Chapter 3

Autor: Honeyed Habit
Zach gripped my shoulders, his tone softening.

"I'll make this up to you. You're a designer. Coming up with another design shouldn't be that hard for you.

"Come on, enough. I admit I handled the wedding badly. Zoe suddenly decided she wanted to know what it felt like to have one, and I couldn't exactly refuse her. I figured I could get away with keeping it from you. We can always have ours another day."

We had been together for five years. After five years together, we'd even had our charts read, and both families had helped us settle on what was supposed to be the perfect wedding date. Yet he had thrown it all aside that easily for a reason like that.

With that, he left.

My parents were still outside, so I swallowed the bitterness and forced myself to set the whole thing aside for the moment.

When I reached the restaurant, the last person I expected to see was Zach.

He and Zoe were in a corner of the hallway, and I couldn't tell what they were doing. Zach stood protectively beside her as he asked in a gentle voice, "What's wrong? Who was picking on you?"

I had no interest in dealing with either of them and was about to leave when I heard a familiar voice.

My niece, Mia Miller.

I hurried over and found Zach holding onto her, refusing to let her go. His grip was so tight that her little hand had turned red. She was only six, and she was frightened enough that tears kept spilling down her cheeks.

"I didn't say anything bad about her," she cried. "She was the one saying mean things about Aunt Wendy first."

Zach snapped at her, "Who taught you to talk like that? Did you call Zoe shameless and say she did something dirty for a living? You can't just say things like that about people. Apologize!"

I shoved him away and pulled my niece into my arms.

"Zach Lewis, what the hell are you doing?" I hurried over.

I asked my niece several times what had happened, and every time she insisted she had never said any of those things. All she had done was tell Zoe not to say bad things about me.

I knew how our family had raised her, and I knew what kind of child she was. My heart ached at the thought of a six-year-old being dragged into this mess.

My parents and brother had noticed she'd been gone to the bathroom for a long time and came looking for her. The second my brother saw Zach, his temper flared.

"Today was supposed to be my sister's wedding, and you still haven't given her an explanation for what you did. Now you're accusing my daughter too? I believe my daughter. If you don't, check the security footage."

Zach showed no remorse whatsoever.

"That's a separate issue."

He still insisted that my niece apologize.

We all had someone we chose to believe. Just as Zach accepted Zoe's version without question, we believed my niece.

My parents were furious too.

"She's not apologizing. Our family has some pride, too! You ignored us and dragged the wedding out for half the day, then helped yourselves to my liquor so you could have your fun."

Of course my family had seen everything that had been posted online. They had been so angry that they'd spent a long while at the restaurant just trying to calm down.

Zach didn't bother denying any of it. Instead, he gave them a polished, self-justifying explanation.

Zoe's eyes grew even redder.

After a long silence, Zach finally said, "Don't push me. The title transfer on that house isn't finished yet. I can still put it in someone else's name."

I stared at him in disbelief.

That house had been my parents' old family home, a small villa that meant more to all of us than I could put into words. Calling it an emotional anchor for our family wouldn't have been an exaggeration.

Three years ago, Zach's business had run into trouble and desperately needed cash. I had been the one to take him to my parents and ask for help.

At the time, there happened to be a buyer willing to pay cash and close quickly, making him the best option. My parents trusted Zach and wanted to help him through the crisis, so they sold the house and gave him the money he needed.

Back then, Zach had dropped to his knees and sworn, "I promise you, I'll buy the house back."

He then went to the buyer and signed a separate agreement. As long as the house was kept intact and the buyer didn't move in for three years, Zach would repurchase it at three times the market price once those three years were up.

The buyer had originally intended to live there himself, but in the end, he decided the deal was worth the gamble and agreed.

For the next three years, someone regularly cleaned and maintained the house so it would remain exactly as it was.

I stayed by Zach through those three grueling years, and we finally made it through. Once he was back on his feet, the first thing he did was buy the house back.

My parents had been deeply relieved. They thought they had been right to trust him.

And now, with the paperwork still unfinished, Zach was holding that very house over our heads, knowing exactly how much it meant to my family.

