Things had been... quieter.

The gala had done its job. Donations had poured in. The press had spun the kiss into romantic headlines, branding Ava and Alex the city’s golden couple. Pearl was thrilled. Eleanor approved. Even Rafael hadn’t voiced an objection, which was a miracle in itself.

For days, it all felt like progress.

Until this morning.

Ava woke to the soft patter of rain on the windows, the sky outside her bedroom grey and quiet. The weight in her chest had arrived before her thoughts did—heavy, sinking. She blinked at the ceiling, unmoving.

“Rain,” she murmured, her voice scratchy. “That’s all.”

But when she finally picked up her phone, the truth stared her in the face.

Liam Callahan – 8 Years Today.

Ava stared at the calendar notification for a long moment. She had remembered last night. Had told herself not to forget. But sleep had wrapped her too tightly, and grief never screamed—it whispered, then sank its claws in deep.

She sat up, pressing her palms into the mattress.

Neither of them knew how long they sat there.Time had quieted itself. The only sound was the gentle tap of rain against trees, the soft breath of wind moving between gravestones, and the unspoken ache stretching between them. At some point, the drizzle had faded. Clouds had started to part, reluctantly, like they weren’t quite ready to let go of the grief either. The sun tried pushing through, throwing silver light over the cemetery lawn. A few birds started to stir in the trees again.Alex finally shifted beside her. “You ready to head home?”Ava didn’t move. Her fingers were still curled lightly over her knee, the fabric of her gloves damp from the grass and mist. Her lips parted slightly, but the words were delayed.“I don’t want to see her yet,” she admitted softly.Alex turned his head. “Pearl?”She nodded. “Not like this. Not with… this still on me.”“She’d understand.”“Maybe,” she murmured, “but she’s already seen too many versions of me that are broken. I try not to show h

“Kiss me,” she whispered against the low hum of applause.Alex’s mind stuttered. He blinked, caught between confusion and the sudden pulse of something hotter. “What?”They were at the gala, and all the reporters were there, too. This was her big night.“You heard me,” she murmured, eyes locked on his. “Now. While they’re watching.”And then she was leaning in, and he couldn’t look away. His first thought: This is a bad idea. His second: This is already happening. She smelled like expensive champagne and warm skin. Her lips brushed his—barely a graze—but it short-circuited something inside him. Time slowed, then snapped. She kissed him as if she possessed the moment—and perhaps even him. There was strategy in it, but also something else—something personal. Her mouth moved against his with confidence, coaxing, testing, daring him to follow her lead. And he did.His hand came up, fingers curving around her jaw. He kissed her back, deeper this time. Intentional. Possessive. He felt the s

“You need to cancel,” Eleanor said, folding her arms across her chest like she hadn’t just heard Ava the first three times.Ava stood in their clean living room, the strong smell of lavender from a diffuser filling the tense atmosphere. Sunlight poured in through the tall windows, highlighting the silver strands in Eleanor's hair as she walked back and forth. Ava felt her jaw tighten and her fingers balling into fists. “Cancelling sends a message,” she said. “It says I’m scared. I’m not.”“You’re reckless,” Eleanor snapped, stopping to face her. “You, Pearl, Alex—someone took a shot at you by the lake. This isn’t a game, Ava.”“It was a single shot in the distance. No evidence, no confirmation. I’m not pulling out of a fundraiser that took three months to coordinate.”“Don’t minimise this,” Eleanor snapped. “Someone took a shot. And it wasn’t a warning, Ava, it was a test. You’ve been rattling too many trees.”“I can handle trees.”Eleanor stepped forward. “Still a no from me.”“If i

  • I Found My Mafia Mom, A Cop Husband   031. F-M-L-Y Picnic...

