Raine Ashford

The second my shoes hit the academy hallway, I knew I was screwed. You’d think I stepped into some kinda movie scene where the unpopular girl shows up to prom wearing a trash bag, because that’s the level of attention I was getting. Heads whipped, and jaws dropped.

I kept my chin up, clenching my jaw so hard. Nope, not today. I wasn’t about to let these wicked-faced assholes watch me break down. I could feel the burn behind my eyes, but hell no. No tears. Not for them. Not for anyone.

“Isn’t she the chick who fainted?” some giggly girl whispered, and I swear she wanted me to hear that loud and clear.

“She’s the one,” another voice chimed in. “Tried to seduce Alpha Jason, but got rejected.” Then came the laughter… sharp, loud, and right in my damn face.

I keep walking. My chest feels like someone shoved a dagger in and twisted it for fun, but I keep moving, pretending like their voices don’t faze me at all.

“Raine!”

Matt’s voice finally broke through the noise, pulling me out of my thoughts. He stood by my locker, all wide-eyed and concerned, with Lana hovering next to him, looking equally worried. Judging from their looks, I figured they’d been trying to mind-link me all damn week…. but I was too weak and broken to speak to them.

Lana wasted no time yanking me into a hug the second I got close enough.

“I’m so sorry, Raine. You don’t deserve this bullshit,” she whispered, rubbing my back so slow it made me want to ugly-cry right there in the hallway.

I blinked hard, swallowing the lump bubbling up my throat. The tears threatened, but I held them hostage. I wasn’t giving the audience what they wanted.

When she let go, Matt was already there, arms open, and I didn’t even think twice before falling into his hug.

“You okay, babe?” he asked softly.

I sniff, pulling back just enough to meet his eyes. “Yeah… I’m fine now. ”

Matt frowns. “You deserve way more than mating to an Alpha Asshole. You’re strong, smart, and badass as hell, Raine…you deserve a better mate.”

“No, guys.” I sniffled, wiping at my cheek with the back of my sleeve, “I did not accept the rejection.”

“What?!” Lana and Matt said at the same time, glancing at each other quickly..

I let out a dry laugh, my stomach twisting just thinking about what Alpha Ken told me. His painful threats… that arrogant smirk. I can’t even tell my friends…he made it clear I’m not allowed to say a word.

“Did your parents force you to do this, Raine?” Matt sighed, running a hand through his dark hair like he wanted to rip it out. “Raine. I don't believe you will accept Alpha Jason. You have always been different from other girls.”

“I don’t know what the hell I’m supposed to do. Raven’s gone quiet. I can’t feel her. I don’t even know if she’s still there. She can not take more hurt.”

My voice cracks, and this time I can’t stop the tears from falling. I didn't know how to explain this to my two closest friends. This was the best lie I could come up with.

“Hey, hey,” Lana coos, cupping my shoulder. “She’s hurt, okay? But she’ll come back. She’s your wolf, Raine. Just give her time.”

I nod, barely hearing her. I just want my wolf to stop feeling so damn down.

I reached for my locker, ready to grab my books, but the second I opened it….a blue liquid shot out, splashing straight across my face. It soaked through my skin, dripping down my neck and into my white T-shirt.

The hallway exploded with laughter. I blinked through the stinging mess, trying to wipe it out of my eyes, but it only made things worse.

“What the fuck…Raine, you okay?” Matt rushed to my side, hands hovering around me like he wanted to help but didn’t know where to start.

My vision cleared just enough for me to spot Alpha Rico, Alpha Jason’s flea-ridden, tall ass friend, doubled over, pointing at me…laughing.

“How’s that for a weak Beta?” he sneers, his grin stretching wide. The entire hallway explodes into more laughter, louder and meaner than before. "Know your damn place, little rat."

And just like that, whatever tiny shred of pride I was clinging to shatters straight to hell. My chest tightens so bad, and the tears I’ve been swallowing down all morning finally spill over, hot and fast.

What the fuck did I ever do wrong? Did I pick Jason to be my mate? Did I beg for this horrible fate? But here I am, starring as the academy’s favorite punching bag.

