Chapter 3

Author: Fragrant Night
Jasmine slid an arm around the back of Dexter's waist and patted his back with the other hand, speaking in a gentle voice that I found extremely foreign.

"It's okay. I'm here."

The concern and anxiety on her face were real. They were also something that I'd rarely ever seen in our seven years of marriage.

I stood at the doorway, watching them, and suddenly broke into a smile.

How hilarious.

This woman, who thought of me as an obsessive madman, was actually treating another person with such tenderness.

I opened the front door, allowing the night breeze to blow in. I heard Jasmine's voice behind me say, "Be careful on your way back."

Who did she think she was fooling?

I went to my studio the next day and realized that the lock was broken. Someone had broken in and completely trashed my studio.

My drafts and sketches had been ripped up and scattered across the floor, my easels and paintbrushes were broken, and three large words were spray-painted on the walls in red.

"Get lost, cheater!"

I had spent three months preparing drafts and sketches for my exhibition next month, but now they were all gone.

I hadn't even snapped back to my senses when I heard my neighbors whispering amongst themselves.

"Heard that? Noah finally agreed to the divorce."

"Yeah. And you know what a good person Jasmine is. I bet Noah did something outrageous to her. Otherwise, she wouldn't have insisted on divorcing him."

I was dazed.

Those words felt too familiar. It had been the exact same situation as back then, in my past life.

Jasmine protected Dexter by spreading lies and rumors about me being insane in the head, accusing me of obsessively stalking and pestering her, and painting me as the root cause of the divorce. I fought back by exposing her misdeeds and making a huge fuss at her company, spilling all the beans to the public.

But as it turned out, everyone only treated me like I'd lost my mind, accusing me of being a psycho and deserving of being locked up in a mental hospital forever.

And so, Jasmine seized the opportunity and locked me up in the psychiatric hospital when I threw another fuss at the general hospital.

Back then, the "diagnosis" report read, "This patient has paranoid personality disorder. In-patient treatment is highly recommended."

Jasmine was the one who signed the document.

I shook off the memories and walked straight up to the people who were gossiping about me.

"You think that I cheated? Then, tell me, who exactly did I cheat on her with?"

They were shocked by my sudden appearance and stammered for a long time trying to answer me, exchanging glances with one another.

Just then, Dexter suddenly appeared in the hallway and walked up to me with an innocent smile on his face.

"Come on, Noah. Of course you're the only one who would know whom you cheated on Jazzy with."

His eyes were smug when he spoke to me. I just met him with my expressionless eyes and said, "Everyone, there's only one of us here who is the real cheater. Wanna guess who it is?"

Dexter's face turned pale. The people around us were stunned as well.

But right at that moment, Jasmine also turned up out of the blue and rushed over to us, shielding Dexter behind her.

She frowned at me and said, "We're already divorced, Noah. Stop attacking Dexter like this."

I stared at her. "So, you're admitting that you were the ones who spread the false rumors about me?"

She didn't admit it, but she didn't deny it either. She only said, "You're going overboard."

"I'm going overboard?"

I turned to Dexter and said, "Tell me, Dexter. Have I ever let you down or wronged you growing up?

"I was the one who paid for your college tuition. I was the one who recommended you for a job at the company. I was the one who offered to let you move in with us. And this is how you repay me? By harboring impure thoughts toward your own sister-in-law?"

Dexter glared at me without a word.

I then turned to Jasmine and enunciated each word clearly.

"You're the one who kicked me out of the relationship, and now, you're also the one playing the good person in the public eye. You're absolutely disgusting."

Jasmine's gaze turned cold. However, she didn't let it show on her face. Instead, she spoke to me condescendingly.

"You've gone overboard this time, Noah. You'd better calm down right now before things get ugly."

She was always like this—calm, collected, and most concerned about her ego.

I straightened up and made myself clear.

"You think that I've gone overboard, Jasmine Maynard? I'll show you what it really means to be going overboard."

The reason I was reborn was to protect myself. I was here to exact revenge on them and make them pay, not to suffer another round of torment.

