Chapter 2

Author: Violet Frost
Early the next morning, Lena pouted and convinced Lamont into arranging her discharge papers from the hospital.

Last night, Lamont had carried Lena in his arms and ran frantically. They hitched a ride and ended up here after a long journey.

Nearby was a famous tourist spot. It was packed with people.

Amidst the laughter and cheer, Lamont affectionately ruffled Lena’s hair.

“Since we’re already here, why not stay and enjoy ourselves?”

“Let’s consider it... a celebration of our narrow escape. I’ll go buy the tickets.”

Lena clearly wanted to explore too.

“But the tickets are kind of pricey. They are $300 each!”

She looked at Lamont timidly as she shivered in the cold wind.

Lamont quickly wrapped his arms around her, pinched her nose, and warmed her hands.

“Silly girl, if you want to have fun, don’t worry about $300. I’d go with you even if it cost $30,000!”

Hovering in the air, I listened in shock.

During our relationship, whenever I spent even a little money, he would call me vain and lavish, even if that money was my own.

He never gave me gifts for holidays either.

On our first anniversary, we went on our first trip together.

When we passed a scenic spot, I pouted and said I wanted to check it out.

For a $20 admission fee, he berated me in the street while pointing at my face.

“What’s the point of going there? Isn’t $20 still a lot of money?!

“Serena, how can you be so wasteful? You’d better be saving money. Money grows when you save it!”

He shoved me roughly to the ground.

A glass ornament fell from my pocket and shattered.

Lamont saw it and stomped on it viciously. Then, he stormed off.

“Let’s just break up! If you get even a little bit of money, you waste it on useless trinkets. Aren’t you too old to be acting so childish?

“You make me sick!”

Through tear-filled eyes, I stared at the shattered ornament. It revealed a corner of a photograph.

This was my anniversary gift to him. It had taken almost half a year to craft it.

I poured my heart into it. I had hidden our first photo together inside it.

I stared at the photo he had stomped on as tears streamed down my face.

When I watched Lamont and Lena buying park tickets arm-in-arm, my heart ached but no tears emerged from my eyes.

Lena suddenly slapped her forehead.

“Lamont, have you contacted Serena? She can’t still be trapped in the rubble, can she? That could be deadly!”

Lamont sighed in annoyance.

“Lena, you’re just too kind!

“What’s so great about Serena that you worry about her so much?

“If she hadn’t set us up, would we have ended up fleeing to this place in such a mess yesterday?

“I hope that someone has died!

“A venomous woman like her deserves to rot in filth!

“Come on, let’s go have some fun and relax. Don’t let that parasite ruin our mood!”

“Lamont, calm down. I’m worried about Serena. She is your wife, after all. I care about you, so I care about her…”

Lena suddenly stopped talking, yanked Lamont’s collar down, and pressed her lips against his.

During the passionate kiss, she clung desperately to his neck, as if trying to merge herself into his body.

Lamont pushed her away with a complicated look on his face.

“Lena, I have a wife! We can’t do this!”

Lena lowered her head shyly.

“I’m sorry, Lamont. I just couldn’t hold myself back.”

Lost in their passion, they had completely forgotten about me, who was still trapped beneath the rebars.

This was not supposed to happen to me at all. It was Lena’s quick actions that dragged me in to be her shield!

When the quake first hit, I had warned them to evacuate immediately.

While other tourists scrambled for safety, the two of them strolled along as if touring their own backyard. They dismissed my concerns as an overreaction.

They lived carelessly, yet it was my life that had ended.

The steel rebars pierced through my chest.

The blood froze onto the rebars. Every breath felt like my body was being sliced open.

I desperately reached for my phone and called Lamont repeatedly until my battery died. He never answered even one call.

