The Great Hall, where the council held their meeting, was designed to intimidate, and it did. It dwarfed everyone that entered it. It was a huge space with floor-to-ceiling windows offering a beautiful view of the city Cassie and Aser ruled.

In the center stood a massive, circular table made of solid oak. Around it sat the twelve Alphas of the East Coast Council. They wore their ceremonial robes with grim faces. The tension in the air was unmistakable.

Alpha Dominic sat at the head of the tabl

The back of the armored van was a cage for Aser, yet he didn't stop testing the limit. Aser was strapped to the floor with heavy cargo straps, but he was testing the rip strength with every strength in his body. "Hold him!" Kael grunted, putting his full weight on Aser’s legs. "He's shifting! The bone structure is changing!" Aser let out a sound that tore at Cassie’s heart, a high-pitched whine that morphed into a deep, guttural snarl. His body was burning so hot that steam was rising from his skin in the cool morning air. The black veins were no longer just on his chest, they had reached his face, turning his eyes into dark pools. "Aser, look at me," Cassie pleaded, kneeling just out of reach of his snapping teeth. "It’s Cassie. It’s me." Aser’s head snapped toward her. For a second, there was recognition as his eyes flickered with his original golden flecks. "Run," Aser managed to choke out. The word was mangled, his jaw reshaping itself. "Cassie... run." "I’m not running," Ca

The haze had almost taken over Aser's body before he could discover that the lab they were in wasn't really a lab. It just looked like that at first glance. They were in an altar that Varkov controlled. It was Matthew that took a step back from all the fighting and realized it, but it was already too late to do anything with the information because one of the creatures headed straight for him. Aser ducked under the snapping jaws of one of the abominations. Up close, he realized these weren't wraiths, as he first thought. They were corpses. "They aren't robots!" Aser roared, slashing his knife across the creature’s throat. No blood sprayed—just dust and black matter. "They're thralls! Undead!" Varkov stood on the catwalk above, laughing. He wasn't wearing a lab coat anymore. He had thrown it off to reveal leather robes covered in magical symbols. "Science is just magic explained!" Varkov shouted. "I stitched them together with steel, but I woke them up with the rot! Just like you

Cassie and Matthew had returned to the witch's in disappointment. They had been so close to finding a cure, only for it to be yanked out at the last minute.Aser sat on the edge of the cot, shirtless, as they relayed the news to him. The black veins had reached his jawline. His skin was gray and clammy to the touch. To distract himself from his worsening condition, he sharpened his knife. "You can't go," Cassie said, standing in front of him. She was dressed in the same gear as the one she used for the failed mission, her hair tied back in a tight braid. "You can barely walk without stumbling. If you go feral in the middle of an op, you’ll kill everyone without caring if they're in your team or not.""I’m not staying here to rot," Aser growled, not looking up from the blade. "This is my life on the line, you think I don't have a right to fight for it?" Matthew's voice was gentle but firm as he answered him. "Let Alpha Kael and me handle the extraction. We’ll bring the marrow back to

Their ride back to the city was unusually cold. The private jet was usually a sanctuary of luxury with its cream leather seats and champagne.Tonight though, it was an ambulance for Aser.Aser lay strapped to the medical gurney in the rear of the cabin. His shirt was off, revealing the angry, blackened veins spiderwebbing across his chest and up his neck.He was thrashing around the bed, refusing to stay in one place as the black veins on his body spread. "Restraints!" Matthew shouted, struggling to hold Aser’s good arm down. "He’s convulsing!"Cassie stood over him, tears streaming down her face as she held a syringe of sedative."I can't knock him out!" Cassie cried. "His metabolism burns through it in minutes! If I give him any more, I’ll stop his heart!""If he breaks loose," Matthew grunted and dodged one of his flailing fists, "he’ll tear this plane apart mid-air! Do it, Luna!"Aser roared, but it wasn't a human sound. His eyes were rolled back, showing only the whites, which w

The morgue was quiet and cold. In Drawer 404, the body labeled SUSPECT ZERO lay in a black body bag.The coroner’s report was clipped to the front. The report was as good as anyone's guess. Died from burns and decapitation from the great falls he suffered. His spinal cord was completely crushed. The room was silent until the cooling unit began to hum. Nothing moved on the body, the rot had consumed everything, but deep within the charred cells, all the drugs that had been pumped into him were still active and reacting. Dr. Varkov’s combination of drugs was powerful enough to regenerate a horse.Cane Marcom was as good as dead, but the burnt body was beginning to change and harden. He wasn't waking up, but he wasn't decomposing either, as he should be. His cells were mutating instead of dying. He was becoming a shell of hate. For now, he was dead, but monsters have a habit of haunting the places they died. Two Weeks LaterThe Marcoms were now in the Montana Ranch. The ranch stretched f

Cane lunged first. For a man with a broken leg and a rotting body, he was terrifyingly fast thanks to the many bolts and metals Dr. Varkov had installed in his joints. He could barely feel the pain that should have come from his broken leg, but he was so pumped up on the dru*gs that he didn't care.He was like a robot the way he swung his machete. There was only one intent as he swung at Aser, and it was to kill him.The blade sliced the air where Aser’s neck had been a fraction of a second before Aser's self-preservation kicked in as he ducked and jumped back on his foot. He defended himself with his own knife, aiming for a major artery in Cane's wrist.Aser did make contact, but it was with metal. Cane caught the look of surprise in Aser’s face and laughed maniacally."I had him put titanium there." He banked on his surprise and threw him a metal punch in the chest. He felt like he had being hit with a wrecking ball. Aser flew backward and crashed into the reception desk. He gasped
