LOGINCHAPTER FORTY-TWO: THE ATTENTION HE WANTED 2Logan stared after them, his chest tightening as he watched them walk away. Just as he was about opening his mouth to really calm him this time, Sophie pulled away from him. "Logan?"He blinked. "Yeah?"She frowned. "You haven't paid attention to me." She tilted her head. “Is everything okay? Since… last night, you've just been… different.”Logan grabbed her hand and pulled her back slightly before shoving his hands deep into his pockets. "I am fine," he said simply. "Are you sure?" Sophie asked, not ready to let her worry go. "Yeah."Sophie looked at him for a second and smiled. "We'll meet underneath the bleachers before you practice."Logan looked at her. "Why?""Because I said so." Sophie leaned in, standing on her toe as she whispered into his ear. "I have something… nice planned for you." Logan closed his eyes, already exhausted knowing what her ‘plan’ was going to be. "Sophie–" "I will be there, waiting," she said as she patted h
WHAT THE RAIN COULDN'T WASH AWAYLogan's shirt was already soaked by the time he got to the end of the street, but he continued to walk without slowing down. Neither did he bother with his hood. The rain felt surprisingly fresh and exhilarating like the only spot on Earth where one could feel everything so clear. He could feel water pouring down on his neck and through the collar of his shirt, he could feel his shoes splashing on the wet road, but none of that seemed important to him now. He had to move; he needed to be anywhere but that room and that bed where Sophie had lain. The streetlights above flashed in the pouring rain, their light shining on the wet asphalt in bright orange lines. Logan kept walking, his hands in the pockets of his jacket, his breath barely noticeable against the warm air of summer. He took out the crumpled cigarette package which he'd hidden there earlier, only two cigarettes left. He picked one up with his wet fingers and put it into his mouth, rummaging i

THE ATTENTION HE WANTED 1 The air that morning was colder than Logan expected it to be. He stepped out of the black SUV and put his backpack on his shoulder, gazing at the school building he was familiar with. Its glass entrance reflected the pale sun rays, while the students crowded the passage in groups of two or three, holding coffee cups or laughing out loud on their way to their classes. Lucas approached him and closed the car door. None of them said a word. They’d hardly communicated since the previous night, and, strangely enough, Logan preferred it that way. After all, he had no idea what his brother was going to say to him. Whatever he had in mind was the last thing he wanted to listen to at this time in the morning. So the silence was the best option they had. The brothers went along the sidewalk silently and their footsteps fell almost simultaneously on its concrete surface, but none of them turned their eyes to the other. Logan cast a glance at Lucas. He was wearing
THE PRICE OF PRIDE Logan was cold, but it was not the regular kind that'd made one grab a blanket or complain about the weather. It was a cold that seemed to seep deeply into one's bones. He sat at the very edge of his bed, dressed in the same clothes he wore while walking home. The sweatshirt was drenched in water and hung heavy on his arms and shoulders. His jeans were the same, tight and heavy against his legs. He hadn't even bothered to turn the light on. The curtains were wide open and the only source of light in the room was the dim light of the street and flashes of the lightning from outside. Logan stared out the window, his eyes fixated on the driveway. A black car was parked there–his parents' car. They were home a day earlier than planned. And the first thing they saw upon reaching home were rows of the police cars stationed in front of their house. His stomach twisted. There were several officers standing close to the front entrance, their uniformed figures dark under
WHAT THE RAIN COULDN'T WASH AWAY Logan was already soaked to the skin by the time he got to the end of the street. His shirt sweatshirt to his body, his hair blocked most of his vision, and he shivered like hell, but he didn't slow down. He didn't even bother pulling up his hood. Something about the way the cool wind brushed over the tip of his nose put him at ease. It brought on him a kind of clarity he hadn't been able to find anywhere else that night. “Shit," he cursed with a shudder as he felt beads of water trickle down his neck and beneath his collar. His shoes squelched against the pavement with every step and the sound seemed to drive away most of his thoughts. Most of it. "Stop, Logan,” Logan grunted to himself as he smacked his face. "Focus.” It was better to be here in the cold, away from that house, that room, that bed where he'd fucked Sophie without a single ounce of emotion. With a soft sigh, he looked up at the streetlights flickering against the downpour. T
