Winning Back the Wife

Fake Death

When Michele Barone, the Underboss of the Moretti family, proposes to me, I receive a video call from another version of myself, who's five years in the future. In the video call, my older self is already shaved bald. She's also trapped in the Moretti family's basement. "Don't marry him! You have to get rid of the unborn baby in your belly and get out of here right now!" I throw the ring to the table on the spot before going through an abortion right away. When Michele finds out the truth, he breaks down and cries his heart out. At the same time, he keeps demanding answers from me. All of my family and friends keep blaming and accusing me. They even claim that I've gone nuts. Meanwhile, Michele's childhood friend, Gianna Grasso, hides outside the room with a hand clamped over her mouth as she giggles secretly to herself. "AI nowadays sure is powerful! I can't believe she actually believes that the woman in the video call is actually her future self five years from now!" My lips curl into a small smile. Honestly speaking, I can tell right away that it's just a fake AI video, based on how shabbily it's made. It's quite simple as to why I've done those things, though—I've received an actual video call from my future self for real.

Chapter 1
Emilia's POV"Are you done kicking up a fuss? Even if you're jealous of Gianna, you shouldn't risk your own health like that."Michele Barone, the Underboss of the Moretti family, was sitting beside the hospital bed, while I was leaning against the headboard and gazing out of the window. A dull, post-surgical ache still lingered in my lower abdomen."Michele, this is all my fault." Gianna Grasso stood to the side, her voice frail. "I just thought that AI was interesting and wanted to play a joke on Emilia. I never imagined she'd take it seriously."Michele raised a hand and patted her back."Don't cry, Gianna. With your heart condition, you can't afford to get upset. This isn't your fault. Emilia was just being too willful."He reached out, wanting to stroke my cheek. But I turned my head away to avoid his touch. Displeasure flickered across his face, but he quickly suppressed it."Be good and stop throwing tantrums. We can always have another baby later. You mustn't do such rid

Chapter 2
Emilia's POVThe day I was discharged from the hospital, Michele came to pick me up.Sitting in the passenger seat, I spotted two pink suitcases on the back seat at a glance. They belonged to Gianna.I turned to Michele and asked, "What's this about? Are you having her move in?"Michele remained perfectly composed. "It's not a permanent move. Gianna's depression has relapsed. I didn't feel comfortable leaving her to live alone, so I'm having her stay with us temporarily. The guest bedroom in our house has always been empty anyway—it'll be perfect for her."But that was supposed to be our marital home. I spent six months carefully picking out every single detail and getting everything just right.I hadn't even officially moved in yet, whereas Gianna had already settled in as if she owned the place."I see."I leaned back calmly against the seat and closed my eyes to rest. The car pulled into the estate. There was now a pair of bunny slippers sitting by the front door.Gianna,

Chapter 3
Emilia's POVGianna ended up staying at the house for half a month. To keep Gianna's depression at bay, Michele went out of his way to please her in every way imaginable.Every day, he bought her gifts, took her on outings, and even introduced her to all the major family connections and networks I had spent years cultivating.I remained remarkably docile, leaving early and coming home late every day to take care of my emigration paperwork and handle my assets. One afternoon, I came home earlier than usual to retrieve a very important blueprint. It was the original layout of the stronghold that my papa, Anzo Amato, left me—and also the only thing I truly cared about now that I was leaving.I opened the locked drawer in the study, only to find the blueprint inside had vanished. My mind went blank, and I immediately went to the living room.Gianna was lounging on the couch, nibbling on fruit like she didn't have a care in the world.I looked at her coldly. "Where's my blueprint?"

Emilia's POVThe next day, Michele took my hand and introduced me to everyone at the party."This is my fiancee, Emilia."I maintained a poised smile the entire time. The party reached its climax. The lights in the entire venue went out, a single spotlight falling on Michele and me. Every gaze in the room converged on us.Michele brought out the ring box and slowly got down on one knee.Just as he was about to speak, his phone suddenly rang with the exclusive ringtone he had specially set for Gianna.Under the watchful eyes of the entire crowd, he instinctively pulled out his phone. The moment he saw the message, his expression drastically changed."Emilia, Gianna cut her wrist while slicing fruit in her apartment. She's lost a lot of blood and has been afraid of seeing blood since she was little. I have to go save her."He snapped the ring box shut and stood up. Then, he casually patted my shoulder and said, "Be good and wait here for me. Also, help me explain things to the g

