Chapter 3

Auteur: Sad Toadito
"Ida, are you trying to use Nigel as an excuse to keep hanging on to me?" Charlie's voice pulled me out of my memories.

I looked up and met his suspicious gaze, but I did not promise him anything. He would not believe me even if I swore on my life. Once I was gone from their lives, they would believe it on their own.

I pushed the agreement toward him. "Hurry up and sign it. I have other things to do."

My firmness made Charlie's visible suspicion decrease somewhat. He quickly signed his name, and I took my copy, ready to leave.

Suddenly, Charlie stopped me. "Ida, today is Nigel's birthday. Don't forget."

I nodded, then gave him the reassurance he wanted. "You can handle it. Just send the address to my number later. This will be the last birthday I celebrate with him."

After leaving the company, I took out my phone and bought a plane ticket to Oceanton for the next day. That would be the place I would settle down if there were no other surprises.

I walked into a cafe and bought a cup of coffee. Just then, Charlie's text came in as well: [We'll celebrate at home.]

I did not reply. Instead, I went to the mall and picked out a toy car without much care before returning to the place Charlie and I called home.

Before I even went inside, I could already hear Nigel laughing.

I opened the door, and I saw Nigel sitting in Megan's lap.

When they saw I was the one who had come in, neither of them moved. I could not be bothered to look at them either as I sat down on the couch and switched the cartoon to a drama.

"Who said you could change it?" Nigel stood up and pointed a toy gun at my forehead, his eyes full of a kind of hostility that should not be something a boy his age should have.

My fingers curled slightly, and I ignored the ache in my chest. "Go and play with Megan. Mommy bought you a new toy."

The boy got distracted easily and looked at the new toy.

Megan laughed. "Is that Nigel's birthday present? You really didn't put in much effort despite being his mother."

She wanted to drive a wedge between us, but I would not take the bait.

I rolled my eyes and went back to watching my drama.

The atmosphere in the room became still. When Megan saw I was not going to react, she let out a soft scoff and turned away.

I had watched three episodes by the time Charlie finally came home. He was carrying a cake, and Megan ran into his arms. Then, she turned and gave me a provoking look.

Nigel ran over too, staring at the two-tier chocolate cake, drooling as he shouted with delight.

The three of them talked and laughed, looking exactly like a family.

I watched them calmly. Charlie coughed lightly and let go of Megan before calling out to me. "Ida, what does Nigel like to eat? Can you prepare something for him?"

I originally wanted to refuse, but then I met Nigel's eyes. Even though I was completely disappointed in my son now, I had truly loved him in the past.

I pressed my lips and walked into the kitchen.

I made three dishes suitable for children according to the recipes for healthy meals. However, Nigel pushed them away the moment I set them on the table. He yelled, "I don't like these!"

Megan was startled and threw herself into Charlie's arms. "Ida! Even Nigel likes sweet food. How can you care so little when you're his own mother?"

I did not care?

Megan had bought Nigel so many sweets that he already had cavities at his age. That was why I had no choice but to cut him off from the sweets.

I stood there and met Charlie's disappointed gaze as he said, "You really aren't suited to be a mother."

I lowered my head.

I had poured my time, energy, and effort into Nigel's health all these years, but in the end, I could not even compare to someone like Charlie, who only showed up once in a while, or Megan, who simply bought him snacks.

I suddenly laughed. "That's right. I'm not suited to be a mother or a wife. Isn't that perfect? You can change your wife, and Nigel can change his mother."

Then, my eyes moved to Nigel, and I gently patted his head as I said in a tone that was both gentle and cruel. "As for me, I'll have other children eventually, too."

After that, I walked to the couch to pick up my purse before leaving.

Behind me, Nigel was cheering happily as Charlie's cold voice came to me, "Ida, are you sure you want to leave? Today is the last time you'll see Nigel. I will never let you see him again, even if you kneel and beg me in the future."

Those words would have been cruel to any mother, but I no longer cared.

I simply stopped and said something Charlie never expected. "Then I wish the three of you to form a perfect, happy family. I hope that you can celebrate like this every year."