She was planning to kill her and then…”Lena shrieked and lunged forward. She wrestled violently with the client. He kicked her hard and sent her crashing to the floor.“The autopsy report is out, isn’t it?“Lena murdered Serena! Finally, unable to contain himself, he punched Lena across the face.“You killed my wife! I’ll kill you!”Police rushed forward to restrain him. Lamont walked into the police station in a daze. When he saw the man in the interrogation room, he froze. This was the very client who had provided him with the explicit photos of his wife!“Mr. Steward, this man was selling photos of your wife.“However, our investigation confirmed all those photos were created using AI face-swapping.”The police officer placed a stack of photos before Lamont. He picked them up to look, and his hands trembled more with each glance.“AI face-swapping? You mean none of these photos are of her?”The officer nodded.Lamont frantically borrowed a computer and immediately restored the faces in the photos. This left him stunned.I drifted over to look, momentarily at a loss for words. The person in those photos was none other than Lena!Lamont glared at Lena in hatred. She turned pale with fright. She reached out to grab Lamont.“Lamont, listen to me! This isn’t real. Someone’s trying to frame me!”Lamont looked conflicted. If Serena was fr

As the forensic scalpel sliced open my bloated abdomen, Lena was nestled in Lamont’s arms. Her fingers interlaced tightly with his, and she held the rosary in the same hand. How laughable!I watched it all with a cold detachment. The next day, the truth would be revealed. My conscience was clear.I could guarantee this child was Lamont’s.Those photos were certainly planted to frame me!I watched Lamont with a cold smile.I wondered if he would regret it once he learned the truth!Early the next morning, Lamont was jolted awake by urgent knocking. It was the coroner delivering the autopsy report.A trace of reluctance and disgust flashed in Lamont’s eyes.At Lena’s urging, he had already thrown out every single thing I had left in the room.He had already decided I was a filthy, wanton woman. My death was entirely my own fault. It was divine punishment!“Mr. Steward, the autopsy results are in. Please take a look.”The coroner handed over the report.“What a pity about y

Lamont’s face changed instantly. Lena pressed her advantage.“Maybe even the Lord could not stand it anymore! “Serena did you wrong. This is her punishment!”Lena reached out and traced circles on Lamont’s body.“Actually, it’s better that Serena is gone. All her assets are yours now! “She poured all of herself into her career and couldn’t give you what you wanted. Now, you don’t even have to go through the hassle of divorcing her. “Besides, don’t you like me? I’m divorced, and you’re widowed. All obstacles between us are gone. I can be with you…”Lamont remained silent for a long time before his voice came out dryly.“But those are two human lives, after all.“Even if I feel nothing for her… even if I hate her for cheating on me… she was still my wife who was by my side for five years!”When my client approached him and showed him those explicit photos, Lamont must have been furious. His pride as a man had been challenged. But even after thinking hard, he did not conf

She knelt before Lamont as tears streamed down her face. “It’s my fault, Lamont!” Startled, Lamont scrambled to help her up. “Get up, Lena! What nonsense are you sprouting?” Lena stubbornly shook her head. “It was me! I was holding Serena’s hand then. She could have dodged it. I was so scared that I held onto her tighter! “I dragged Serena into this. If not for me… if not for me…” Tears streamed down Lena’s face as she raised her hand and slapped herself across the face. “It’s all my fault. I dragged Serena into this! “I’ll make it up to her, Lamont!” After that, she stood up, grabbed a rebar from the roadside, and raised it as if to stab herself with it. “Enough!” Lamont’s eyes blazed with fury as he snatched the rebar from Lena’s hands. “What are you doing? No matter what, you can’t hurt yourself!” Lena cried and threw herself recklessly into his arms. Lamont hesitated as he watched Lena cry. He was on the verge of breaking down himself, but he still pu

Lamont staggered back a couple of steps and knocked the car keys off the nightstand. The note that had been pinned beneath the keys fluttered to the ground and was soaked in the puddle on the floor.Lamont crouched down shakily and picked up the note.[Hubby, this is my first surprise for you. There’s another one waiting. I want to tell you in person later!]Lamont clenched the note tightly. The veins on his hands bulged. He nearly crushed the paper to shreds.Lamont suddenly thought of something and dashed out like a madman. His hair was disheveled. The strands on his forehead clung to his face. He looked every bit like a lunatic. He slammed his fist on the front desk.“Where’s my wife?“Where is she? I called you! Didn’t you say she came back?!”The clerk at the front desk trembled in fear.“I hadn’t finished explaining at that time. The person who arrived was not Ms. Dallas who checked in with you. That person claimed to be her close friend and presented relevant proof.
