Chapter 4

Author: Oliver
I bent down and picked up the ring Holton had slammed onto the table, running my thumb slowly over the moon crest.

This was the token we'd exchanged at the Moon Altar eight years ago.

Back then, Holton held my hand and said that no matter how many wolves joined, no matter how big the territory grew, he would never let me face anything alone.

Now he was telling me this pack was his.

I slid the ring back onto my finger. Then I unclipped the silver wolf badge from my waist, the one that marked me as Luna, and slammed it onto the stone table without a second thought.

CRACK. The silver badge split down the middle, pieces scattering across the surface.

Marlene flinched and ducked behind Holton.

I looked at the two of them and nearly laughed at how absurd it all was.

"Kick me out?"

"You think you get to decide whether I stay or go?"

Holton's face went dark. He seemed ready to pull rank, but I was already done listening.

I turned, shoved open the heavy wooden doors of the council hall, and walked out without looking back.

A woman who'd been thrown out of her own pack by her own mate. Losing her temper on the way out. What was the worst that could happen?

Past the doors, I took one last look at the black wolf banner hanging above the valley entrance.

Eight years ago, this was nothing but a stretch of wasteland no other pack wanted.

Back then, Holton hadn't become Alpha yet, and I was just a young she-wolf with no name and no backing.

No other pack would take us. So I grabbed his hand and we started from zero.

We scouted hunting grounds together. Drew the territory lines together. Wrote the pack's rules together.

I trained the warriors, planned patrol routes, personally visited one potential ally after another. Holton recruited wolves and won over the Elders.

The pack started with a dozen members. We didn't even have proper shelter.

But we survived the hardest years. Built our own territory. Earned the loyalty of wolves who chose to follow.

Back then, Holton stood in the moonlight, held my hand, and said with a smile:

"Irene, one day I'll make every wolf out there know that this is our home."

Now the pack was strong.

And he was telling me this home had nothing to do with me.

I shook the memories out of my head and turned to leave.

Eight years. That's all it was.

If he didn't want me, was I really going to beg to stay?

I hadn't made it far from the territory when my phone lit up.

It was Grace, the pack's administrative manager.

She'd been with us since the very beginning, one of the original dozen. I thought she might have a kind word.

Instead, her voice was ice cold. Pure business.

"Irene, Alpha Holton has confirmed your departure paperwork."

"Per the old charter, you'll need to sign away your share of territorial revenue before you can collect your final compensation."

I was quiet for a moment.

She paused, then her voice shifted. Higher. Condescending.

"Honestly, I've always thought Holton gave you more than enough respect."

"The pack is about to close major alliances with the northern territories, and you're throwing everything away over a rookie wolf. It's beneath you."

"And Marlene happens to be my niece. When it comes down to it, she's practically your junior."

"For my sake, maybe lay off her from now on."

So that's what this was.

No wonder she'd been on Marlene's side from the start.

I thought about the early days. She'd just been promoted to pack manager when her mate ran off with another she-wolf while she was pregnant.

Holton wanted to replace her. He came close more than once.

I was the one who stepped in. I thought a mother alone with a pup deserved a chance. I went to the Elders personally. I even used my own savings to hire a healer to look after her child.

She'd held my hand that day and cried for a long time. Said she'd never forget what I did.

Eight years later, what she remembered was a very different story.

"Irene, as a woman, you're too intense."

"An Alpha needs a Luna who's gentle and knows her place. Not one who's constantly trying to compete with her own mate."

"Look at Marlene. She knows how to behave. She'd never make everything into a battle the way you do."

She was actually lecturing me.

I listened and felt no anger. Just the absurdity of it.

"I saved your position back then. And now you think I'm the one who ruined your family?"

Dead quiet on the other end.

Then her cold, undisguised scoff.

"Who asked you to stick your nose in?"

"My mate and I renewed our bond afterward."

"I have a complete family now. My children. My life. What you did back then only humiliated me in front of the pack."

I completely lost interest in continuing the conversation.

The most ridiculous thing about people is this: you break your back pulling someone up, and all they remember is that your hand was rough.

I cut the line.

Under the old charter, I was entitled to half the territory's revenue.

But I knew that since they'd decided to push me out, they were never going to honor the agreement.

That so-called final compensation was probably the last scrap they were willing to throw.

Fine.

I didn't want the pack's glory. I didn't want Holton's pity.

I just wanted what was mine. Then I'd get as far away from all of them as possible.

From now on, nobody was going to use the words "Luna" or "mate" or "family" to trap me here ever again.

