Chapter 3

Author: Glass Hovercar
The next morning, I was jolted awake by my phone vibrating.

The photos I sent had been shared multiple times and eventually reached the design firm's internal group chat.

Before I could even read the messages, an administrator deleted them all.

I opened the list of administrators. There was only one administrator, and it was Ian.

The next second, my phone rang.

"Julianna, are you done yet?

"Just because I was a little stern with you before I left yesterday, you're going to retaliate like this?"

Ian sounded exhausted. He'd probably been smoking all night.

I gathered myself.

"I don't have the energy to retaliate against you, and I'm not in the mood either.

"Ian, I was simply stating a fact.

"How other people choose to perceive it and talk about it is beyond my control."

There was a long silence on the other end. Just as I was about to lose patience, Ian finally spoke.

"Julianna, I know you've been holding a grudge for the past three years.

"Don't worry. I'll start planning the design for our marital home in the next few days.

"But before that–"

A trace of unmistakable authority entered his voice.

"You need to apologize publicly in the group and explain that you were only joking around with me.

"After all, Tina and I are jointly responsible for the design of our marital home. Your behavior has seriously damaged Tina's reputation."

A lighter clicked on from the other end of the call. There was an inexplicable hint of amusement in Ian's voice.

"Don't worry. As soon as you apologize, I'll immediately respond in the group and forgive you.

"Julianna, I won't let you embarrass yourself in front of everyone."

I couldn't help but chuckle.

This was the man who had made countless promises to give me a warm home.

"Ian, I'm not the one who should apologize.

"There's no need to design this house anymore. Let's get a divorce."

With that, I hung up and immediately contacted the project coordinator at the design firm.

"Hello. Due to a change in circumstances, I'd like to terminate the design project for this house.

"Ms. Warren, are you sure? According to our policy, the deposit is non-refundable once the project has been terminated."

The coordinator was clearly surprised and added, "You've been following up on the planning of this project for the past three years. Our records show that you've visited the firm nearly sixty times.

"The project has already begun, and the designers responsible for it are two of the most accomplished designers at our firm."

"Keep the deposit. Terminate the project," I interrupted softly. "Three years. Nearly sixty follow-ups, and I still never got a response. There's no reason for this project to continue."

The coordinator paused before finally giving up on trying to persuade me.

The moment the call ended, a loud crash came from the front door.

Ian slammed it shut. He then stormed into the bedroom and yanked me to my feet.

"Julianna, are you done yet?

"You refused to apologize, and now you're trying to use divorce to threaten me?"

His fingers clamped tightly around my shoulders, almost crushing my bones.

"Do you know what everyone at the firm is saying now? Tina cried all night because of this.

"You just had to cause trouble on the day she was moving into her new home. You know exactly what you're trying to accomplish!"

His grip made my shoulders ache and go numb. Compared to the pain of the uterine scraping, however, it barely registered.

I clenched my jaw, pried his fingers away, and pulled out a divorce agreement.

"This isn't a threat.

"Ian, I've really decided to divorce you."

His expression froze.

"When did you prepare these documents?"

I didn't answer, but I remembered it clearly.

The day my final attempt to move forward with the design of our marital home failed, I walked out of the design firm and, with trembling hands, contacted a lawyer to draft the divorce agreement.

I had kept it all this time partly because I wanted to give myself time to calm down.

But more than that, I had been waiting for a response from Ian.

Instead, he had immediately gone to help Tina oversee construction and was completely indifferent to my miscarriage.

When I didn't respond, Ian softened his tone.

"Julianna, don't use divorce to throw a tantrum.

"I've already started working on the design plans for our home. This time, I won't make you wait.

"Tina is coming over later to do an on-site assessment. Just apologize to her in the group and make her feel better."

As soon as he finished speaking, a sweet voice came from outside the door.

