Chapter 2

Autor: Washing Wheat
"I'll get the stain out."

Mom gave a contemptuous snort and slammed the bedroom door in my face.

I stayed in the hallway alone, scrubbing at the blood until the carpet looked clean. Then I went back to the windowless room off the kitchen where the housekeeper used to sleep.

As soon as I lay down on the hard wooden bed, pain surged through my bones again.

Three days earlier, in the hematology department at the city hospital, the doctor had studied my test results with regret in his eyes.

"Advanced acute myeloid leukemia," he'd said. "You need a bone marrow transplant as soon as possible. An immediate family member would be the best place to start looking for a match. Can we contact your parents?"

I'd gripped the flimsy sheet of paper and shaken my head.

"I don't have parents."

I was an adopted orphan. Where was I supposed to find a biological relative?

So I'd given up on treatment. I'd taken the $10,000 I'd saved waiting tables and tutoring over the years and put it toward a burial plot outside the city. I still owed another $1,700. If I could survive two more months, I thought I might earn enough to pay it off.

Then I'd overheard the conversation outside my parents' bedroom.

I did have parents. Two people in this very house might have been able to save my life.

But I didn't want to ask them anymore.

The next morning, I forced myself out of bed despite the pain and went downstairs to make breakfast, as usual.

Nolan Voss sat at the dining table looking every inch the young heir, dressed in a brand-new designer jacket. Two weeks earlier, I'd stood outside a department-store window staring at that same jacket for ages.

Mom had told me it was far too expensive for someone who wasn't really family. Then she'd bought it for Nolan.

"Miles, you look awful today," Nolan said, innocently slicing into his fried egg. "Didn't sleep well? Here, have my milk. I'm not going to finish it anyway."

He pushed his half-empty glass toward me.

Mom immediately swept in, picked it up, and poured the milk down the sink.

"Your brother was kind enough to offer, Miles, but have you considered whether you deserve it? What if you're coming down with something and give it to Nolan? If you ruin his competition today, will you take responsibility?"

I watched the milk disappear down the drain. My stomach churned.

"I'm not hungry anymore."

I stood without looking at any of them.

Dad lowered his newspaper. "Hold it. Where do you think you're going? Your brother's competing today. Who's going to carry his things if you don't come?"

I turned back. My voice was rough with fever.

"I have an errand. I need to go to the Red Cross."

Mom scoffed. "The Red Cross? What for? You think if you put on a sad face and donate a little money, we'll finally see how thoughtful you are? Spare us the performance."

I didn't explain. I walked out into the painfully bright morning sun, stopped at the curb, and called the organ donation center.

"Hello. There's something I'd like to check. If I have advanced leukemia, can I still donate my corneas?"

"Who are you talking to?"

A black Maybach rolled up beside me. The tinted window lowered, revealing Dad's unsmiling face. One glance at me and his frown deepened.

"Get in."

I ended the call and climbed into the car. The air-conditioning made me shiver.

Instead of pulling away, Dad grabbed a manila envelope from the glove compartment and tossed it onto my lap.

"Take a look. Explain this."

The envelope wasn't sealed. Several test reports and an application for a family-matching DNA database slid out.

After my diagnosis, I'd submitted a blood sample behind their backs. I'd clung to the faint hope that somewhere out there I might find my biological parents. Since my family had always insisted I wasn't theirs, I'd decided I had nothing to lose by looking.

That was where their own son lay, dead because of what they'd done. It was also the prison they'd never escape for the rest of their lives.Three years later, in late autumn, a cold wind swept dead yellow leaves across the paved paths of the cemetery.Dad pushed Mom's wheelchair unsteadily toward a modest headstone and came to a stop. She'd wasted away until she was little more than skin and bone, her white hair tangled and wild. In her lap, she still gripped the robot model, its colors nearly worn away from years of washing."Miles, Mom and Dad are here to see you."Dad laid the inexpensive white carnations before the stone. His voice was as rough as sandpaper. There was no photograph on my grave. After searching every corner of the old Voss estate, my parents had discovered they didn't possess a single photograph of me alone from those nineteen years. The only picture they had was a family portrait where half my blurred profile showed at the very edge of the frame.Dad crouched