Lane chased me for a full year.He didn't make grand declarations to the whole academy the way Holton had. He didn't push to make me his mate overnight. He just showed up. Every day.Fixed my fence. Walked the coastline with me. Brought me fresh fish and moon flowers.Once, he looked at me dead seriously and said:"I can't let someone steal you from me a second time.""If you don't say yes soon, I'm probably gonna spend the rest of my life with nothing but my right hand."I laughed so hard I nearly fell off the rocks. It wasn't that I didn't like him.I just enjoyed watching this man stumble around trying to win me over. It made life feel fun again. That evening, the sun was about to sink into the ocean.I reached out, grabbed his collar, and slowly pulled him close.Lane went completely rigid.I pressed a light kiss to the corner of his mouth."Let's give it a shot."He froze for a few full seconds. Then he scooped me up and took off running down the beach."I have a mate!""Irene sai

When I told Mia the name, she went silent on the other end for a solid half minute."Lane?""How come that doesn't ring a bell at all?"I explained carefully. "The host at the academy ceremony. The one Holton snatched the moon crest microphone from.""You even complimented him at the time. Said he had a nice voice, good reflexes."Mia finally remembered."Oh!""The young wolf who kept stealing glances at you!"I couldn't help smiling."He's not exactly the same kid anymore.""Built like a dream."Mia immediately started making a fuss."Irene, don't you dare let someone steal him from you this time."We were in the middle of talking when she suddenly lowered her voice."By the way, after you warned me, I had my husband look into the Silver Moon situation again.""That pack manager suddenly changed her story at the tribunal. Said her mate never actually hurt her. That she injured herself in the chaos.""Almost got the whole case thrown out."I frowned.Mia scoffed."Good thing there was

Eventually, I settled for good at the coastal pack.Wide golden beaches, open ocean, and a small cabin that was all mine.No power struggles. No endless border disputes. No one expecting me to carry the weight of a Luna title every single day.I could finally just be Irene. One afternoon, I was walking along the shore in a deep red dress.Footsteps came rushing up behind me.I turned.A tall young wolf was running straight at me.I instinctively thought I'd dropped something. But when he stopped in front of me, his face was pure joy."Irene?""It's really you?"I eyed him warily. He immediately pulled out his moon crest stone and opened an old image. There I was, years younger.Academy hall, moonlight falling through the high windows, me in a white dress, standing in the crowd, looking up at the speaker onstage. His ears turned red."You probably don't remember.""I had a crush on you for a long time back then.""After the academy ceremony, I was going to tell you how I felt.""But Hol

Not long after, Mia sent me a wolf spirit image. On screen, Holton was holding Marlene's hand, standing in front of Silver Moon's Moon Altar.Pack members surrounded them. They were having a bonding ceremony. But Marlene's figure was slim. No sign of the belly that had been obvious just months ago.Mia messaged me, barely containing herself."Irene, guess why she went from a brand-new warrior to Silver Moon's new Luna?"I was leaning lazily against the doorframe of my seaside cabin."What did Holton do this time?"Mia was laughing so hard she could barely type."You actually guessed it.""Holton lost control in a rage.""The pup didn't make it.""She's got no baby now, but Holton still had to go public with the bonding."I was quiet for a moment.Mia went on."Oh, and remember Silver Moon's pack manager? The woman who was backing Marlene the whole time.""Her mate broke into the council hall and stabbed her recently.""My husband just picked up that case.""Apparently they'd already di

I raised my hand and pointed at Marlene, standing behind Holton. Her belly was visibly round now. Even the oversized fur cloak couldn't hide it."What about her?""You're not going to take responsibility for that either?"Holton's face changed completely.Marlene had her back to him. The color drained from her face, piece by piece.I didn't give either of them time to explain. While Holton was turning toward Marlene, I scooped the moon crest stone off the ground, turned, and walked away. This time, I didn't look back.

Not long after, I settled near the coast with a neutral pack. They didn't pressure me to pledge loyalty to any Alpha. They just wanted me to manage a few cross-border trade routes and handle resource exchanges between packs. It was near the ocean.Every morning, I could hear the tide. For the first time in my life, I discovered that not waking up every day to border conflicts, grain reserves, and alliance negotiations meant life could actually feel this light.Mia made a special trip down from the north to visit. She lasted less than ten minutes standing on the beach with me before she started rating every young wolf who walked past."That one's not bad. Nice shoulders.""That one's good too. Long legs.""See the one on the far right? Those abs though."I pointed at her mate standing right behind her."The best one's still that guy, isn't it?"Mia turned around, saw him, and doubled over laughing. She threw her arm around my shoulder."Irene, we've known each other for years.
