Chapter 4

Author: Fragrant Night
I turned to leave, still hearing Dexter's whining and Jasmine's low, soothing voice behind me.

"Don't stay upset anymore. It's not good for your heart," she said to him.

I quickened my pace, refusing to look back even once.

I never thought that Jasmine and Dexter would hop to action that quickly.

A couple of social media influencers live-streamed to their audience as they pointed their cameras at my front door, throwing rotten eggs, splashing red paint, and even spray-painting "Get lost, cheater!" on it.

I stood a short distance away, watching them destroy my place, suddenly realizing how absurd it was that they were accusing me of cheating when I was the one being cheated on. Besides, the real "side-chick" was sleeping peacefully next to my ex-wife.

I pulled out my phone and texted Jasmine.

"What's the meaning of the rotten eggs at my door?"

She didn't reply. But ten minutes later, my bank app lit up with a bank transfer notification. Only a single word was written in the transfer notes.

"Compensation."

I stared at the amount and chuckled.

It was compensation again. Jasmine always thought that every problem could be solved with money, as if the suffering and grievances I went through could be forgiven with a bank transfer.

I suddenly remembered the first time she "compensated" me like this. It was when I found Dexter's underwear in our bed.

I had come home earlier than expected from a business trip that day, and after pushing the bedroom door open, I saw the garment carelessly lying at the foot of the bed.

Jasmine came out of the shower just then, her hair still wet and messy.

I grilled her about the underwear, and she didn't even flinch as she replied, "It is exactly what you think it is."

I flew into a rage and demanded an explanation from her, losing my cool and screaming at her in the process. I trashed the room and asked her how she could do this to me.

But Jasmine remained silent throughout the entire ordeal. Ultimately, she transferred me a sum of money and said, "We can divorce if you want. You can leave."

But why?

"Why should I be the one leaving? I'm also part of this household!"

She went silent for a long while. Finally, she looked me in the eyes and said, "Noah, you know that I was the only one who didn't care about your past and still married you back then. Nobody else would have ever done that."

Silence hung in the air for a very long time after what she said.

That was the first time she deliberately hurt me by bringing up that incident.

What happened back in college wasn't my fault. And yet, she used it as an excuse to make it seem like I was "unworthy" of her.

Later on, she apologized and said that it was just something she'd blurted out in the heat of the moment.

However, I knew that it wasn't a mistake. It was what she thought of me. She had never really accepted me for me.

I snapped back to the present and stared at the "compensation" notification on my phone. Then, I took a screenshot and saved it to my gallery.

Every "compensation" she gave me was solid proof. I sent the screenshot to Vernon at once.

The next day, rumors accusing me of plagiarism spread online like wildfire. My name, my photo, and the college incident were all screenshotted and posted on the worldwide web for everyone to see.

I never thought that Jasmine would even tell Dexter about that incident. Who did she take me for?

And what did she actually take my worst fear and most traumatic experience for? Some sort of gossip for small talk? A bargaining chip to please her new lover?

I stared at the malicious comments attacking me on the internet.

Why? Why were the wrongdoers allowed to strut around triumphantly while the real victim was hounded at every turn?

Why did Jasmine and Dexter get to walk away unscathed while I was torn apart by the entire internet?

Just then, my phone buzzed with a text message from Vernon.

"The evidence is all set."

"Okay," I replied.

"Jasmine and Dexter will be holding their engagement party at The Grand Luxe Hotel in three days."

I made a call.

"Get me an invitation to the engagement party."

Three days later, I showed up in a bespoke black suit and walked into the ballroom as if I belonged there.

Dexter was dressed in a white tuxedo, with Jasmine's hand wrapped around his arm. He smiled brilliantly at all the guests as he sought out their blessings.

I took out my phone and began to live-stream.

"Good day, everyone. My name is Noah Hardin."

I gradually made my way onto the stage, my leather shoes clicking soundly against the marble flooring.

Jasmine finally caught sight of me, and her gaze sharpened at once.

I continued, "I'm taking all of you on a tour of the engagement party hosted by my ex-wife and my foster brother."

