Chapter 5

Author: Explosion
The next afternoon, while Liam was away, Victoria barged into my room, claiming she wanted to disinfect my wounds.

Before I could stop her, she poured a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and table salt over the raw lash marks on my back. The liquid fizzed against my torn flesh, and I screamed in agony.

I tried to twist away, but the servants she'd brought with her pinned me face-down against the rug, leaving me unable to escape.

"I'm doing this for your own good," Victoria whispered, leaning close to my ear. "If you don't leave the Reed household, next time you'll face more than the family punishment."

Just then, a furious voice rang out from the doorway.

"You despicable creature!"

Liam's grandfather, Arthur Reed, had arrived unannounced. The moment he saw Victoria pouring the mixture over my wounds, his face darkened with rage.

"The Reed family will never accept a vicious woman like you! I'm telling Liam everything right now."

"You old fool! Don't you dare!"

Victoria rushed after him and instinctively shoved him with all her strength.

Arthur lost his balance and tumbled down the staircase. He hit the floor below and lay motionless.

At that very moment, Liam walked through the front door.

Victoria immediately rushed toward him, tears streaming down her face.

"Mathilde was still angry with you for enforcing the family rules, so she pushed your grandfather down the stairs! It's all my fault. I should have kept a closer eye on her."

"I didn't! It was her! She pushed him!"

Before I could finish defending myself, Liam strode over and slapped me across the face.

"Shut up!" he roared.

He then turned to the security guards behind him and ordered, "Take this insane woman to a psychiatric facility. Now!"

They dragged me away. I was thrown into a room, collapsing onto the floor like a discarded doll. My battered body hit the cold floor, and I barely had the strength to move.

A moment later, several female patients with hostile expressions entered the room. They surrounded me and began beating me, hurling insults as they kicked and punched me.

Some deliberately targeted the wounds on my back, tearing open the lash marks that had barely begun to heal. Before long, blood covered my clothes.

I closed my eyes, too exhausted to resist.

Perhaps this was simply my fate: to give my heart to the wrong man and suffer for it. If I could have one wish, it would be never to meet Liam again.

And never, ever to fall in love with him.

Just as my consciousness began to fade, I heard the steady rhythm of footsteps approaching from the hallway. The ward door burst open, and a team of security guards in black suits stormed inside.

Leading them was Elliot Coleman, the heir to the Coleman Group, whom I'd once happened to save. His expression remained calm, but his eyes sharpened when he saw me lying in a pool of blood.

Without wasting time on questions, he bent down, scooped my limp body into his arms, and carried me out.

For the first time in what felt like forever, someone had come to take me away from the nightmare.

...

By the time Liam arrived at the facility, the ward was empty.

The bed had been made, the window was shut, and I was nowhere to be found.

For a man who had always maintained perfect composure, he seemed unable to process what he was seeing. His carefully maintained calm shattered, replaced by unmistakable panic.

"Where is she?" he demanded. "Where did Mathilde go?"

He rushed out and searched the facility floor by floor, but no matter where he looked, there was no sign of me. Just as his frustration reached its peak, his phone rang.

"Mr. Reed, come to the hospital! Your grandfather has regained consciousness!"

The doctor slowly shook his head."There is no definitive answer. We can't say for certain whether he'll wake up, or when."All the strength drained from my body. I leaned heavily against the cold wall, struggling to keep myself upright.Did I hate Liam? Of course, I did.All the injuries and humiliation I'd endured over the years couldn't simply be erased by a casual apology. Yet as I thought of him lying comatose and battered in the hospital, a complicated mix of emotions still welled up inside me.With his congenital hyperalgesia, he must have experienced far more agony than an ordinary person would have endured throughout this ordeal.Perhaps never seeing each other again was the best ending for both of us....Elliot began pursuing me wholeheartedly. He told me he'd fallen in love with me the first time we met. But because I'd already given my heart to someone else back then, he'd kept his feelings to himself, quietly watching over me from a distance. His love was passio

Liam came to my classroom for his scheduled cleaning shift. While bending down to tidy up the clutter, he suddenly collapsed.I rushed him to the campus infirmary, where the doctor felt his burning forehead before carefully unwrapping the sweat-soaked, stained gauze covering his back. The moment I saw the wounds underneath, my fingertips trembled involuntarily. The burns were badly inflamed, with festering tissue and pus oozing from the damaged skin.It was hard to believe that the man lying before me was once the formidable CEO of the Reed Group, someone who had commanded entire boardrooms with ease. Now, he'd reduced himself to this state.Liam drifted in and out of consciousness. His chapped lips kept moving, repeatedly whispering my name in a low, raspy murmur.I didn't see him again for the next three months. The little coastal town was beautiful.Every evening, I took slow walks along the coastline. The sea breeze brushed against my hair, gradually carrying away the fatig

Elliot strode over to my side and cast a cold, impatient glance at Liam."Mr. Reed, this is the research wing of the institute. Please respect the rules and keep your distance. Mathilde doesn't want to see you, so leave immediately and stop disrupting her life."Elliot's immediate defense of me struck Liam like a sharp thorn, driving straight into his heart. He glared at Elliot, his eyes burning with resentment. "Who are you? What's your relationship with Mathilde?"Elliot remained unfazed, his voice detached but firm. "Who I am is none of your business. Now leave."Liam's eyes reddened with fury as he clenched his fists and lunged at Elliot.Elliot reacted instantly, sidestepping the attack before landing a hard punch squarely in Liam's face. Caught off guard, Liam crashed to the floor.Given his hypersensitivity to pain, I doubted he'd be able to get back up anytime soon....Even after that confrontation, Liam refused to leave the city.Instead, he applied for a job as a j

In five years, Liam had never sent me so many messages.[Mathilde, I know the truth now! Victoria is a complete fraud!][Mathilde, where are you? I've searched every corner of the psychiatric facility, but I can't find you anywhere.][Mathilde, please come back. If you do, we'll get married right away.]I stared at the texts and felt nothing but bitter irony. After everything I'd endured for him, he still thought marriage was the answer. Yet the promise I'd once sacrificed so much to fulfill meant nothing to me anymore.Elliot leaned over, caught a glimpse of my screen, and asked with a half-smile, "What's wrong? Having second thoughts?"Not answering, I removed the SIM card from my phone and tossed it into the ocean. At last, the world was quiet.Elliot smiled with amusement. "That works, too. I'll get you a new phone. Here's to your new life, Mathilde."Two years ago, I'd saved Elliot's life by pure chance. At the time, I hadn't known he was the successor to the world-renow

Liam rushed into the hospital's VIP suite, his designer suit wrinkled and disheveled from the frantic search. The moment he saw Arthur awake in bed, his knees nearly gave way. He dropped beside the bed, relief washing over his face."Grandpa, thank goodness you're awake!" He lowered his head, his voice heavy with guilt. "This is all my fault. I failed to keep Mathilde under control, and she acted impulsively and hurt you."I've already punished her severely. Please, don't pursue the matter any further. Forgive her just this once."Arthur stared at his grandson in disbelief, then muttered weakly, "You fool. Mathilde didn't push me."Liam paused. "What... What did you say?"Arthur sighed. "Victoria pushed me and blamed it on Mathilde. I saw her abusing Mathilde before it happened!"Liam froze, unable to process what he was hearing. Arthur took a shaky breath before revealing what he'd discovered."And there's something else. Victoria is an impostor. She's not the real heiress to
