Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
I held the invoices out in front of Cathy, keeping my voice calm. "If we submit 14,700 dollars in fake invoices and get caught, the finance department will be held responsible.

"I can't afford to cover that kind of loss. Either pay for it out of your own pocket, or have him submit new invoices that meet the requirements."

She froze. "Come again? 14,700 dollars?"

She whipped her head toward Kai, her tone sharp with disbelief. "How does entertaining one ordinary client cost that much?"

Panic flashed across Kai's eyes. He snatched the invoices from me and quickly hid them behind his back.

"I… I was only trying to maintain your client relationship. And besides, entertaining clients is exhausting. Am I not allowed to reward myself with a few things?"

The more he spoke, the more justified he sounded. His eyes reddened as he continued, "Before we started dating, you said your money would be mine. Now you're upset over me spending just this little?"

Cathy massaged her temples and sighed helplessly. "You can't confuse business and personal spending. If you want money to buy things, you could've just asked me."

She turned to me, still standing awkwardly off to the side, and waved. "Go back to work. You did the right thing."

Needless to say, I had completely fallen out of favor with Kai after this incident.

The next day, I found my desk moved to a spot near the restroom.

Everyone knew I hadn't done anything wrong, but they all kept their distance, afraid of getting dragged into the mess themselves.

Kai was victoriously smug about his handiwork. "Starting today, this is your seat. Since you love checking the books so much, you can do it here to your heart's content. Let's see how long you last!"

I said nothing. I carefully cleaned my lucky cat with a wet wipe.

As coworkers came and went from the restroom, they shot me all kinds of looks. Once they were out of sight, hushed whispers followed, each word pricking at my back like a needle.

I ignored them and focused even harder on reviewing each payment.

Just then, a procurement payment popped up in the company's financial system.

Since joining the company, I had familiarized myself with its basic operations. This was a routine payment that went out every month.

That was when I heard the lucky cat.

"They changed the supplier for this batch, passing off inferior goods as high-quality products."

My finger was just about to click "Confirm" when I froze. A moment later, I rejected the payment.

Within minutes, Will Sullivan from the procurement department stormed over with a grim look. "I've settled everything with the supplier. Who the hell are you to reject the payment now?"

Will was a burly man with a booming voice. When he planted himself before my desk, he looked downright menacing.

"If this holds up the delivery at the end of the month, are you going to take responsibility?"

The lucky cat piped up, sounding indignant this time.

"He and his brother, Kai, have already made a deal. They want to pocket kickbacks from the payment."

I stood up and met his intimidating glare without flinching. "You switched to a new supplier. I need to inspect the samples before approving payment."

Guilt flickered across Will's face, but he quickly raised his voice. "It'll take a week to get the samples here! The factory schedule can't wait that long! Besides, we've signed the contract!

"If we fail to deliver by the end of the month, will you promise to pay the penalties for breaching the contract?"

My voice remained calm, but my tone left no room for compromise. "We can always terminate a signed contract, but if the goods fail to meet quality standards, the company will suffer an even greater loss."

At that moment, Kai stormed over and launched straight into a tirade.

"You blocked my reimbursement—fine. But now, you're holding up the procurement payments, too? Do you think being in finance gives you the power to run this entire company?"

He turned toward the rest of the office and yelled sarcastically, "Everyone, look at how far our finance department thinks its authority extends! They won't even pay a routine procurement bill!

"Are they trying to make sure we all go hungry at the end of the month or what?"

With their own interests possibly affected, some coworkers immediately spoke up in anger.

"If we can't deliver the goods by the end of the month, don't expect us to share the blame for the losses!"

"I bet he's just putting on his holier-than-thou act to catch Ms. Miller's attention. He wants to become her kept man!"

Amid the murmuring, Kai lifted his chin with unmistakable arrogance. "Approve the payment, or you should start thinking about how a broke nobody like you will afford to cover all the losses."

My expression remained unchanged. "Then we'll let Ms. Miller decide. If she approves it, I'll release the payment immediately."