Third-Person POVThe phone slipped from Michele's hand. He'd always prided himself on being rational, but in that moment, he lost it completely."No, that's impossible! Absolutely impossible!"He rushed out of the apartment and sped toward the airport at full speed.Outside, the rain was coming down in sheets. No matter how hard the wipers worked, they couldn't keep the windshield clear.Apart from the words "lost contact", "thunderstorm", and "low survival rate" swirling around, his mind was a complete blank. He refused to believe it. He thought Emilia was just throwing a tantrum. The airport terminal was in chaos. The families of the passengers on the missing flight wailed in grief, while the staff tried desperately to calm the crowd.Every sound grated on his nerves. Michele charged to the service desk and grabbed the staff member by the arm."Where's Emilia? She was on that flight!"The staff member, startled by Michele's bloodshot eyes, stammered, "S-sir, the search an

Third-Person POVFive years later, a small-scale armed conflict had just ended at the border of Listoria.Michele stood dressed all in black outside a makeshift field medical tent. His frame was gaunt, the dark circles under his eyes etched deep with five years of relentless, sleepless exhaustion.Over the past five years, he had largely withdrawn from the day-to-day management of the Moretti family. In fact, he had become a man adrift outside the family's system. He had long since violated the Moretti family's ironclad code of conduct with his prolonged absences without leave and extended stays abroad.Had he not been constantly donating vast sums of money and medical equipment to overseas war zones, which built up a good reputation and philanthropic prestige for the family, Don Moretti would never have tolerated his behavior.During those years, Michele had poured all his spare energy and what remained of his assets into cross-border humanitarian aid. Wherever war raged or the

Third-Person POVIn the following two weeks, Michele lingered outside the medical camp every single day. Afraid of incurring Emilia's disgust, he didn't dare come close. All he did was watch her from a distance. He looked into everything she'd been through over the past five years. That night, after the party, Emilia hadn't boarded the plane. Instead, she'd followed a medical aid team and flown to the Listoria war zone on a military transport aircraft. In the five years since, she'd traveled across this war-torn land. Not only had she completed over a thousand surgeries and saved countless lives, but she'd also received a medal from the United Nations as recognition of her humanitarian work. In fact, the locals regarded her as a hero. There was another record in the file.Three years ago, the medical outpost where she was stationed had come under attack by armed militants. They'd been besieged for a full 72 hours. When supplies ran out, Emilia picked up a weapon. In the photo at

Gunfire and explosions rang out one after another, flames illuminating the night sky.Several vehicles mounted with heavy machine guns tore into the camp. Masked gunmen sprayed bullets in every direction. People fled in panic.Michele leapt from his makeshift cot and grabbed his coat, rushing out. There was only one thought in his mind—to find Emilia. He ran frantically against the fleeing crowd toward the medical tent, shouting Emilia's name over and over.A stray bullet grazed his shoulder, drawing blood immediately. However, he paid no attention to it.His gaze was fixed on the tent, half of which had already collapsed.Emilia was shielding two injured local kids as they laboriously made their way toward the bomb shelter.Emilia didn't have any protective gear. Emilia's POVThe medics arrived, carrying stretchers."Dr. Amato, are you alright?""I'm fine." I lowered my head to examine the kids' wounds.Vincenzo walked up beside me and looked down at the body on the ground."Dr. Amato, Mr. Barone… He—"I cut him off and turned to walk toward the operating table."Transfer his body over to the embassy. They'll get in touch with his family to make the funeral arrangements."That night, after performing the last surgery of the day, I didn't rest as I usually did. Instead, I sat on the sandbags outside the tent and looked up at the starry sky.Scenes from the past kept surfacing in my mind, from the first time Michele drove me home to when he first held my hand. The day I went into anaphylactic shock from eating seafood, he had kept vigil outside the emergency room the entire night. Before that, he had carried me on his back across two blocks and vowed to stay by my side as long as we lived.I'd once believed we would be together forever

Emilia's POVThree days later, Michele's body was transported back to the country.A grand memorial service was held in the city center. After it ended, Michele's assistant, Domenico Fontana, called me on the phone."Ms. Amato, Mr. Barone left his entire estate to you. May I know when you'll return to handle the paperwork?"I was silent for a moment before replying, "I will not accept his estate. Please donate everything to the humanitarian aid fund established in his name."With that, I ended the call.Meanwhile, in the basement, Gianna learned of Michele's death from the news on television. She started throwing herself against the walls and shrieking hysterically."No, that's impossible! Michele can't be dead! He promised he'd take care of me forever!"No one paid any attention to her screams. Instead, they reinforced the basement door with stronger locks and steadily increased the dosage of the sedatives. The order Michele had once given had become a reality—Gianna would n
