I Died To Prove My Mother Was Fair

To prove she wasn't playing favorites, I was the first person to donate blood at the Pack Blood Drive my mother had organized. The drive had been ordered by the North American Lycan Council after a rogue attack overwhelmed three regional blood banks. If Silverpine Pack met its quota before midnight, Mom would pass the final review for the promotion she had pursued for seven years. The collection bag had barely reached one hundred milliliters when my vision darkened. My heart battered against my ribs so hard that every beat hurt. I reached for the clamp on the tubing. "Could you stop? I think something is wrong." Tessa, the technician assigned to me, caught my wrist. "Do not touch the line. A standard unit is four hundred and fifty milliliters." She studied my bloodless face with open irritation. "Every other donor finished. If the director's daughter quits, what do you think people will say?" Mom stood only a few steps away, her brows furrowed. "Lyra, being my daughter does not exempt you from the rules. It means you should be especially careful to follow them. If your screening says you are eligible, finish the unit." I tried to remind her that my medical file carried a permanent donation restriction. Then I saw the temporary silver commission badge pinned above her heart. She had spent seven years earning it. If this was what she needed from me, I could endure a little longer. Blood continued sliding through the clear tube. By the time the third sample vial was filled, every sound in the hall seemed to move underwater. Before I lost consciousness, I had only one thought. I am sorry, Mom. I wanted so badly to help you reach the final number. This time, I do not think I can.

The investigations lasted six months.Tessa lost her medical license and faced criminal charges for falsifying records, performing an unlawful collection, and failing to obtain emergency care. Her attorney argued that she had not known I would die.The prosecutor answered, "She did not need to predict death. She needed to stop when the machine displayed DONATION PROHIBITED."The final report did not excuse Mom. Although she had not altered the data herself, she used her authority to place me in a situation where refusal was not real. She knew my history. She heard me ask to stop. She placed her professional image above my safety. She was permanently barred from the Regional Pack Relief Agency. The Council revoked the promotion and created independent medical screening rules for every pack drive. No event director could interfere with donor eligibility. Donation totals could never again be tied directly to an individual official's promotion.Mom did not appeal. The prosecutor ultimately

Investigators secured every device that night. By morning, digital forensics had recovered the deleted screening data.[HEMOGLOBIN: 7.4 g/dL][DONATION PROHIBITED]Three minutes later, Tessa's staff credentials were used to delete the result and manually enter a new one.[HEMOGLOBIN: 12.6 g/dL]She had also erased two blood-pressure readings.[78/46 mmHg][71/42 mmHg]Either number required immediate termination of collection and an emergency response.Mom sat behind one-way glass while Tessa was questioned."I was trying to help her complete the target," Tessa sobbed. "The Council needed one more unit. If Silverpine failed, Evelyn would lose the promotion.""Why did you not call a paramedic after Lyra first lost consciousness?" the investigator asked."She woke up.""What did she say?"Tessa stared at the table."She said we had to stop. She said she would die."Mom closed her eyes.Security footage preserved what memory might otherwise have softened. Onscreen, my hand trembled after

Mom remained beside the cot, clutching my hand as if her warmth could travel backward through time."Try again," she kept saying. "Her wolf makes her stronger than a human. She survived so much when she was little. She can survive this."The paramedic turned the monitor toward her."Evelyn, she is dead."Mom flinched: "Do not call her that. Her name is Lyra. She is my daughter."Pack security sealed the bay. The collection machine, staff tablets, records, and the bag containing my blood became evidence.Tessa stood outside the curtain."Her screening passed. I followed the procedure. She could answer questions. How was I supposed to know she would suddenly collapse?""Were you responsible for both her screening and collection?" the security officer asked."Yes, but she agreed to continue. Evelyn was present."Mom slowly faced her."You said it was a vasovagal reaction. You said her vital signs were fine.""That was what the equipment showed. She kept moving, which is why the needle had

Mom stared as though the words belonged to a language she did not know."What are you saying?"The paramedic met her eyes: "Lyra is dead."At that exact moment, the tablet on the desk lit up.[Congratulations, Acting Regional Director Evelyn Hart.]Mom did not look at the promotion notice. For several seconds she stood perfectly still. Then she shook her head."No. She was angry with me. She is waiting for me to go to her."Tessa had turned white."There must be a mistake. Lyra fainted because of the needle. Her screening was normal."The paramedic did not answer her."Please come confirm her identity."Mom moved so abruptly that she struck the chair behind her. The silver badge case fell from the table. The Regional Director pin hit the floor with a bright, useless chime.I followed her into the corridor. The recovery bay was only one floor below, but halfway there she began to run."Lyra!"For the first time in years, she shouted my name in front of everyone without calculating who m
