Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Lili
When I finally dragged myself home, utterly exhausted, I found the lights still on and Liam in an apron.

“You’re back so late. I made your favorite food,” he said.

I froze. The image of the perfect husband in front of me overlapped with the man lifting the newborn earlier that day.

“Darling, what are you doing just standing here? Are you exhausted? Maybe you should quit your job and stay home to enjoy life a little.”

I turned away and bent down to untie my shoes.

“We don’t even have kids. What would I do at home if I quit my job?”

He came over and hugged me.

“Then, let’s have one.”

I caught a faint milky scent.

As an obstetrician-gynecologist, I was all too familiar with the smell of breast milk.

Pain surged in my chest.

“Liam, have you forgotten that I had my fallopian tubes removed for you?”

He stiffened, then let out an awkward chuckle. “I was just kidding.”

I pushed him away coldly.

If not for what had happened that afternoon, I might have believed him.

Back when we were still in university, neither of us had much life experience.

All I remembered was how captivating he looked beneath the moonlight one night.

“Baby, I’ll take care of you.”

After the heat of the moment passed, the two lines on the pregnancy test left us stunned.

As graduation was just around the corner, I tested the waters and asked, “What if we keep the baby?”

Liam’s expression darkened immediately.

“We don’t even have jobs! How can we raise a child? Besides, I hate kids. Staying child-free sounds a lot better.”

He took my hands and said earnestly, “You’re going to be a doctor. With a child, you won’t have the energy to focus on your career.”

Back then, I was still interning at the hospital, and I was always exhausted.

After agonizing over it, I ultimately gave up the baby, despite how badly I wanted to keep it.

I even went as far as having one of my fallopian tubes removed because he wanted us to stay child-free.

If I could go back in time, I would slap some sense into my younger self.

How foolish I was!

The house was filled with the aroma of food, and the warm yellow light gave the room a comforting, dreamlike feel.

This was exactly what I had always imagined a home to be.

I closed my eyes. When I opened them again, I had made my decision.

“Liam, let’s get a divorce.”

I slipped the plain silver ring off my ring finger and handed it to him.

Liam froze. “You want a divorce?” he asked in disbelief.

His tone softened. “I know I’ve been really busy lately and haven’t paid enough attention to you. I’ve been so busy, but I still make time to cook for you.”

I wanted to ask him whether he truly cared about me, or if this was simply guilt-driven compensation for a mistake.

I turned and went into the bedroom to pack.

Every time I put something into the suitcase, he took it back out.

He tried to kiss me, but I turned away.

He tried to hold me, but I resisted.

The ringing of his phone finally broke the silent struggle between us.

Liam glanced at the caller ID and instinctively looked at me.

“It’s work,” he said.

I scoffed. In the past, he had never hidden work matters from me.

He would say, “You’re my wife. There’s no hiding things between us, even if it’s company secrets.”

A few minutes later, he said casually, “Something came up at the company. I have to leave on a business trip. Stay here. Just take some time to calm down.”

Taking my hand again, he slipped the ring back onto my finger and gently pressed a kiss to the back of my hand.

“This ring means a lot to us. I’ll get you a diamond ring later,” he said tenderly.

I flung the ring straight at the wall.

His expression darkened instantly.

“The more I try to soothe you, the worse you get. I’ve spoiled you too much.”

As the ring hit the floor with a sharp clink, Liam walked out of the house.

My gaze followed the ring as it rolled on the floor, and old memories began to surface.

“Darling, I don’t have any money right now, but I made this ring for you.”

Although his hands were scraped raw, he did not seem to care at all.

His eyes shone as if I were his whole world.

“Darling, once I make it in life, I’ll give you a villa and an unforgettable wedding.”

He did succeed. He became a rising star in the pharmaceutical industry and achieved financial freedom.

He also fulfilled most of his promises, except that there was someone else in his villa.

I was no longer interested in any of it.