I was satisfied with Jasmine's appearance."Really?" I said. "Congratulations. You've finally become just like me."She froze for a moment before smiling bitterly. That smile held tons of indescribable emotions—self-mockery, exhaustion, weariness, and a hint of resignation."Noah," she suddenly said, calling out to me. "Do you still hate me?"I thought about it.When I died in my previous life, she had stood by my hospital bed wearing that gray coat I bought for her. She'd said, "If I knew how obsessive you'd turn out to be, I would never have married you in the first place."At that time, I thought that the person I hated the most in my lifetime would be her. I thought that the hatred would seep into my bones and make me never want to see her again, not even in my next life. But now that she was seated before me with a tired, haggard look on her face, apologizing profusely to me, I suddenly realized that I didn't hate her anymore."The biggest mistake I ever made in my life w

That incident that happened in college had been my biggest nightmare. The design I submitted for a competition was dismissed, and a prominent figure in the design field accused me of plagiarism.I reported it to the police, but the case went nowhere because I didn't have enough evidence. For the next three years, I had to live with everyone seeing me as a thief. However, Jasmine was the one who stood by my side and said, "I believe you, Noah."She broke her promise back then. And now, I knew that she would break her promise to me again.…The thunderstorm continued all night long.Early the next morning, the three major media outlets published their reports simultaneously."Maynard Group Under Fire for Massive Bribery Scandal. I reached out and patted Dexter on the cheek."I've already died a horrible death once. But this time, you and Jasmine will be the ones dying horrible deaths instead."He didn't understand what I meant, but it was fine. It was only a matter of time.I looked at his twisted expression. It reminded me of when we were little. He was only five years old when he first arrived home. He used to be a scared little thing, standing at the door and not daring to come in.Mom gently pulled him into the house and introduced me to him. She said, "This is Dexter, your new younger brother. Dexter, this is your new older brother, Noah."Dexter kept his head low and greeted me in a timid voice.Back then, I was eight years old. I thought that he was very pitiful because his parents abandoned him, and that he was forced to live with a new, foreign family now.I reached out and took his hand. "It's okay. You don't have to be afraid. I'll protect you."I had protected him for more than 20 years. A

The only thing Jasmine responded with to Dexter's long wall of text was, "Stop overthinking. It's bad for the heart."In the past, whenever Jasmine said the same thing to him, it was always out of care and concern, and maybe a little panic. But now, it felt more like she was just brushing him off with the same words, merely perfunctory and performative, like there already was an invisible wall between them both. All of the tactics Dexter used on her to snatch her away from me failed because she didn't love him anymore. Or, perhaps she never loved him from the start. She probably just thought he was a better choice than me.But now, she knew that he was not better than me. In fact, he was a lot worse and "dirtier" than she expected.Jasmine soon began texting me.At first, she would use the guise of handling the divorce proceedings in a strictly businesslike manner."The tax bureau needs your signature.""Did you receive a copy of the share transfer agreement?"Then, it beca

Jasmine's expression finally shifted. Her pupils constricted suddenly, and she stared at the photo for a very, very long time without another word. The cafe played soft music in the background, and a few friends chatted and laughed at the table next to ours, but their voices somehow sounded distant.Jasmine wore the exact same look on her face in my past life too.She finally spoke, asking in a hoarse voice, "What's the meaning of this?""Nothing much. I just thought that you deserved to know the truth," I replied."How did you find out about this?""It doesn't matter. All you need to know is that you destroyed our seven-year marriage for someone like Dexter. You gave me up for him."She took the photo and put it inside her bag in slow motion, as though she were trying to digest it. She didn't ask why I only thought to tell her now. She didn't demand to know why I hadn't told her sooner.Instead, she only said four words."I'll investigate this myself."I admired the disappoi

When I checked my phone again, the comments in the comments section were in a complete uproar."Holy shit, this is some damning evidence!""Does that mean Dexter has been seducing his own sister-in-law for three years? No, wait, since Jasmine's and Noah's first anniversary? Noah was still happily celebrating it with her back then!""Did you hear the recording? The part where Dexter said, 'Jazzy and I both think that bed is bad luck'? I got goosebumps just listening to it! He knew exactly what he was doing to Noah!""And his chat history? 'There's nothing special about Noah anyway'? Excuse me? Noah paid for that jerk's tuition and found him a job and let him move in, and that's how he paid him back?"Public opinion quickly shifted, and netizens soon picked apart Dexter's social media. He was labeled a "serial homewrecker", with no way for him to remove it.Dexter published a post with only four words."It's not like that."The first comment asked, "What's not like that? You mean