A month later, I returned to South City.It wasn't because I missed it, and it wasn't because I had softened my resolve. The mandatory cooling-off period for our divorce had ended, and I could finally go to the courthouse to sort out the paperwork. When I saw Ian again, I felt even calmer than before. It was as if I were dealing with a business associate preparing to negotiate a transaction with me. There were no feelings left, only interests. As far as I was concerned, ending this marriage was the most beneficial decision I could make at that point.Ian, by contrast, looked extremely anxious. He lingered outside the courthouse for a long time. Although strong winds were blowing outside, he showed no intention of stepping through the door."Ms. Warren, if your husband refuses to cooperate, you'll have to postpone receiving your divorce certificate."The staff member urged him repeatedly. It wasn't until his fifth failed attempt to light a cigarette that Ian finally took heavy

Back when I worked at the design firm, I wasn't allowed to enter or leave Ian's office whenever I wanted. The excuse was that married couples needed to avoid raising any suspicion. This was despite the fact that the design firm had no such unwritten rule.To avoid suspicion, I had to deliberately take detours whenever I saw him at work.During lunch, I couldn't even sit beside him. I could only watch from a distance as he laughed and chatted with Tina. After work, I could only wait for him at the security booth so we could go home together.Still, I never once managed to do so.My coworkers praised me for respecting his boundaries, and Ian was more than happy with the arrangement.Only I knew that I had been forced to tolerate three years of Ian's cold shoulder."Ian, do you not understand plain English?"I gathered myself and spoke expressionlessly."I told you to leave. I didn't ask you to tempt me with these conditions that no longer mean anything to me and coax me into c

The moment Tina saw Ian, tears began streaming down her face."Ian, I just panicked–"Ian had no patience to let her finish. He turned around and carefully checked me from head to toe.Only after confirming that I wasn't hurt did he finally let out a sigh of relief."Julianna, you just went through a miscarriage. You need to take better care of yourself."He forced a smile and tried to take my hand."I've already booked our tickets back to South City. Once we're back, we'll stay at the apartment provided by the design firm. I've hired a live-in caregiver for you. She'll be able to take good care of you."Just tell me what you want to eat. I'll learn how to make it."I've also restarted the renovation project for our marital home. Construction has already begun."He paused and retrieved a neatly folded blueprint from his suit pocket."Every detail has been designed according to the things you mentioned before. The nursery and guest room will remain as you originally intended."

Autumn came early to North City. When I arrived, Ivy was already waiting at the exit."Julianna, darling! Congratulations on leaving your heartbreak behind and starting a new life in North City!"She wrapped an arm around my shoulders and helped push my luggage."Oh, I'm honestly happier than anyone that you finally came to your senses."Did you tell Ian before you left?"I adjusted my scarf and shook my head. I then nodded."I left the divorce agreement, the diagnosis report, and the uterine scraping record on the table."There was nothing else worth saying to him."Ivy laughed cheerfully and didn't bring up Ian again.Even after I blocked Ian, calls from South City kept coming in.I ignored every single one of them. The training program soon began. On the first day, Lucy Crane, the staff member in charge of coordinating the program, smiled and shook my hand."Ms. Warren, you're the only person admitted to this program from a completely different professional background.

For the next three days, Ian never returned to our house. He delegated all the construction matters to an intern at the design firm and continued overseeing the construction at Tina's new home himself.Life seemed to return to its usual routine. If there was one noticeable difference, it was that I no longer kept urging him to come home.At first, one reason Ian had kept delaying the renovation of our marital home was that I wasn't pregnant yet, and we hadn't fully decided on the design of the nursery. But the biggest reason was that he didn't want to let a house hold him back.As long as the house remained unfinished, it could never really be considered a home.He didn't have to return at a fixed time every day. He could spend the night at the design firm's office, in the small apartment near the firm, or even at Tina's new house.Ian stared at his silent phone screen and suddenly realized something he had never fully acknowledged before. He hadn't considered any place where I

"Julianna! I'm here to help you with the assessment for soft furnishings!"The moment Tina stepped inside, she naturally looped her arm through Ian's. Her gaze landed on the documents nearby, and she paused."Julianna, are you going to divorce Ian?"I ignored her question and looked sternly at the keys in her hand.A safety charm I had given Ian was hanging from them."How do you have the keys to my house?"Tina's face went pale, and her eyes immediately welled with tears."Julianna, are you still angry because Ian went to oversee the construction at my place instead of coming home to keep you company?"I'm sorry. Please don't let me cause any disagreements between you and Ian–""Tina, this isn't your fault. You don't need to apologize to her."Ian rubbed his brows and gently sheltered Tina behind him."Julianna, you're not a three-year-old anymore. There should be a limit to throwing a tantrum."Tina is your designer for soft furnishings. She needs the house keys so she ca