I was satisfied with Jasmine's appearance."Really?" I said. "Congratulations. You've finally become just like me."She froze for a moment before smiling bitterly. That smile held tons of indescribable emotions—self-mockery, exhaustion, weariness, and a hint of resignation."Noah," she suddenly said, calling out to me. "Do you still hate me?"I thought about it.When I died in my previous life, she had stood by my hospital bed wearing that gray coat I bought for her. She'd said, "If I knew how obsessive you'd turn out to be, I would never have married you in the first place."At that time, I thought that the person I hated the most in my lifetime would be her. I thought that the hatred would seep into my bones and make me never want to see her again, not even in my next life. But now that she was seated before me with a tired, haggard look on her face, apologizing profusely to me, I suddenly realized that I didn't hate her anymore."The biggest mistake I ever made in my life w

For the next three years, I had to live with everyone seeing me as a thief. However, Jasmine was the one who stood by my side and said, "I believe you, Noah."She broke her promise back then. And now, I knew that she would break her promise to me again.…The thunderstorm continued all night long.Early the next morning, the three major media outlets published their reports simultaneously."Maynard Group Under Fire for Massive Bribery Scandal. I reached out and patted Dexter on the cheek."I've already died a horrible death once. But this time, you and Jasmine will be the ones dying horrible deaths instead."He didn't understand what I meant, but it was fine. It was only a matter of time.I looked at his twisted expression. It reminded me of when we were little. He was only five years old when he first arrived home. He used to be a scared little thing, standing at the door and not daring to come in.Mom gently pulled him into the house and introduced me to him. She said, "This is Dexter, your new younger brother. Dexter, this is your new older brother, Noah."Dexter kept his head low and greeted me in a timid voice.Back then, I was eight years old. I thought that he was very pitiful because his parents abandoned him, and that he was forced to live with a new, foreign family now.I reached out and took his hand. "It's okay. You don't have to be afraid. I'll protect you."I had protected him for more than 20 years. A

The only thing Jasmine responded with to Dexter's long wall of text was, "Stop overthinking. It's bad for the heart."In the past, whenever Jasmine said the same thing to him, it was always out of care and concern, and maybe a little panic. But now, it felt more like she was just brushing him off with the same words, merely perfunctory and performative, like there already was an invisible wall between them both. All of the tactics Dexter used on her to snatch her away from me failed because she didn't love him anymore. Or, perhaps she never loved him from the start. She probably just thought he was a better choice than me.But now, she knew that he was not better than me. In fact, he was a lot worse and "dirtier" than she expected.Jasmine soon began texting me.At first, she would use the guise of handling the divorce proceedings in a strictly businesslike manner."The tax bureau needs your signature.""Did you receive a copy of the share transfer agreement?"Then, it beca

Jasmine's expression finally shifted. Her pupils constricted suddenly, and she stared at the photo for a very, very long time without another word. The cafe played soft music in the background, and a few friends chatted and laughed at the table next to ours, but their voices somehow sounded distant.Jasmine wore the exact same look on her face in my past life too.She finally spoke, asking in a hoarse voice, "What's the meaning of this?""Nothing much. I just thought that you deserved to know the truth," I replied."How did you find out about this?""It doesn't matter. All you need to know is that you destroyed our seven-year marriage for someone like Dexter. You gave me up for him."She took the photo and put it inside her bag in slow motion, as though she were trying to digest it. She didn't ask why I only thought to tell her now. She didn't demand to know why I hadn't told her sooner.Instead, she only said four words."I'll investigate this myself."I admired the disappoi

When I checked my phone again, the comments in the comments section were in a complete uproar."Holy shit, this is some damning evidence!""Does that mean Dexter has been seducing his own sister-in-law for three years? No, wait, since Jasmine's and Noah's first anniversary? Noah was still happily celebrating it with her back then!""Did you hear the recording? The part where Dexter said, 'Jazzy and I both think that bed is bad luck'? I got goosebumps just listening to it! He knew exactly what he was doing to Noah!""And his chat history? 'There's nothing special about Noah anyway'? Excuse me? Noah paid for that jerk's tuition and found him a job and let him move in, and that's how he paid him back?"Public opinion quickly shifted, and netizens soon picked apart Dexter's social media. He was labeled a "serial homewrecker", with no way for him to remove it.Dexter published a post with only four words."It's not like that."The first comment asked, "What's not like that? You mean