“You two have five minutes to stop being adults and start being fun,” Pearl declared, hands on her hips, with a picnic basket swinging at her side like a badge of honour.Ava raised an eyebrow, sunglasses perched on her head, the lakeside breeze toying with her loose braid. “Define fun.”Pearl thrust a folded checkered blanket toward Alex. “Fun is where you pretend you’re not old and tired.”Alex took the blanket with a grin. “Ouch.”They were standing by the lake, with the sun setting low and golden behind the trees. The water sparkled as ducks swam lazily by. The air was filled with the smells of fresh grass and peanut butter sandwiches.Pearl had brought everything: homemade sandwiches, juice boxes, fruit skewers, and a neon-coloured kite she’d half-built herself. She’d also informed both adults, in separate texts, that today’s picnic was mandatory. Her mission? “Get Mom and Detective Dad to hug.”Neither Ava nor Alex had the heart—or energy—to argue. They were both still reeling f

“This feels… off.” Rafael’s voice was low, muffled under the buzz of old fluorescent lights and the faint echo of dripping water.“Everything is,” Ava replied calmly. Her voice was distorted through the filter of her mask—sleek black, minimal, voice-masked. “But this one needs to play out.”The abandoned cannery stood tall, its rusty metal walls creaking in the wind. Inside, the air felt heavy with the smells of oil and mildew, creating a tense atmosphere that seemed to hang in the empty spaces. Broken conveyor belts added to the eerie silence, broken only by the sound of footsteps. The Godmother moved like smoke, masked in black. Her figure was wrapped in sleek matte fabric, and her boots were soft against the cracked concrete. At her side, Rafael mirrored her calm expression, and behind them, two La Rosa men pushed a dolly loaded with black crates, all stamped with a discreet symbol: a triangle inside a circle.“It really needs to,” Rafael murmured. “Kalenko’s got itchy hands.”Av

Pearl cleared her throat and pointed dramatically to the tiramisu. “This must be shared. It’s in the name of romance.”Alex raised a brow. “Is that a rule now?”Pearl nodded solemnly. “House policy. One spoon, two mouths. Make it romantic.”Ava rolled her eyes but picked up a spoon. “Fine. One bite. But I’m not feeding him like we’re in some Hallmark movie.”Alex scooped a bite first, extending it halfway across the table. “You sure? Could be a new tradition.”She hesitated. She hesitated for just a brief moment, allowing the tension to flare up. Their fingers brushed. She blinked, heart skipping just a little too obviously, and leaned forward to take the bite, her lips grazing the edge of the spoon.“Mm,” she said, avoiding his gaze. “Okay… fine. That’s good.”Pearl’s camera clicked. “Perfect.”“Delete that,” Ava said immediately, cheeks tinged pink.“Nope. Memory secured,” Pearl replied triumphantly.Ava cleared her throat, cheeks colouring slightly as she reached for her wine agai

“Well then, Detective,” Ava murmured, a hint of challenge in her smile, “let’s see what you’re really here for.”“Sure,” Alex said, tilting his glass ever so slightly toward her, “but first, a toast.”Ava arched a brow, amused. “A toast, huh? You came all this way just to make toasts now?”Alex smirked. “You’d be surprised what I’d do for a decent glass of wine and some good company.”She leaned back, swirling the wine in her glass. “Alright, what should we toast to then?”He paused, pretending to consider, tapping a finger against the stem of his glass. “Uhm… I don’t know.”Ava chuckled. “The toast was your idea. You must have thought of something before suggesting one.”Alex let out a low laugh, the kind that slipped out from under his breath. “Touché.” He glanced at the glowing table, at the effort Pearl had poured into it—the flowers, the fairy lights, the warm plates waiting patiently beneath polished domes. He knew she must have had help, but it was still lovely. “How about we

  • I Found My Mafia Mom, A Cop Husband   027. Something Really Special...

“Ready for your surprise, Mom?” Pearl beamed as she tugged Ava by the hand toward the living room, practically bouncing on her toes with excitement.Ava followed, barefoot, a glass of red wine swirling lazily in her hand. She wore a silky black camisole tucked into slim, high-waisted jeans, the delicate straps teasing across her shoulders. Her cardigan was casually draped open, with the sleeves rolled up, giving her a relaxed yet undeniably alluring look. A faint shimmer of perfume clung to her skin, a small indulgence she hadn’t bothered with in weeks.“I’m almost afraid to ask,” Ava said dryly, eyeing her daughter with suspicion.Selena lounged on the couch, sipping from a tumbler. “Oh, you should be.”Ava shot her best friend a withering look. “I can’t believe you agreed to help… whatever this is.”Selena shrugged with a smug grin. “I promised her anything. Besides, I plan on winning even more favourite aunt points. I’ve got a title to defend.”Ava sighed, pressing her palm to her
