be the sharpest read in the room, every time.

Every time the Family had trouble, I was the one who saw the heart of it. I built the strategy and handed it to Victor.

Every time, he listened. Every time, he won.

After, he'd sweep my bangs aside and press a kiss to my forehead.

"Claudia, you're a whole army by yourself."

The sun was sinking behind the horizon. The wind carried the cool of night.

Victor's voice, light as anything, reached me clearly.

"Lillian, you shoot better than her, and you're smarter, too."

"Claudia can't compare to you."

"You're number one in my heart."

The news that broke was a shock. The old Don was dead, and Victor had stepped up as the new Don.Vitale and I were on our way back for the funeral when a second shock came.Victor had been ambushed and shot.By the Schillers.Lillian Schiller's Schillers. There was no time for the funeral. We went straight to the hospital.Victor was in the ICU with tubes everywhere, and he hadn't woken up.The doctor said the machines were the only reason he was still alive. He probably wouldn't come back.I held Vitale's hand tight and turned to the consigliere. "The Schillers did this?"He nodded. "Lillian gave them the Don's movements. She put it together with her own family. It was a setup."His voice was bitter. "She got out, and she's holed up on Schiller ground now."I made the call right there. "Tell everyone. Pick the safehouses. Get the mattresses ready."The consigliere stared at me in astonishment. That meant rounding up every man we had, finding secure houses, setting up mattresses on the

News kept coming in from New York. The old Don hadn't shown her any mercy. They took the finger, and he ordered her divorced from Victor.Lillian came apart. She decided the old Don was punishing her on purpose.A petty old man who couldn't keep up with the times, taking it out on her.The day he was discharged from the hospital, she smashed the house to pieces in front of him.Victor had let her get away with everything in the past, but he couldn't stomach this.He gave her a beating she'd remember and told her to wait for the divorce papers. After that, Victor lived in nightclubs. He spent money like he hated it. He drank like he had something to drown. When he was drunk enough, he'd start talking."What the hell did I see in Lillian?""She was stupid, sure, but the face was something. Stupid in a woman comes across as sweet. Innocent.""I never thought she could be this stupid. This level of stupid is unbearable!"People listened. Everyone got to know about it.Turned out Victor lik

A few days later, Vitale was ready to leave for Las Vegas, and I was going with him.He had business there, and this time I was going to throw everything I had behind him.The night before we left, the old Don had a small dinner at the estate, just for us.Halfway through, the consigliere came in fast."Don. Victor and Lillian are asking to see you."The Don's smile dropped. He waved a hand, disgusted. "I said no. Apply the rules.""Victor," the consigliere hesitated, "he's insisting."The Don laughed, low and cold. "Fine. Let them in."Victor came in with Lillian behind him. He walked straight to his father and spoke without preamble."Father. Lillian just didn't know the rules. There's no need to cut off her finger."By now the whole Family knew.Lillian had gone behind the Don's back and opened her own conversation with the Colombians about distribution.Openly defying the Don was supposed to mean a bullet.Considering she was Victor's wife, an exception was made to cut off her left

Victor’s gaze hit my wedding ring on my left hand, and he spoke stiffly."Dia. Why aren't you wearing the diamond I sent you?"I smiled. "Too heavy. I don't care for it."His shoulders trembled. He clenched his fists."Dia. Are you...like me?"Something was caught in his throat, and all that came out was silence. He coughed hard, like he was forcing himself over a wall."You were brought back too, weren't you?""You've been doing this to punish me. That's why you went to Vitale."His eyes went flat. "You're still angry because I left the Family to Lillian's son."I didn't answer.A few cold drops hit my face. The sky was opening up.I picked up my pace and ducked under the colonnade.Victor didn't move. He stood there, staring at me.The rain came down harder. He just stood there in it, like he wanted the water to wash something off.If I'd ever hated him, I'd let it go long ago.Lillian's son was as stupid as she was, reckless and arrogant, living in clubs and bottles. The Medici Fami

We'd just gotten back to New York when the consigliere called us in for an emergency. The old Don had convened a Family council. The Colombian cartels wanted a deal. They were offering to put the Medici Family in charge of distribution in New York. The old Don spoke in his low rumble. "Before I decide, I want to hear opinions.""Yes, of course, what's there to think about?"Lillian cut him off mid-sentence. Her eyes were bright with greed."Everyone knows drugs are the most profitable business. Only an idiot wouldn't get a piece."The old Don made a low, displeased sound and turned to me. "And you? What's your view?""I'm against it. High profit means risk we can't control."I shook my head. "The Medici Family has stood for thirty years, relying on political connections for protection.""What we do is gambling. That's something senators can tolerate. Gambling is a vice, not a crime.""But drugs are different." I let my voice harden. "Not one political figure on our payroll will look th

Our wedding night. Vitale watched me change into my nightgown, his eyes soft at the corners. He poured me a glass of warm water and brought it to me."I still feel like I'm dreaming."His voice came out rough."From the first time I saw you in college, I kept asking myself what kind of man would deserve you.""I never thought it'd be me."His look was hot, like the blood that had dropped onto my face three years ago, burning.I couldn't help it. I laughed. He stared at me, frozen. He didn't know what to do with his hands. That night he held me close and we lost in tender intimacy together. After, he took me to the Mediterranean for our honeymoon.Vitale wasn't Victor. He remembered every small thing about me.He'd sit with me on the balcony all afternoon while I read. He'd stay quiet beside me while I painted and never interrupt. The sea was bluer than anything, an enormous sapphire stretched to the horizon. As blue as his eyes.Sometimes I had to laugh.I laughed at the fool I used to
