Chapter 3

Author: Anonymous
Jade looked just as impressed.

I did not say a word. I just quietly started counting down the time and thought about how to leave.

At some point, Zach looked at me with a smirk and said, “Ivan, when are you going to start your own company so Jade can be the boss’s wife?”

The truth was, I never told Jade I actually owned part of the company.

Ryan invested the money, and I contributed my skills.

In the end, he gave me 30% of the shares.

So, really, I was a co-owner. I just did not like handling business decisions and left most of it to Ryan.

I even called him “boss” like everyone else.

To Jade, I was just an ordinary employee getting a monthly paycheck.

She clicked her tongue and said, “Come on.

“He’s the kind of guy who’ll be working for someone else his whole life.

“If I’m counting on him, I might as well wish for a miracle.

“You’d be better off asking him how not to get fired.”

Everyone laughed.

Jade, enjoying the attention, started telling embarrassing stories about me.

She talked about how I once fell into a smelly ditch trying to protect her, or how I knelt while begging her to eat breakfast.

If she called me, I had to show up right away. Otherwise, I was not allowed to come home.

Everyone laughed hard.

“So Ivan is Jade’s simp!”

“Looks like Jade really knows how to keep him in line!”

I clenched my teeth and took a big sip of the beer.

“It’s just a few silly things. I don’t even care.”

Everyone went quiet for a second.

“Ivan, no need to act tough just to save face.

“There’s nothing wrong with having a regular job. You’ll just be broke forever, that’s all.”

Zach laughed like I was a joke.

“Alright then, tell us. What major, amazing thing have you ever done?”

“Maybe he fell in that dirty ditch out of embarrassment!” someone added and laughed.

I looked at everyone and calmly said the name of a medicine that played a huge role during the pandemic.

Everyone went quiet again.

“You’re saying we got through the pandemic faster because of you?”

“Wow, someone’s really full of himself.”

“If that were true, you’d be rich by now. But look at you. Your clothes are cheap.”

Honestly, I was indeed rich from the profits, but growing up in the countryside taught me to live simply.

Even Jade knew nothing of this.

She looked annoyed.

“Okay, that’s enough. Stop making things up.”

As soon as she said that, everyone relaxed.

“See? Jade knows. Ivan just likes to brag.”

I looked straight at Zach and asked, “Then tell me, what kind of sugar do you use to make those candies? How long does it take to set?

“You said you invested. What exactly did you invest in?

“And if you donated to charity, where did the money go?”

Zach could not answer clearly. I caught him off guard, and he was speechless for a while.

In the end, he got mad.

“What’s it to you?

“Jade, what’s your boyfriend trying to do? Interrogate me?

“I came to hang out, not to be questioned!”

The more he spoke, the angrier he got.

Jade got scared and quickly tried to calm him down. Then, she glared at me.

“Apologize.”

Everyone else joined in.

“Yeah, hurry up and say sorry.”

“You made Zach upset, and now Jade has to fix it. Was that really necessary?”

I gave a cold laugh but did not say a word.

I looked at my phone. There were three hours left before my flight.

Everyone was staring at me as I stood up.

“I’ve got something to do. I’m leaving.”

Jade chased after me. Just as I opened the car door, she stepped in front of me.

“Ivan, were you just trying to cause trouble tonight?

“Now look, everyone’s upset.”

She grabbed my hand and tried to pull me back.

“Come with me and say sorry. If you don’t, I won’t take you to meet my parents tomorrow.”

I shook her off and said coldly, “Why should I?

“They said all those awful things. Why didn’t you ask them to apologize to me?”

Jade frowned. She was clearly annoyed. “They were just joking. If you don’t like it, we’ll be more careful next time.”

At that point, she was still taking their side.

“Forget it. Go pack our stuff. We’re leaving tomorrow afternoon.”

I replied, “Okay.”

She looked relieved.

“Pick me up later. I’ll call you.”

I held the plane ticket in my pocket, smiled, and nodded.

Seeing that I was not angry anymore, she ran back to the group.

Once I saw her sit down again, I got in the car and drove straight to the airport.

I stared at her number for a while. Then, I blocked and deleted it.

She stayed in Southern City while I went to Northern City.

From that day on, we were done.