I merely nodded and prepared to head upstairs, but Liam blocked my way and refused to let me pass.Micah stepped between us. “Liam, let her go.”“What does this have to do with you?” Liam snapped.“He’s my boyfriend. Of course, it has everything to do with him.”Both of them froze.Micah’s eyes crinkled in amusement.Liam glared at us darkly.“I knew it! You’re together! I gave you that settlement as compensation, but I never thought you were messing around with him.“Were you cheating on me all along? You’re disgusting! Give me my money back, and I’ll drop this.”The sheer absurdity almost made me laugh.“Liam, has being around that trashy woman rotted your brain? Your company going under would only make me applaud. Why would I ever return the money to you?”Liam’s eyes blazed with fury as he charged toward me.Thankfully, Micah had already been on guard and tackled him to the ground. After that, I did not see Liam for a long time.By the time I was preparing to go abroa

Micah called and asked, “Do you want me to hire a PR firm to push back?”“Wait for my update.”I needed to wait for the hospital to issue a fair investigation result before I dealt with Bianca.Due to the widespread public attention and the impact on the hospital’s reputation, the hospital promptly released its investigation reports. The findings confirmed that my treatment was appropriate, and they also published an explanation on the causes of developmental delays in children.Naturally, Bianca was dissatisfied with it and continued her tearful complaints. Her followers believed her and flooded the comment section with insults directed at me.Online, she was seen as a gentle, wealthy, and pitiful housewife, while I was portrayed as an aging, manipulative, and vicious ex-wife.Even Liam’s abandonment of his previous wife was justified in her comment section.Bianca was pushing her luck and reveling in her constructed image far too much.I decided to dismantle it, piece by p

As for the division of assets, I received half of Liam’s company shares, five million dollars in cash, two houses, and three commercial properties. It seemed that this failed ten-year marriage still had its value.“I’ll stick with you from now on, Dr. Quayle,” Micah said half-jokingly.My former classmates all sighed with sympathy when they heard about my divorce. One day, my former university roommate came to see me with a solemn face.“Do you still hold shares in Liam’s company?”I tensed up. “What’s wrong?”“There are rumors that their vaccine has an issue,” she said. “Only a handful of people know about it so far.”After thinking it over, I quietly sold off my shares in batches before the news broke and cashed out.By the time I was done, rumors had already started circulating in the industry.I was glad I had acted quickly. As I looked at my account balance, I felt a wave of relief.Losing love but gaining money was also a blessing in life.A nurse knocked on my door.

Pauline stood nearby and said sarcastically, “At your age, no one will want you after a divorce. My son is different. He has a child and a young wife now. I never approved of your marriage in the first place.”I put away the divorce agreement and fired back immediately.“Back when Liam’s salary wasn’t enough to live on, and I was giving him money for living expenses, why didn’t you object then?”When Liam had just graduated, his salary was lower than mine.Pauline always said, “Once you start working, you should repay your parents.”Meanwhile, my parents thought I had just graduated and would not earn enough to cover my expenses, so they gave me five thousand dollars a month to help out. After Liam handed his salary to Pauline, he could not even afford meals and relied entirely on me.It was the part of his past he avoided mentioning the most.“Didn’t I repay you after I became successful? How could you speak to my mom like that? Without me, could you have lived in a villa on y

Over the next few days, Liam showed up at my hospital room early every morning. No matter how cold I was toward him, he kept acting like the perfect husband. He stopped taking Bianca’s calls as well.“Here, have some apples.”He cut an apple into bite-sized pieces and offered it to me.I used to be the one who did that for him.I looked away and said nothing.“I don’t love her,” he said softly. “It was an accident, and she ended up pregnant.”“An accident? Liam, don’t you hear how ridiculous that sounds?”Liam looked at me with hurt written all over his face.“I’m telling you the truth, Serena. I don’t love her. I just wanted a child, and she happened to come along…“Besides, she… she hasn’t had it easy…”I looked at him coldly.“You feel sorry for her, don’t you?”He froze, clearly not expecting that question.I repeated, “Do you feel sorry for her?”After a moment of hesitation, he nodded.Yet he still claimed he did not love her.Feeling sorry for someone was the d

People around us started whispering among themselves.I pressed a hand to my abdomen as a wave of hatred surged through me.“It’s really over between us now.”Panic flashed across Liam’s face. He opened his mouth as if to explain, but all he could do was clutch my hand helplessly. He kept saying, “I’m sorry.”Nearby, Bianca let out a shrill cry.“Honey, I think my C-section incision has reopened! It hurts so much!”Liam immediately dropped my hand and rushed to her side.“Are you okay?”Without sparing me another glance, he swept Bianca into his arms and ran toward the emergency room.Bianca looked back at me and flashed me a smug smile. She mouthed, “You lose.”The pain in my lower abdomen intensified, and I felt something flowing out of me. Micah dropped to his knees in front of me.“Dr. Quayle, stay with me!”He and Liam moved farther and farther apart, each heading in a different direction in my blurring vision. When I woke up, only Micah was sitting beside my bed