After the situation with Megan was handled, I immediately flew back to Oceanton. On one hand, I truly missed my own home and Snowy. On the other hand, I also wanted to get away from Charlie and Nigel's constant pestering. But I had not expected Charlie to follow me all the way to Oceanton. That night, my doorbell rang. I saw Charlie standing outside with Nigel. I did not open the door, and I only spoke to them through the video doorbell. "Don't come and disturb my life again."Nigel banged the door. "Mommy, don't you want me anymore?!"I took a sip of water, and my parched throat felt much better. Then, I coughed lightly and said, "I'll always be your mother on paper, but I don't expect anything from you anymore. Do you understand that, Nigel?"While a child could not understand, Charlie could. He began to sob, "Can't you give me another chance? I love you."I scoffed. "I gave you plenty of chances, but I don't love you anymore. I don't care about your love anymore either. All

After that, we went to another mall to buy clothes for Emma. By the time I got her into a better mood, the sky had already gone dark.Jamie asked for my location and came to pick her up.Some time later, he was standing across the street as I walked toward him with Emma in my arms.A black sedan suddenly sped toward us in that instant. I was so frightened that I instinctively ran forward. However, the car seemed aimed straight at me, as if the driver was determined to kill me.The next moment, I heard a heart-wrenching scream beside my ear. "Ida!"A powerful force knocked me into the grass on the other side of the road, and sharp branches and thorns cut into my skin. The first thing I did was to check on Emma. She was not hurt, and she was only frightened and frozen in shock in my arms.Jamie ran over and pulled both of us into his arms, trembling uncontrollably. "Are you okay? Are either of you hurt?"I shook my head, then looked at Charlie, who was lying on the ground and gr

Nigel cried so hard he could barely breathe. After making sure Emma was alright, I had no choice but to hold Nigel and comfort him. "Nigel, I won't take you with me, but I'll talk to your dad and help work out a better arrangement."I tried to keep my voice gentle, but Nigel had already become stubborn. When he heard what I said, his eyes widened, and he immediately turned his hostility toward Emma, who was standing nearby. "It's all because of that mute girl, right? You want to be her mommy, so you don't want me anymore!"His voice was sharp and piercing, and there was no difference compared to the time he accused me of in the past. I was disappointed, but not that disappointed.I simply let go of him and straightened my back.Charlie arrived quickly. When he got there, Nigel was still crying, and Megan was standing nearby with a dark expression. He looked at me and asked, "What happened?"I pulled Nigel in front of him. "Charlie, if you don't want to take care of your son, at

I barely managed to catch the last flight back to Oceanton.By the time I landed, it was almost midnight, so I had no choice but to pick up Snowy the next day. When I came out of the bathroom, there were already more than a dozen missed calls on my phone. They were all from Jamie.I called back, and Emma's timid voice came through from the other end.My heart filled with a soft ache. But no matter what I said, Emma kept calling for me. Sometimes she called me 'Mommy', and sometimes she called me 'Ida'.In the end, she went quiet, and Jamie took the phone."Ida, can I bring Emma to see you in the future? I always thought she would never be able to speak, but she can talk to you. I...""Of course, Jamie. I'm a mother too." As parents, we would do anything for our children. After that, I had a relatively peaceful stretch of time. Charlie also moved quickly, transferring the money into my account in batches.Because of Emma, I traveled back and forth between Oceanton and Linford.

I stopped walking, and my heart felt as if something heavy was pressing into it. It was… heartbreaking.Jamie also froze as he held Emma tightly. "Emma, what did you just say? You spoke, didn't you?"Emma ignored him and only held on to my clothes tighter. "Mommy."I pressed my lips tighter and looked down at her. "I'm not your mommy."But Emma was stubborn and kept calling me 'Mommy' repeatedly. Nigel, who was curled up in Megan's arms, flew into a rage. He ran and slammed into Emma. "This is my mommy! You can't steal her from me! This is my mommy!"The two children almost started fighting again.I quickly picked Emma up and put her back into Jamie's arms. He was still stunned, but he instinctively held her close.I sighed and held Nigel back. "Nigel, you've already chosen someone else, so I'm not your mommy anymore."Then, I looked at Emma. "Emma, I'm not your mommy either. You can call me Ida."Emma pursed her lips, but when she opened her mouth, she still called me 'Mommy'

  • I Gave Them Freedom   Chapter 7

This was the first time I was finding out Jamie had a daughter who also went to the same preschool as Nigel.I followed Jamie into the office, and a little boy's loud sobs came from inside. When I walked in, I saw Nigel crying his eyes out, while Jamie's daughter stood there wiping her tears. There was an obvious scratch on her face. When she saw Jamie, she cried even harder, her hands gesturing nonstop.I stopped. The girl was a mute.Nigel saw me too. His lips trembled, and he cried even harder, reaching out his hands for me to pick him up.I pursed my lips and looked at the teacher. "What happened here, Miss?"The teacher looked concerned and pulled me into the hallway by my sleeve. "You're Nigel's mom, right? How could you teach him to bully a girl? Especially when Emma has special needs."I understood what had happened in just a few words.Emma was a quiet girl, and she was a little insecure because she could not speak. But Nigel had splashed hot water all over her and scra