After that, Zach finally stopped showing up to bother me. His company was in enough trouble to consume all his attention."How the hell did this happen?" he snapped as one problem after another surfaced.Once again, he needed money, only this time the shortfall was far larger than before. To make matters worse, the house he owned was legally in Zoe's name. When Zoe had first moved to the city, she'd had trouble establishing residency, so Zach had temporarily put the house in her name to help her. Now that he desperately needed an asset he could borrow against, he discovered he effectively had nothing. He didn't want anything more to do with Zoe, but desperation left him no choice."Transfer my house back to me."Zoe refused."You put it in my name. That makes it mine. I can do whatever I want with it, so don't act like I'm supposed to 'give it back.'"Zach was furious. "I never gave you that house. I put it in your name to help with your residency. We agreed you'd transfer it back afte

Wendy's POVOne morning, just as I was leaving for work, I found Zach waiting outside the house. The moment he saw me, he came over. "Wendy, I've been waiting a long time."I had no idea what he wanted, but seeing him first thing in the morning was enough to ruin my mood."If you have something to say, say it and leave. Mia's going to come out for school soon, and I don't want her seeing you."The coldness in my voice clearly stung him."Wendy, do you really have to treat me like this? I came to apologize. "I checked what happened that day. I was too worked up and handled it badly. Whatever Mia needs from me to make this right, I'll do it."I found the whole thing exhausting. When I tried to walk past him, Zach stepped in front of me."Are you seriously going to break up with me over all of this?"But it wasn't just "all of this."He had delayed my wedding again and again for Zoe, without caring what it did to me. He had believed Zoe without giving Mia even the smallest benefit of the

The more Zach replayed everything in his head, the more he regretted what he'd done, and the incident at the restaurant was no exception.Zoe had been the one to call him over that day. He hadn't thought much of it until he arrived and found her arguing with Mia. Without stopping to question what had happened, he'd taken Zoe's side and demanded an apology.Looking back, he knew better. He hadn't been around for Mia's entire childhood, but he'd known her for years and had a good sense of what kind of kid she was. He should have heard her out. At the very least, he should have checked the security footage before deciding she was guilty and using the house to force her family into submission. What bothered him most was the look on Wendy's father, Thomas Miller's, face that day. Thomas had spent his life as a proud, dignified teacher, and that small villa was the only old family home they had left. Zach had pushed him so far that he'd barely been able to speak, fumbling for his medicine

Third-person POVAt the restaurant, Zach sat staring at the grey tick beside his message. He'd reserved a table for the two of them and even brought along a new wedding plan. In his mind, things were finally starting to get back on track. It wasn't as though he'd deliberately skipped the property transfer, either. He'd known it was the most natural excuse he had to see Wendy again, and he'd wanted to find out what she'd been doing all this time.During this time, he was constantly checking his phone. There was always this strange emptiness whenever he looked at the screen and found nothing from her. Every time a notification came through, he'd grab his phone immediately, only to discover that it was Zoe again. And Zoe never seemed to contact him about anything important. Somehow, though, every little problem she brought him ended up taking a ridiculous amount of his time and energy to sort out.Gradually, it had started getting on his nerves. He wasn't indulging her every request the w

The way Mia addressed him caught Zach off guard. He stared at her for a second, then turned on me."Wendy, seriously? Whatever's going on between us, did you really have to involve a child?"There it was. Even now, he didn't think he'd done anything wrong. He had taken Zoe's word without question over that of a little girl he'd known for years, and he hadn't even been willing to check the security footage to give Mia a chance to prove herself. There was no point arguing with someone like that.I sent Mia back to her room before facing him again. "That was her decision, Zach. She gets to choose who she wants to be close to. I'm not going to tell her how she has to feel about you.""Fine. Fine." His jaw tightened. "I was trying to teach her a lesson, and now your whole family wants to act like I'm some kind of enemy?"The sheer nerve of it almost made me laugh."Mia has parents. She has grandparents. She has me, her aunt. She has plenty of family to teach her right from wrong. She doesn'

All of this, just so Zoe could get an apology. My eyes burned, tears threatening to spill over. "Zach, you're taking this too far."His tone softened slightly. "One apology and this is over, Wendy. You can't protect her from everything. When a kid does something wrong, you need to correct it right away."Mia started crying even harder. She clutched at my clothes, completely lost."Aunt Wendy, did I get everyone in trouble? Why is Uncle Zach doing this?"Just three days ago, Zach had won her over with a stuffed animal, coaxing her into calling him "Uncle Zach" until it had started coming naturally. Now he was treating her like she meant nothing to him.Zoe put on a show of being generous. "Forget it. I'm not going to hold a grudge against a child. It just hurts. No one's ever said anything like that about me before."Zach immediately took her side."If someone does something wrong, they should apologize. I'm not going to let you swallow an insult you don't deserve."The words cut straig
