The top floor of this six-story building served as the quarters for the Alphas and Betas.

Kyle's room was on the east side, fitted with heavy blackout curtains.

I had personally picked them out for him back then because he was a light sleeper, easily awakened by the slightest glint of light.

The furniture was entirely done in the cold gray tones he preferred.

There wasn't a single plant in the hallway, as he was allergic to pollen.

It was only when I finished packing that I realized, after living here for three years, all of my belongings fit into just two suitcases—one for clothes and one for the old belongings Mom had left behind.

When Kyle rushed back, I was just loading the bags into my car.

"Where are you going?" he asked.

"Back to my own place."

"We just had a little argument. Is it really necessary to move out?"

Kyle looked like he hadn't slept well lately. His eye sockets were sunken, and his gaze was filled with exhaustion.

In the past, seeing him like this would have instantly softened my heart.

But this time, I felt nothing but a deep calm. "It's not just an argument. Our mate bond is dissolved."

Kyle stepped in front of me, blocking my path. "So you're using this tactic to force me to stop seeing Naomi altogether?"

He couldn't see my pain. No matter what I said, he simply chalked it up to me throwing a fit.

I looked straight at him. "Kyle, I'm serious."

He froze, then actually let out a dry laugh a few seconds later. "All because I was late for the bonding ceremony?"

"Yes."

"Stop talking out of anger."

"I'm not angry."

He reached out to take my wrist, but I took a step back, leaving his hand hanging in midair.

"I'm not angry because I simply don't want to be with you anymore," I calmly said.

The color drained from his face all at once, and his lips trembled. "That's impossible. We already registered with the Werewolf Council."

"We registered, but you never marked me, did you?"

"We can do it right now—"

"There's no need."

I looked up at him. "It's too late. There's no point anymore."

He lowered his head, rendered completely speechless.

"I used to think that as long as I endured it one more time, everything would be fine. I thought we were the ones meant to spend a lifetime together, that no matter what happened, I would always be your first choice when it came to major moments.

"But I was wrong. You would rather miss our bonding ceremony just to go to her."

"Naomi was—"

"You don't need to explain to me. I don't care about any of that anymore."

Kyle grabbed the handle of my suitcase. "Don't do this, Serafina. Give me one more chance, okay? You know I love you."

I pried his fingers off one by one.

"I've already filed a petition for a forced dissolution with the council. It takes effect in 30 days. Over these 30 days, our wolves will be torn apart piece by piece. It will be painful, and we'll both have to go through it. But once we endure that pain, it will all be over. You'll be free."

The car door shut in front of him.

This time, he was the one left waiting behind.