"Why the hell you gotta treat her like this? She didn’t do a damn thing wrong!" Matt yells at Alpha Rico. His voice was slightly trembling, and I could tell he was scared, and so could everyone else.

Alpha Rico just turns to him smugly. "You talkin’ to me, short stack?"

Matt squares up, even though he barely reaches Alpha Rico’s chin. His hands tightly grasped the corners of his clothes, and his knuckles turned white. An Omega cannot defeat an Alpha, this is a fact known to everyone. But Matt angered an Alpha who was three times stronger than him just for me. "Yeah, I’m talking to you. Just because you’re strong doesn’t mean you get to pick on people half your size."

"You serious right now?" Alpha Rico sighs, sounding more amused than anything, before grabbing Matt by the collar and yanking him clean off the floor like he weighs nothing.

"Leave him alone!" I shout through tears.

Alpha Rico doesn't bulge. The dude’s bigger, stronger, and meaner than most werewolves at the academy. Matt’s no match, not even close.

"Stop it!” I yell, but Alpha Rico just chuckles and tightens his grip, fingers squeezing around Matt’s neck brutally.

"You’re gonna kill him!" Lana screams, panic rising as Matt’s face starts turning this sick shade of purple, his mouth gasping for air, barely making a sound except for that awful choking noise.

I can’t just stand here, frozen like some useless idiot, watching my best friend get strangled because of me. Quickly, I lunge at Alpha Rico, grabbing at his thick fingers and yanking hard… but he doesn’t even flinch.

"Let him go, you fucking bastard!" I scream, and when that doesn’t work, I do the only thing left… I sink my damn teeth into his hand. Hard.

Alpha Rico jerks, hissing, and shoves me off, sending me sprawling across the floor. Pain shoots through me, but the sound of the other students laughing hurts worse.

The other students surrounded us, blocking any chance we had of escaping the chaos, as if an Alpha beating up two unranked werewolves was some kind of funny thing.

I’m pushing myself up, wiping dirt off my face, when a voice cuts through the air suddenly. "Let them go." The voice is harsh.

I freeze, turning toward the sound. It's Alpha Drake. Leaning against the lockers like he’s got all the time in the world, leather jacket hanging off his broad shoulders, eyes cold and unreadable.

Alpha Drake came to our school last semester, but because he is so famous, almost everyone knows him. He was two years older than us and had officially accepted the Alpha title. His Alpha aura was stronger than any other Alpha present. Everyone was overwhelmed by the sudden Alpha aura and fell to their knees. I still insisted on standing up from the ground. I couldn't fall down.

Alpha Rico lets out a stiff little laugh, putting on a fake ass smile. "Come on, Alpha Drake, we were just…"

"Let. Them. Go."

Alpha Drake’s eyes flash blood-red, and the whole damn hallway holds its breath.

Raine Ashford Jerry goes on. “As I was saying, we’re gonna have the Luna Trials for the ladies. Time to figure out who our top three Luna candidates are.” Behind me, Rhea snorts under her breath. “Why the hell would anyone wanna enter that lame-ass competition? Sounds boring as hell.” I can’t help but laugh. Girl’s got a point. Jerry keeps going. “The winners will get recommended to top-tier packs. They’ll have a shot at becoming Luna.” And that’s when the screaming starts. I swear, half the girls in the crowd squeal like they just found out BTS is coming to the academy. Clara? Oh, she has already mentally booked herself as the winner. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone goes missing before the trials even start. It’s honestly sad. Back in the good old days, Lunas were chosen based on destiny or whatever mystical crap the goddess had planned. Could be a damn omega with killer instincts and a pure heart. But now? It’s all about connections, politics, and who can kiss the most alph

Raine Ashford Our eyes meet, but I quickly look away from Alpha Drake. I don't even know why. “You’re late,” Jerry sighs.“Sorry. Had to take care of somethings,” Alpha Drake simply says. Jerry shakes his head, muttering something about needing a new job, then motions for him to get into position on my side of the line. He turns back to me and Blane.“Alright. You ready?” he asks. We both nod.“Get set... and go!”Blane lunges forward, throwing a punch that I duck. But then he sweeps his leg under mine and I hit the ground with a goddamn thud. The whole arena bursts into laughter like a bunch of drunk hyenas.Except for my friends. And Alpha Drake. His eyes narrow, fists clenched tight, one leg twitching like he’s seconds away from storming at Blane. What's with him?“Get up, little girl, or you gonna go cry to mommy?” Blane mocks, and that gets them all howling like fucking fools.I scoff, shaking my head as I push myself up. Just because he got lucky once, this asshole thinks I’

