Chapter 2

Author: Canal
I had a severe stomach ulcer and couldn't tolerate even the slightest amount of spice. Four years ago, I'd accidentally eaten a bite of food containing hot sauce and ended up in the emergency room.

Audrey had stayed by my side all night. After that, she'd even made a habit of checking ingredient labels before buying any sauces to make sure they wouldn't upset my stomach.

Now, she frowned as if she'd only just remembered.

"We've sent the order."

She poured me a glass of ice water and pushed it toward me. "Besides, the spicy seafood platter is this restaurant's specialty. A non-spicy one would be bland. Just rinse your food in the water before eating. Having it once in a while won't hurt."

Nathan looked stricken with guilt, his fork frozen in midair.

"I completely forgot that Vincent can't eat spicy food. Audrey, how could you forget to remind me, too?"

He glanced at the platter before suggesting, "Shouldn't we change it to a non-spicy one? Otherwise, Vincent won't be able to eat anything."

Audrey sighed. "What's the point of changing it now? The food has already arrived."

She scooped up some seafood and placed it on Nathan's plate.

"He managed to sit on an economy-class train for 20 hours to get here. He's not that fragile. Just eat what's been ordered."

I lowered my eyes, picked up a piece of leafy green, and dipped it into the ice water.

The hot sauce solidified almost immediately in the cold water, forming a disgusting layer of congealed grease.

When Nathan jabbed his fork into a shrimp, hot, oily sauce splashed from the platter.

It landed on the back of my hand, burning my skin red almost instantly.

At the same time, Nathan let out a soft hiss. "Ouch, that's hot."

Audrey immediately grabbed his wrist and carefully dabbed at the barely visible red spot on the back of his hand, her voice filled with concern.

"How could you be so careless? Does it hurt?"

Sitting across from them, I watched as a blister slowly rose on the back of my own hand while the steam rising from the platter blurred my vision.

Just then, my phone vibrated once in my pocket, signaling the arrival of a new email.

"Dear Mr. Vincent Pierce, your application for a transfer to our Northbridge office has been approved. Please report to your new position next Monday."

To put an end to our three-year long-distance relationship, I'd spent countless nights working until dawn, pouring everything I had into two nearly flawless proposals just to secure this transfer.

Across from me, Audrey was still focused on Nathan, gently blowing on the back of his hand to soothe the burn.

I stared at the word "approved" on my screen, my fingertips slowly turning cold.

Then, without another thought, I submitted a request to cancel the transfer.

The moment the page refreshed, I heard something inside me shatter.

…

After dinner, we walked out of the seafood restaurant, and Audrey headed down to the underground parking garage to get the car.

"Vincent, would you mind sitting in the back? I get carsick, so I'm much more comfortable in the front."

Audrey turned on the seat heater for him before adding, "He just got off a plane. Let him have this seat."

I climbed into the back, where the aftereffects of my 20-hour train ride were finally catching up with me. My lower back throbbed as if someone were repeatedly crushing it with a blunt object.

Meanwhile, Nathan turned around with an enthusiastic smile.

"Audrey, I don't think this seafood restaurant is as good as the one we went to in Westland last month."

Audrey smiled faintly. "That place in Westland has a Michelin star. How could this one compare? Next time, I'll take you somewhere even better."

The previous month, I'd come down with a severe cold and a fever of 102.2°F. I'd gone to the hospital alone in the middle of the night for an IV drip.

I'd called Audrey and asked if she could come to me, but her voice had been cold over the phone.

"Vincent, I'm busy. Don't make me go back and forth for nothing. Remember to drink plenty of warm water."

Now, Nathan's cheerful laughter filled the car while I pressed a hand against my aching lower back and remained silent.

It turned out she hadn't been too busy to make time for me. She'd simply been saving her free time for someone else.

When an explanation came a month too late, there was no point asking for it anymore.

The car pulled up outside Audrey's apartment building, and Nathan fished a key out of his bag to unlock the door.

I stared at the key, stunned.

Audrey paused while changing her shoes and turned to look at me. "Why are you standing outside? Come in," she said.

"How does he have a key to your apartment?"