After I got back to Southern City, the first person who showed up was Jade’s friend, Rachel Zimmerman.“Can you please go see her?“She hasn’t been eating, and now she has cancer.“The doctor said she doesn’t have much time left.”I just smiled and said, “If she’s sick, she should see a doctor.”Rachel looked upset but did not argue.“At least go for old times’ sake. “She still thinks about you.”I was tired of hearing this and shut the door in her face.My grandma heard the noise and asked, “Was that Jade?”I got curious and asked, “Has she been here?”Grandma replied, “Yes, she’s come a lot.”She pulled me aside and told me more. When I left, Jade came to see my grandma. She first called, then came to the house in person and begged for my address. My grandma refused and even chased her away with a broom.Jade took several hits from my grandma’s broom. She cried but did not move or try to defend herself.“I just want to know where he is.”My grandma did not know wha

When I got home, I quickly took off my clothes and tossed them into the washing machine. Then, I went straight to take a shower. The friend who tricked me into meeting Jade sent me a message. [So… did you two make up?]I replied. [Get lost.]Then, I sent another message. [If you help her meet me again, you can stay away too.]He did not seem to care and kept asking what had happened between us all these years.I thought about it and just said, “I was basically her unpaid servant.”He was angry for me. “She’s gone too far!“Sorry, man. I won’t be that dumb again.“If that’s what love looks like, even a dog wouldn’t want it!”I rubbed my forehead and gave a bitter smile.I was that dog back then. The next day, Wendy came to tell me about the meeting schedule. I nodded, already aware of it.But when I walked into the meeting room, I saw Jade sitting there.I was surprised. So she had not lied. She really did a good job on her recent project. Otherwise, she would not have had

Jade got a little panicked. She quickly stood up and ran after me.She followed me and kept saying sorry. She said she was only here on a work trip and would leave soon. She also said she just wanted to see me.I was annoyed but finally agreed to take a walk with her outside.Speaking of which, I had not really walked around Northern City since I got here.Outside the restaurant was a busy street with lots of people.Jade suddenly took out her phone and tried to take a selfie with me.I tried to move away.Click.But it was too late. She showed me the photo.“We look good, right?”I just looked at it without caring much.Jade continued, “This is our first photo together.”Then, she stopped. I sneered. So she knew too.We had been together for ten years, and I often thought about taking a couple’s photoshoot with her.But Jade always came out with different reasons and said no.She said she was busy or that the photos would look bad.But she still went on trips with

Meanwhile, things were going really well for me at work.Since I was new in town, it took a few months of dealing with the local government before I finally got the rights to a piece of land in the city center.I showed up at just the right time. Northern City was pushing for economic growth. So I decided to build a big supermarket on that land.Once I had the idea, I gave it to my team to design. That subordinate from before, Wendy Taylor, had become one of my most trusted team members. At lunchtime, she came in with my food right on time.“Mr. Young, time to eat.” I nodded for her to put it down. But then I noticed she was also holding a big bouquet of flowers.I was not happy.“Is this for me too?”Wendy looked a little troubled and explained, “A woman forced me to give it to you. She said it’s really important, and you have to read it.”I did not know anyone important, so I waved my hand to tell her to throw them out. Then, Wendy added, “Her name is Jade Oakley.”My

Jade’s whole body went weak, and she fell to the floor by the balcony door.Thinking back, all the signs were there. She had taken my love for granted and kept hurting me.Even that evening, she had kissed another guy right in front of me.When she realized I was really gone, she started crying loudly. She cried until she was too tired and fell asleep on the floor. The next morning, a phone call woke her up.Still half-asleep, she answered it.It was her parents.“Jade, when are you bringing him home to meet us?”Jade felt like crying again.“Mom, we have no more future together.“He went to Northern City and said he’s never coming back.”Her mom did not seem surprised. She sighed and said, “I warned you before. Don’t get too close to guys who aren’t dependable. Now look at what happened.“Since it’s over, don’t try to chase him. Just focus on your job.“He’s finally living his own life.”Jade’s eyes filled with tears. She felt even worse.“So you knew he would leave m

After I finished everything, I opened the window and let the cold wind come in.I took a deep breath and felt a sense of freedom and relief. At the airport, I took out my SIM card and threw it in the trash.“Get lost.”When Zach brought Jade home, she was still drunk. The lights were off in the house. Even though it was empty, Jade did not notice.Zach had to search around for a while before he turned the lights on.He put Jade on the couch and quietly asked, “Jade, where’s your kitchen?”Jade did not hear him. She mumbled, “Ivan, bring me some water.”No one answered. She felt strange and a little scared for no reason.Zach complained, “Why is Ivan like this? He didn’t wait for you and went to sleep.“Don’t look for him. I’ll get the water.”Zach stood up and started looking for the kitchen.Jade felt less nervous but more angry.“He’s gone too far,” she muttered. Her eyes were dull as she looked at the table.I used to put fresh flowers here every day, but it was em