The security guards roughly dragged Kai toward the exit. He twisted and thrashed wildly, kicking one of them in the shin. The guard cried out in pain and let go. Kai lost his balance and stumbled backward before slamming his head against the corner of the desk.Blood trickled from his temple. His face turned deathly pale as he collapsed to the floor.Hearing the commotion, Will immediately rushed out of the neighboring office. "Kai! Kai, what happened to you?"He threw himself down beside the unconscious Kai, then looked up and saw Cathy standing nearby, watching coldly.Livid, he sprang to his feet with bloodshot eyes and pointed at her, roaring, "Was making him take the fall not enough? You even had him beaten up?"Cathy took a step back, her voice faltering. "He lost his balance and fell. That had nothing to do with me—"Will wasn't listening. He snatched a fruit knife off the desk. "How dare you hurt my brother? I'll fucking kill you!"She instantly backed herself into a co

When I answered the call, Cathy's exhausted voice came through. "You were right all along, Conrad. I put money into that project three times, and in the end, they took the money and ran."She paused, her tone turning pleading. "Could you come back and help me sort out the accounts? I'll pay you double your old salary."I chuckled coldly. "No, thank you. Things are going great at my new company."Silence hung on the other end for a few seconds. Then, as if making up her mind, she said, "If you're willing to come back, I can… end things with Kai. That man is a dimwit. Being with him has ruined all my luck."I was in disbelief. My voice instantly turned cold."There's been a great misunderstanding. From the invoices I refused to approve to the procurement orders I blocked and my objections to that project, I was simply doing my job."None of it had anything to do with you personally. So, have some self-respect and don't call me again."The next morning, just as I arrived outside my

Julia handed me the project files. "You're in charge of everything. As long as you keep an eye on the payment schedule, I can rest easy."My lips curved into a confident smile, ambition burning in my eyes. It felt incredible to finally have the freedom to do things my way.At the new company, I was like a wild stallion finally off its leash. I could speak my mind without holding back, and the profits I brought in far exceeded expectations.Everyone looked at me with newfound respect.During a break, I opened my social media feed and noticed that Kai had been showing off his luxury purchases. His caption read, "The people who told me to quit back then can't even reach where I started today."Will commented below, "Someone better not get jealous looking at all this. LMAO."I gave the post a "Like" and didn't leave a comment.Over the next two weeks, Kai's feed practically turned into a nonstop stream of bragging. He posted more than a dozen times a day, flaunting his wealth at ev

I froze for a second and turned to look at Julia. She simply smirked and whispered back, "Didn't you take enough crap at that company? I'm going to bleed them dry."When Kai saw us raise our paddles, his face fell. He pointed at me and shrieked, "What do you think you're doing, Conrad? You acted all high and mighty when you stopped us from investing back then!"Now that you've found yourself a new sugar mama, you came here to steal the project from us?"The hall fell silent for a few solid seconds. Their eyes turned toward us.Kai's chest heaved with rage. He glared at me as if he wanted to tear me limb from limb. "You asshole! You stopped us from investing so you could swoop in and take the opportunity for yourself! You're shameless!"Cathy frowned at me, so disapproving and disappointed. "This is beneath you, Conrad. If you're still trying to get my attention, my advice is to stop this nonsense right now."Whispers rippled through the hall. They were all waiting for the drama t

Julia Donovan adjusted her glasses and gestured for me to continue. I met her gaze firmly and laid out my terms."For any major outflow of funds, I get veto power. That's non-negotiable."She smiled and readily agreed. "No problem. Welcome aboard. We have a bidding conference next week. Come with me and help me evaluate the proposals."The bidding conference was held at the convention center downtown.A red carpet stretched all the way to the entrance, and the event was so lavish it almost felt like they were trying hard to impress. The most coveted project was the very one Kai and his people had been discussing.I followed Julia into the hall. As soon as I stepped inside, I spotted three familiar faces. Kai sized me up and down, then glanced at Julia beside me."Found yourself a new sugar mama already? You really have no shame."Cathy followed his gaze and frowned when she saw me. "Keep taking shortcuts, and sooner or later, they'll come back to bite you."I was so pissed I a

I quietly sat down and opened my notebook. The business team manager was the first to speak, his voice brimming with excitement."I've been tracking this project for three months. If we move in now, we can push all our competitors out within six months."Kai's eyes lit up, and he chimed in eagerly. "Then let's do it! Why hesitate when we have such a good opportunity?"Cathy looked torn, clearly still undecided. Will began his persuasion. "Cathy, what industry doesn't come with high risks and high returns? With our current resources, we can absolutely pull this off."If we wait until everyone else jumps in, there won't be anything left for us. We'll miss the boat entirely."She tapped her fingers on the table twice before turning to me. "Conrad, how much money do we currently have available in the accounts?"I flipped through my notebook. "We have 2.3 million dollars in available funds at the moment. If we put all of it into this project, the risk could be rather high."Kai sco