Meanwhile, Audrey tried messaging me. "Can we meet tomorrow?" A red exclamation mark appeared beside her message, indicating that it hadn't gone through. She sent another message, only to get the same result. During one of our arguments, I'd once snapped that I refused to block her because I wanted to leave myself a little backdoor in case I ever wanted to crawl back to her. She'd laughed at me for being so hopeless.Over the past few days, she'd always found some excuse to send me another message. Had I received the refund? Was my back still hurting? Had I read her letters? Now, even that tiny opening was gone. Audrey grabbed her car keys and rushed to the area near my office. Through the café window, she spotted Nathan sitting across from me. The moment I stood up, she stormed inside, shoved Nathan aside as he stood in the aisle, and grabbed my arm. "What did he say to you?" Nathan caught himself against the edge of the table and protested, "Audrey, this was his own

As I was leaving work the next evening, Nathan was waiting for me outside the office. He'd lost some weight, and the moment he saw me step out of the building, he moved in front of me, blocking my way."Vincent, we need to talk." "We have nothing to talk about."He glanced at my coworkers as they began filing out of the building, then raised his voice slightly. "You don't want everyone here finding out what really happened between the three of us, do you?" I stopped walking and looked him straight in the eye."You're making it sound like I'm the one who should be ashamed." His expression stiffened for a moment, but he still refused to move aside. I pointed toward the café across the street. "You have 20 minutes. When we're done, don't come to my workplace again."Once we sat down, Nathan pulled a copy of a pregnancy test report from his bag, then slowly folded it along its existing creases. "The baby is gone, and now even Audrey refuses to see me." He let out a bitter

The moment the door closed, Mom turned to me, worry etched across her face. "What on earth happened? Audrey is such a catch. How could you just send her away?" I stared at the bag of asparagus scattered across the table, struggling to find the words."Mom, we broke up. She cheated on me with Nathan. She even got pregnant with his child, but miscarried."Mom's outstretched hand froze in midair. "Nathan? Nathan Cole? The one who used to come over to our house all the time?" I nodded, my throat tightening as I fought to keep my emotions in check. "She even put his name on the deed to the house we bought together. Mom, I don't want to go back to Northbridge anymore." Only after the words left my mouth did I realize that saying them aloud hadn't been nearly as difficult as I'd expected. Mom stood frozen for a good 30 seconds before tears filled her eyes. "She never used to be like this…" She pulled me into her arms, her voice trembling with disbelief. "She never even let

During my first week back in my hometown, I deleted the alarm I'd set for one in the morning, the time Audrey usually finished work. I'd gotten used to splitting my sleep into two stretches, so I wouldn't miss her video calls. Now, at 10:30 pm, Mom would knock on my bedroom door and scold me, "You can finish your work tomorrow. Do you think electricity grows on trees?" But even as she scolded me, she was already standing outside my room with a freshly sun-dried comforter, waiting for me to turn in early.I shut down my computer. For the first time, there was no one I needed to stay up waiting for. After canceling my transfer to Northbridge, I applied for an opening at the branch in my hometown. The position was still in project planning, but there were fewer projects to handle, and the pay was slightly lower. My supervisor asked if I was sure about my decision. "Once this transfer is approved, you'll have to apply all over again if you want to transfer to Northbridge."

Audrey's heart clenched as a wave of inexplicable panic swept over her without warning. Clutching the string tightly, she hurried outside. Nathan called after her, but she didn't stop, merely calling back, "The car's at the side entrance. The driver will take you home." …The apartment was eerily quiet when she returned. "Vincent, I'm back." Only silence greeted her. My suitcase was gone, and the half of the closet she'd cleared out for me stood empty. She opened the bedside drawer, only to find that even the charging cable I'd left behind was gone. Pulling up our chat history, she sent me a voice message. "Didn't you say you'd wait until I got back? Why did you take all your things? How are you supposed to report to the company on Monday? You just transferred to Northbridge, and now you're already missing?" After sending the message, she went through the trash again, but the bag containing the discarded letters had already been replaced. Still crouched beside the

When Audrey returned to Nathan's ER bed, her steps were still a little unsteady. The doctor flipped through the two examination reports in his hands before addressing her. "Ms. Collins, you need plenty of rest after a miscarriage. As for Mr. Cole, he only has a soft tissue injury to his ankle. There's no damage to the bone, so he can go home and rest."Audrey let out a long, weary breath as the tension finally left her shoulders. Just then, her phone screen lit up with a message from me. "Don't rush back to meet me. I'm never coming back, either." She froze for a moment before immediately calling me, but my phone was switched off. Nathan caught sight of the message and tugged at her sleeve. "Vincent is just angry right now. You two made it through three years of a long-distance relationship. Do you really think he'd be willing to break up with you now?" The furrow between Audrey's brows gradually eased. "That's true. He spent more than six months preparing to transfer to N
