Chapter 3

Penulis: Cheesie
When I used to ask whether he missed me, he'd say, "Lina, love is something you carry in your heart. It doesn't need to be said out loud all the time."

There was noise at the front door, and a small, piping voice rang through the house.

"Mamma! I'm home!"

The little boy came running in with his backpack still on and buried himself in Nora's arms. She bent and caught him and kissed his cheek.

"You're home, baby. Were you good at school today?"

He hung off her neck.

"Of course I was! They gave out chocolate pudding at school and I brought mine home for you!

"I know it's your favorite."

I stared at the red mole beside his right eye, and I couldn't stop shaking.

The same place, the same color, exactly as I had memorized it after the delivery, right before they closed the chamber.

This boy was plainly the child I had nearly killed myself to bring into the world.

And he called Nora "Mamma" so easily, so fondly, as though she were the woman who bore him.

The nanny took him upstairs to change out of his uniform. I wrestled with it for a long time before I could force the words out.

"He doesn't look much like you."

Nora sighed, and her face didn't change at all.

"The poor thing's had a hard start. His birth mother died right after she delivered him. Vito and I didn't want him growing up hurt by that, so we've always told people he's mine. He's been with me since before he can remember, and as far as he's concerned I'm the only mother he's ever had."

My fingers closed around the arm of the sofa until the knuckles went white.

My son didn't merely fail to recognize me. He had never been told a birth mother existed at all.

In seven years of memory, there was no such person as me.

Nora got up and headed for the kitchen.

"Stay put. I'll squeeze you some orange juice."

I noticed how clumsy she was with the knife. It took her ages of fiddling before the juicer finally started to hum.

She laughed at herself, a little embarrassed.

"I don't really do housework. We used to keep a chef, but I'm a picky eater, so Vito taught himself to cook. He does every meal now.

"He's honestly good at it. I'll make him show off later so you can try some."

Every word ground against something raw in my chest.

My stomach used to be bad. I'd wake before dawn with cramps. There were nights the pain sweated straight through my pillowcase, and I bore it in silence because I was afraid of waking Vito and ruining his next day at work.

For the years we were together I cooked him something different every day. I always thought his research wore him out, so I never let him near the kitchen, never let him take on a chore, and handled every last thing myself.

Three whole years, and I never even learned that he could cook.

I never tasted a single thing he made.

Nora brought the juice over and teased me as she handed it across.

"I always assumed a research type like Vito had to be rigid and dull. Then we got together and it turns out that when he decides to be romantic, he's lethal."

She took out her phone and scrolled her photos to show me.

In one of them Vito stood in a loud Hawaiian shirt under the neon of Coachella, glow stick up, laughing without a shred of restraint.

"Last year work was crushing me, so he dragged me out to California. He went wilder than I did."

She kept swiping, and a photo of their marriage certificate came up.

The date was March 15, seven years ago.

The third month after I was frozen.

That was when he married someone else.

Nora colored a little.

"It's a funny story, actually. We met through work. Vito came in for a magazine interview and I was shooting his cover.

"I'd just come out of a relationship, I was in a bad place, and I had no interest in dating anyone.

"He didn't care. He came by my studio every single day and told me it was love at first sight. We got married two months after we met."

Something enormous closed around my heart and squeezed until I could barely draw breath.

He had been chasing her while I was barely settled in the chamber.

The sweet talk, the reckless heat of the pursuit, all of it happened after I went under.

That beautiful picture he'd painted, the one where he and our child waited for me to open my eyes and we were a family again, had been a lie he laid down in advance.

"Vito. You falsified legal documents, you stole another man's research data, and you deceived this family. As of today you are expelled from the Lucchese family. Every title, every asset, and every research patent is stripped from you. From this day forward, no family in Sicily is to take you in. Get him out of my sight."Vito went slack on the floor and shouted himself hoarse. "No! Don Lucchese! Give me one more chance. I can still put it right—"The Don didn't so much as turn his head."I don't extend trust to a man whose mouth is full of lies."Ricardo. You'll handle the aftermath. Whatever your sister has lost is to be compensated first, out of Vito's assets."Ricardo nodded. "Understood."After the Don left, all that remained in the corridor was Vito kneeling with his back to us and the white of Nora's face.Nora looked at me and her lips moved, but in the end she said nothing.Sullivan, in her arms, had been badly frightened by all of it, and he pressed into her shoulder

