Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
The next second, a violent force grabbed my arm and threw me back onto the ground.

"Maxine, you lunatic! If you want to die, don't do it here! Is putting on a pathetic spectacle fun for you?"

Leonard had actually followed me up.

I stared at him blankly.

Why wasn't he at the wedding? Why had he come looking for me instead?

A tiny, uncontrollable flicker of hope rose in my chest.

"Why aren't you at Evelyn's wedding?" I asked, looking up at him, desperately searching his eyes for even a shred of concern or heartache. "Did you follow me here because you were worried?"

But the only answer I received was a harsh, stinging slap across my face.

"You pull a stunt like this just to get attention, and you still claim you're not here to ruin things?" Leonard sneered. "Were you planning to film a suicide video, hoping we'd halt the wedding to come looking for you? Maxine, you really are despicable."

My cheek burned, but Leonard's words sent a chill straight through me.

So, this was how he saw me?

For a split second, I had actually thought he came after me because he was worried.

I was wrong. As expected, I should never have allowed myself to hope.

Ultimately, he was just Evelyn's loyal lapdog, always putting her peace of mind above all else. He could watch the woman he loved marry another man, help organize her wedding, and even vow to remain unmarried for life in her honor.

Now, suspecting I would ruin the wedding and coming to stop me made perfect sense.

I tried to explain.

"I won't disturb them, and I'm not sending any videos. I really am going to jump."

Leonard scoffed, convinced I was merely putting on a brave face after being called out.

"Who are you trying to fool? Someone who clings to life as desperately as you would never have the guts to die. If you're so brave, then jump! Go on, jump!"

I stood up and walked back to the safety railing, then stepped right over.

Before my other foot could clear the ledge, Leonard yanked me back again.

Anger burned in those once dewy, puppy-like eyes.

"Did you have to pick Evelyn's wedding day to die? She's getting married right over there. If you cause a scene, what's going to happen to her wedding? I'm telling you—even if you want to die, you can't do it today. Don't you dare bring Evelyn bad luck!"

Still the same rhetoric. He truly had his heart and mind filled with nothing but Evelyn.

But what about me? What did all my years of devotion to him count for?

When he was bullied, I stepped up for him and fought those thugs in the alleyways.

When he had no money for food, I begged my father, Richard Swanson, to funnel my own allowance to him under the guise of a scholarship, just so I wouldn't hurt his pride.

When his grades plummeted, I stayed up late studying teaching materials and writing detailed notes just to tutor him.

When he said he had no family, I told him I was his family.

I had once asked the system, since Leonard was still so young, when would he finally understand what love meant.

The system had replied that the affection score encompassed not just romantic love but familial love as well.

Back then, I was so confident. I believed that even if Leonard didn't love me romantically, he still loved me like family.

But the affection progress bar, which had been rising little by little, plummeted after Evelyn's return.

His love for me vanished completely.

Leonard was still rambling on.

"No matter how big a scene you make, William won't give you the time of day. If you truly love him, then let him be happy. Do yourself a favor and just go home. Don't make things difficult for them."

With him standing guard here, jumping was out of the question. Besides, splattering my brains across the pavement would be an ugly, messy sight anyway.

I nodded, not bothering to waste another glance on him. "You're right. I'll be going now."

Angelo swept a contemptuous gaze over Adam, Leonard, and William."Open your damn eyes and take a good look!" he snarled. "This is the precious little princess you've been doting on. You believed Evelyn's lies and turned a blind eye to the harm Maxine suffered."Not only did you beat and berate Maxine, but you also abandoned her. The three of you were the source of every torment she ever suffered!"Leonard, the youngest of them, charged at Evelyn first. "I'll kill you!"No one could have anticipated what happened next. Evelyn whipped out a hidden knife and plunged it straight into Leonard. With a sickening squelch, blood splattered across her face."I've already completed my mission! I'm the female lead now, so what does it matter if the rest of you die?" she shrieked, her voice manic."You must've lost your goddamn mind!" Adam roared.Evelyn suddenly rushed toward my tombstone. Instinct driving him, Angelo threw his body forward to shield it. With a savage grin, Evelyn lunge

