Chapter 4

Author: Cecilia D
Zoe and I had been friends for twenty years. She was family, even if we didn't share blood.

I had lost Renata. I had lost Bruno. I wouldn't lose Zoe too.

By the pool, Bianca sat in a chair.

Silvio crouched beside her, gently giving her water.

Dozens of guards poured bottle after bottle of whiskey into the pool. The sharp smell of alcohol filled the air.

Empty bottles piled up beside the pool.

Zoe's hands were tied behind her, her mouth taped shut as two guards held her down.

"Zoe!"

I ran toward her, but the guards stopped me.

"Silvio, let her go!"

Silvio looked up and gave me a cold glance.

"Control yourself, Serafina."

"You know what Zoe means to me!"

"And?"

I knew I couldn't fight him right now. I forced my voice to soften.

"Let her go. Please."

Silvio's expression started to soften, but Bianca grabbed his hand, her eyes filling with tears.

"Don Silvio, let Miss Fontana go. I don't want the Donna to hate you for defending me."

Silvio's face darkened.

"Throw Zoe in."

I struggled with all my strength, but two guards pinned me down.

"Zoe has a severe alcohol allergy! She could die!"

"You must still be drunk."

Silvio gave me a cold look.

"Bianca is the one with the alcohol allergy."

"Bianca's faking it! Zoe's allergy is real!"

Silvio ignored me.

Zoe was thrown into the whiskey-filled pool with a huge splash.

I could only watch as her skin turned red and began to swell. Whiskey filled her nose and ears.

A choked sound escaped her throat. She couldn't even cough.

"What do you want me to do? I'll do anything!"

Silvio looked at Bianca.

"Put your foot out."

Confused, Bianca held out her left foot.

Silvio looked down at me.

"Kiss her shoe."

I stared at the leather boot in front of me, stunned.

He wanted me to kiss his mistress's shoe.

Bianca lifted her chin and tapped her boot against the ground.

I bit my lip and bent down.

Bianca laughed above me.

"Be a dear, Serafina. I'm counting on you to take good care of Stefano and me."

I closed my eyes and swore I'd never forget her face.

Silvio finally relented.

"Pull Zoe out."

By the time Zoe was dragged onto the tiles, she wasn't breathing.

I shoved the guards aside, dropped beside her, and cleared the whiskey from her mouth and nose.

"Zoe, wake up!"

She did not respond.

I placed both hands on her chest and started compressions.

One. Two. Three.

"Call an ambulance!"

Nobody moved.

I looked up and screamed, my voice raw, "If she dies here, the Fontana family will go to war with all of you!"

Lucas finally called emergency services.

I knelt on the cold ground, giving Zoe CPR.

By the time the paramedics arrived, my arms were completely numb.

Outside the emergency room, the doctor's words hit me hard.

"The patient went into anaphylactic shock and stopped breathing. Her brain went without oxygen for too long. Even if she survives, she may never wake up."

Through the glass, I watched Zoe lie motionless. Her blood was still on my hands.

Silvio stood at the end of the corridor. For the first time, panic flashed across his face.

"I didn't know she was really allergic."

"I told you more than once."

I looked at him.

Silvio argued, "Bianca lied to me."

"Bianca didn't make you do it. You ordered Zoe into that pool."

My voice was barely above a whisper. "Silvio, you just wanted to force me to bow to her."

The color drained from his face.

I didn't stay to hear his excuses. I called Dario.

"How much longer before the divorce is final?"

"The court has confirmed the signature is valid. The final ruling comes tomorrow. Your assets are frozen for protection. Twelve capos have already left with their men."

"Silvio can't execute you as a traitor now. You represent the Thorne family. The Marino and Fontana families are openly backing you. If he touches you, he'll start a war with all three families."

I stared at the closed emergency-room doors.

My voice came out rough. "Dario, I'll marry you."

My hands shook so badly that I tightened my grip on the phone.

Blood seeped from beneath my torn fingernail.

"But my terms have changed."

My voice had never sounded so cold.

"I want the Nelli family out of Sicily."