Raine Ashford They all start whispering, throwing those sly glances at me like I farted in public or something. I don’t flinch, don’t blink, don’t even twitch. I keep my face neutral as fuck, channeling that resting bitch face energy. Then, some jackass pipes up, all smug and stupid. “Aren’t you the one who collapsed ‘cause she got rejected?”And just like that, the whole damn arena bursts into laughter. They’re laughing like a bunch of hyenas, slapping each other, howling. I swear someone even wheezes. But before I can decide whether to roll my eyes or punch him in the throat, Rhea steps up. “She’s also the one who knocked Alpha Jason out.”Oh hell. The arena falls silent so fast I can hear someone’s gum snap. All heads turn to Rhea. She’s standing there like she didn’t just nuke the mood. Alpha Jason? Yeah, he looks ready to commit murder. Straight up gives her the I eat omegas for breakfast glare.I catch her eye and give her a nod. She nods back. Respect. Real queen shit. She's d

Raine Ashford I throw on a comfy black tracksuit, and Lana’s already dressed the same. I pause in front of the mirror to tie my hair into a bun, only to remember…oh right. My hair's gone. Lilith’s scissor-happy self cut it all off. Honestly, I still slay, but I’m not over it.“I’ll never forgive that witch,” I growl, adjusting my jacket.Lana grits her teeth. “Yeah, she sucks. But honestly, Raine, you look good.”“I always look good…even in these baggy-ass clothes my parents force me to wear. But I swear, I’m not letting this slide until I get my own lick back. I’m cutting Clara’s hair too.”That makes Lana laugh. “And I’ll be right there cheering you on.”I nod. “I know you got me,” I say, already heading out of the room.We head outside and make our way to the arena. Just across the hallway, we see Matt coming toward us like a golden retriever who’s just been let out of class.“Hey, guys! You ready?” he asks, way too chipper for my current mood.“Hey, Matt,” I say with a tired wave

Jason Royce You ever meet someone so delusional, you start wondering if they hit their head too hard during training?Yeah. That’s Raine Ashford. The Shadow Warrior competition kicks off tonight, and I’m more than ready. Not just because I plan on winning...but because I’m gonna teach Raine a damn lesson. She got real bold back at the snack bar, talking like she was gonna beat me. Like she was gonna win.Please.She said it with her whole chest too...eyes locked, chin high, like she actually believed that shit. And that? That annoyed the hell outta me.Normally, stuff like this doesn’t even graze my ego. People run their mouths all the time...I’m used to it. But Raine? Acting like she’s on my level? Nah. That’s where I draw the line. She’s trying to prove she’s worthy of being my Luna, and honestly, it’s pathetic. She’s not an Alpha female. She’s just a Beta. And I don’t want that. Never did.My old man wants me to play the good little heir...claim my mate, knock her up, and keep the

Raine Ashford Ashley…I think it’s her…flips her hair and rolls her eyes. “What does it look like, dumbass? This is our room.”Ashley is taller and leaner, while Kim is shorter... but somehow, I’m still shorter than both of them. Figures.“And what’s with you putting your crusty crap on our beds?” Kim adds, pointing like she owns the whole building. “You should be glad we didn’t chuck it out the window.”They both laugh. I haven’t even spoken yet, and I’m already one second away from launching these two like dodgeballs.I knew it. I knew something was fishy. The beds are pink…like, offensively pink. Just like how those two bimbos dress. This has Clara’s petty fingerprints all over it. And Principal Stones? That sneaky witch probably did this on purpose, just to piss me off. I can practically hear them cackling and high-fiving somewhere, thinking this is the prank of the year.Ashley tosses her over-bleached hair and snorts. “Next time, don’t dump your crap on our beds. We’ll throw it