I followed Angelo everywhere, watching him tire himself out with my funeral arrangements. Every night, he tossed and turned, unable to sleep. On the day of my birthday, Angelo placed a birthday cake in front of my tombstone. When Adam, Leonard, and William finally came hurrying over, Angelo was the only one standing there. "Didn't you say there was a funeral? Why is it just you?""It's already over," Angelo said, his voice flat. "Monsters like you aren't worthy of sending Maxine off."William spotted the cake, and his tone turned icy. "What's with the cake? You're using that as a funeral offering?"Angelo turned to face them. The three of them stood there in crisp, expensive suits, while Evelyn stood beside them, her face perfectly made up. "So, you all just finished celebrating Evelyn's birthday? How nice," Angelo sneered. "Do any of you even remember that today is Maxine's birthday too?"The moment those words landed, all their expressions shifted.Evelyn scrambled to hi

The first to rush over was Leonard. His immediate reaction upon seeing me was that I was faking my death again."What is this nonsense? Isn't Maxine supposed to be at the live-in healthcare facility? As if all her suicide attempts weren't enough, now she's using a corpse to stage her death just to fish for sympathy?"But the look in Angelo's eyes was far too chilling for it to be a prank.Besides, my corpse wasn't exactly a pretty sight. My face was pale with a bluish tint, and my cheeks were sunken. It was the undeniable picture of death."Live-in healthcare facility? I rescued her from some backwater mountain village," Angelo said, looking at Leonard with pure hatred. "Do you really think Evelyn is some kind of saint? She was the one who sent Maxine to that place, where she was watched every second, fed nothing but scraps, and treated like a prisoner!"Adam, who had just arrived, stepped in and shot back without a second thought, "That's impossible! Evelyn isn't that kind of per

Evelyn left.I lay on the ground, barely clinging to life. Not long after, a series of muffled thuds reverberated from outside the door. Then, someone rushed in and gently lifted me into their arms. "Maxine, I'm sorry I'm late."It was Angelo. He had understood my silent call for help. The dam broke, and the tears I had been holding back burst forth instantly. "Angelo, please take me away.""Alright, let's go."He cradled me with agonizing care, his touch just as gentle as the day we first met. Angelo took me to his lodgings. The moment we arrived, he fetched his medical kit and began meticulously treating my wounds. Only then did I learn what had brought him to this remote place. Back then, he had crossed Evelyn by treating my shattered fingers. In retaliation, she used her influence to get him fired from the hospital. "After that, I joined a medical aid program and spent my time traveling between different underdeveloped regions."Seeing how rough and calloused hi

That night, Angelo never showed up. Instead, Evelyn did. She was wearing a magnificent dress, twirling in front of me with an insufferable smirk. "Doesn't it look beautiful?" She giggled. "William bought it for me. I bet you're so jealous and miserable right now you just want to die. But the joke is, you can't even manage that, can you? How pitiful. You want to know a secret? I was the one who found you when you took all those sleeping pills."And then I deliberately told everyone that you'd sent me a message saying you were faking another suicide attempt for attention. I used to live in this house as a child, you know. They all think I sent you to a high-end live-in healthcare facility… but a dump like this is the only place you're fit to die in."I gave her no reaction.Displeased by my silence, Evelyn reached out and aggressively gripped my chin, forcing my face up so I had to meet her eyes."Maxine, you're not even a Swanson. What gave you the right to grow up in luxury wi

Evenlyn stood quietly in the far corner of the hospital room. She hadn't uttered a single syllable since my fractured fingers were confirmed, after her frantic attempt to slander me yet again. Now, she wore a mask of gentleness, feigning concern as though she cared only for my well-being. "Maxine must have suffered such a shock that she's no longer herself. Why not send her to a live-in healthcare facility—somewhere away from all this, where she can rest and heal in peace?"Adam hesitated, but Leonard agreed instantly. William looked at me, the brief flash of panic in his eyes hardening back into his usual distant, disappointed gentleness. "Maxine, you really should leave this place to clear your head."But I refused. If I entered a live-in healthcare facility, how was I supposed to commit suicide?"I won't go!"Unfortunately, they dismissed my protest as delusion and decided to send me away.Everything sharp was removed from my hospital room. Even my daily medications were