Don Lucchese had come in person. Everyone who saw him backed out into the corridor at once and didn't dare lift their heads.I met his eyes. His features were sharp, an old man of seventy, leaning on an ebony cane, with two personal guards behind him.He nodded at me, took in the room, and his face went livid. Then he looked at Ricardo."Ricardo. You asked me to come. What is this about?"I looked at my brother, not following. He patted my shoulder to tell me it was all right, then inclined his head slightly toward the Don."The core research data behind Vito's cryonics technology was, in large part, lifted from an unpublished paper I wrote ten years ago."My head snapped around to him.He sighed. "Lina. Are you still going to cover for him?"Vito was out in the corridor, held down on his knees. The moment he heard, he lunged in and grabbed my hand."No, Lina, you can't. You know what I've put into this. If you say it, all of it is destroyed."Think about our son. He's so you

The next morning the nurses looked at me differently. There was contempt in it, and disgust.I was still trying to work out why when the door to my room was shoved open.A crowd came in with phones up. From the look of them they were enforcers and low-level associates, the bottom rung of the family."That's her!""Lina, you're the bitch who goes after other women's husbands?"The phone lenses were nearly against my face and the flashes were bright enough that I couldn't keep my eyes open.I shrank back on instinct, and a hand caught my arm and dragged me forward again."Don't run off. Let us get a look at you.""Seven years frozen, did it freeze your brain? Want us to help you sober up?"I had no idea why these people had come pouring in and nothing prepared for it. Between the lenses and the noise my mind went blank. I shut my eyes and curled into the corner of the bed, and every ounce of fight went out of me.Then the door was kicked in and a man's roar went off in the room

Nora stood in the doorway with a face like weather coming in."Mr. Ferraro has gone."She walked in, holding her temper down."He thinks a great deal of Vito. If you're the reason things go wrong from here, I won't let it go easily."I pushed myself upright and looked at her.Her voice went hard."So tell me now. What exactly is between you and my husband?"I looked into her eyes. There was suspicion in them, and wariness, and a thread of fear she couldn't quite bury. She was afraid. Afraid that a woman who had come out of nowhere would break apart seven years of settled happiness.I answered to provoke her. "Why don't you ask him? Whatever he says must be the truth."Nora's face went colder still."He says the two of you separated on good terms before you ever entered that chamber."My body jerked. "What?""Don't put on an act." Nora smiled without warmth. "He said the marriage was never public and you never completed any formal registration. He said after you were diagno

Vito didn't say anything. He just looked at me.I understood what he meant. He wanted me gone. He wanted me to disappear, to never turn up in front of his new family again."I'm not leaving."Vito, I'm not letting this go."His eyes darkened at once."What is it you actually want? You want me to divorce her and marry you? You want Sullivan to call you Mamma?"I didn't answer. His hand slowly closed into a fist."Or do you want to make that other matter public?"Lina, listen to me. If that gets out, it doesn't help anyone. With the resources and influence I have now, I can give Sullivan the best schooling and the best life there is. If it comes out, all of it is gone."He looked me over."Look at the state of you. You can't take care of him, and he won't accept you either. Could you really stand to watch him live poor and miserable?"The words went in like a knife.Sullivan seemed to sense that his father's tone had changed, and he twisted down out of Vito's arms. He ran at

His tone went soft. He took a step toward me."I know I've wronged you in this. But it's already happened. Can't you let me have it?"I looked at the face I had once loved and found it frightening in how unfamiliar it was."Let you have it?"He dropped his voice."Nora doesn't know any of it. Not about us, and not that you're Sullivan's birth mother. But Sullivan has treated her as his real mother his entire life. He's seven. How do you expect him to take a change like that? Could you really stand to break his happiness apart?"My hands shook and I couldn't stop them."I'll make it up to you," he went on. "I can give you money. I can arrange somewhere for you to live. You can start over completely. You were a racer before any of this. You'd do perfectly well without me. But Nora and Sullivan can't get by without me."Something in that made me laugh, and while I was laughing the tears came up."Vito, do you know why I agreed to get into that chamber?"He said nothing.I came