Three months later, Dario and I stood before the altar in the Thorne family church. In all that time, Dario had never pressured me to marry him. He'd never touched my money or challenged my authority either. When someone suggested putting my family businesses under the Marino name, Dario refused in front of everyone."Her family name, her power, and her property are hers alone."That was when I finally understood. He wanted to stand beside me, not control me.I chose our wedding date myself. The priest had barely finished asking Dario if he would take me as his wife before Dario answered, "I do.""Serafina Thorne, do you take..."Silvio's roar came from outside the church."She doesn't!"He stormed up the steps with what remained of the Nelli family behind him.The guests did not scream. Marino and Thorne gunmen already guarded every entrance. The shooting lasted less than a minute.None of Silvio's men made it inside. When the gunfire stopped, Silvio was the only one still moving. He

At the mountain estate, I found a receipt from the hospital where Stefano was born.A stranger had paid to store Stefano's cord blood.Dario quickly found out the man had been Bianca's lover for four years.Bianca had kept sending him money even after Stefano was born. She had used Stefano's status as the Nelli heir to secure her place in the family, while using Silvio's money to support the boy's real father."Paternity test?""Do it. Send the result to Silvio.""You know what he'll do when he sees it.""I'm only giving him the truth."Bianca had used Silvio's power to kill Bruno. Now I would take away the one thing protecting her.Silvio kept saying the child was innocent. But more than anything, he feared becoming a joke for raising another man's son.The child was innocent, so I had already arranged a nanny and a safe home for him. When the paternity test reached Silvio's hospital room, he had just woken up with a high fever. In the week since he lost his men, the Nelli family's wa

This was the Nelli family's secret mountain estate. My phone and jewelry were gone. Only the tracker sewn into my skirt was still working. After our engagement, Dario had ordered the tailor to put a tracker in every dress I owned.I had laughed at him for being paranoid. Now I was glad I'd let him."Zoe never went into cardiac arrest."Silvio did not deny it."You wouldn't give me a chance, so I had to invite you here."When he said "invite," he straightened my collar, deliberately avoiding the restraint marks on my wrists."You used Zoe to lure me here. Is this your idea of making things right?""Stay, and I'll explain everything to the Fontana family."He clapped his hands, and Bianca was dragged in, covered in bruises."You see? I avenged you.""You're the one who deserves the worst punishment."Silvio untied me and held out a dagger."You can punish me however you want. Just forgive me."He placed the handle in my hand, as if one stab could erase everything he'd done.Blood ran dow

I called a meeting at the Thorne estate. The capos sat around the table. Then Camillo, the Nelli family's most senior elder, stormed in with armed men."A piece of paper from a court means nothing. There is no divorce in the underworld. A Donna who betrays the family should be executed."When he finished, four gunmen blocked every exit. All twelve capos stood at once. The room went tense.Dario's bodyguards drew their weapons. I raised a hand to stop them."You can refuse to recognize the court. But you can't ignore the port agreements you signed."I spread three documents on the table. If I died or disappeared, the ports, bank guarantees and pharmaceutical supply lines would cut all ties with the Nelli family for good. The Marino family would hunt down whoever did it. The Fontana family would freeze the accounts of anyone who helped them. This was the protection I'd arranged while waiting at the estate for the divorce ruling.During those twenty-one days, they were busy humiliating me

Silvio searched the entire estate and found only a pale mark on the wall where our wedding portrait used to hang.None of my dresses were in the closet. None of the account books I kept were in the study. Even our photo by the bed was gone.Silvio opened every door, but there was nothing left to show I'd ever lived there."Where are her things?"A servant lowered his head. "Donna took what mattered to her. Miss Russo threw out the rest.""Who gave her permission to do that?""You did. You said Miss Russo was in charge of everything."Silvio froze. Then the Marino family delivered a gold plaque with two words engraved on it: HAPPY DIVORCE.The party guests were still there. Every one of them saw the insult.Under the plaque were the divorce agreement, his notarized signature, and the court decree.Silvio tore the documents to pieces."They're fake! I never agreed to a divorce!"Lucas picked up the page with Silvio's signature."She told you clearly at the christening. You were so sure s

The next morning, the East Coast Family Commission finalized our divorce. My family immediately froze the joint accounts I had funded, and three shipping lines stopped handling Nelli cargo. Those businesses were my dowry. After using them for ten years, Silvio had started treating them as his own. When the notice reached East Port, the Nelli men refused to leave the warehouse.Six months' worth of Nelli cargo was stored there. If shipments stopped, the family would lose a fortune every day.I went to the port myself.Marco, the capo there, blocked the gate with over twenty men. These men had once called me Donna. Now their hands rested on their weapons as they waited to see if I really dared turn against Silvio."Without an order from the Don, no one stops a Nelli shipment.""The land belongs to me. I bought the equipment and pay your wages."I handed him the property documents."From today on, if the Nelli family wants to use East Port, they'll pay rent."Marco refused to move."The D