Mom had completely lost touch with reality. She clutched a filthy little robot model to her chest. It was the same limited-edition toy Nolan and I had fought over when we were six. Back then, she'd taken Nolan's side and made me stand in a corner as punishment. Now she called the toy "Miles" every day and seemed convinced that if she held it tightly enough, I could never leave her again."Graham, Miles says he's hungry. Where are we going to cook dinner for him?"She looked up at the curtain of rain with empty eyes.Dad didn't bother with an umbrella. Cold water poured down his face as he stared at the mansion's sealed gates. His mouth twisted into a bitter smile."Come on. I'm taking you both to our new home."They moved into a basement room in a neglected part of the city, barely two hundred square feet in size. Sunlight never reached it. Green mold spread across the walls, and whenever it rained, sewage backed up through the drains, filling the room with a sickening smell.Mo

Still spewing insults, Nolan raced upstairs, grabbed several expensive watches and whatever cash he could find, and fled the Voss estate that night. The mansion fell silent as a tomb again.I floated beside the window and watched him run. I didn't feel a trace of pity.Nolan wasn't evil in every possible way. He was simply greedy. He'd happily taken everything that should have been mine, yet he'd refused to accept responsibility for any of it. Now, at last, he was paying for that greed. The next day, Dad received a call from the Red Cross."Mr. Voss, I'm calling about your son Miles's cornea donation. The recipient is recovering well. His family would very much like to thank you in person, if you're willing to meet them."Dad's grip tightened around the phone."We'll meet them."That afternoon, he pushed Mom, who was barely aware of what was happening around her, through the hospital gardens in a wheelchair. The sun was shining.A boy of fifteen or sixteen approached with his

Over the next few days, the Voss household descended into complete chaos.Dad canceled every meeting and called in every favor he had to make sure Clive and Martha Haskett ended up behind bars. He even bribed a corrections officer to see that the two of them received "special attention."None of it eased his guilt.Night after night, he lay awake replaying the final phone call I'd made to him."Your birth parents wouldn't dare let you come back without my permission.""I'm going to die."Those two sentences cut through him again and again. He searched through everything I'd left in the little housekeeper's room. There wasn't much: a few battered books and an old accounting notebook. Its pages listed every bit of pocket money I'd earned doing household chores over nineteen years, along with the $10,000 I'd secretly put aside. On the last page, I'd written one sentence:"Once I've paid for my grave, I'll finally be free."Dad stared at it, covered his face, and let out a muffle

Mom stared at those final lines, her eyes wide and bloodshot."He knew... He knew all of it..."Her lips trembled. Her fingers loosened, and the letter floated down onto the carpet. It was the same wool carpet I'd bled on a few days before my death. The stain had already been cleaned, but Mom suddenly threw herself at that spot, clawing desperately at the fibers."Miles's blood... His blood was right here..."He knew he was our son. He watched us give Nolan everything. He watched us send him away... Why didn't he say anything? Why didn't he expose us?"Her voice cracked into a raw, desperate howl.At last, she understood my silence before I died. It hadn't been submission. It hadn't been an attempt to keep the peace.I'd simply stopped caring. With my death, I'd carved a divide through this family that none of them would ever cross.Dad collapsed onto the sofa and buried his face in his hands. The man who had never hesitated to crush a business rival was shaking so badly he c

Two officers restrained Mom. Nolan stood in the doorway with a handkerchief pressed to his mouth, tears falling freely."How could Miles be so foolish? Even if he was sick, he should've told Mom and Dad. Maybe he thought I'd taken his place and didn't want to burden the family..."Dad whipped around, glaring at Nolan like an enraged animal."Shut up!"Nolan flinched so hard that his carefully rehearsed expression almost slipped.Dad shoved past an officer and stormed out of the morgue. Clive and Martha Haskett were being escorted down the corridor. He grabbed them both."You animals! I told you to take care of him! What did you do to my son?"He punched Clive in the face.Clive shouted back, "Mr. Voss, what the hell are you hitting me for? Your assistant told us the boy wouldn't behave in the city! Said we needed to discipline him, and we could be as rough as we liked as long as we didn't kill him! How were we supposed to know he had a terminal illness? When he started bleeding
