Chapter 3

Author: Cenlyn
That night, Elias pushed open my door.

He didn't come in. He stood outside, as if he didn't want anyone to get the wrong idea.

"Vivian let you hold Caterina today. You should be satisfied."

"Yes. I'm grateful for the Donna's kindness."

Elias paused before he continued.

"Felix is about to start his lessons. Soon he'll begin training to succeed me as Don of the Voss family.

"So I don't want you showing up in front of him anymore. And don't say anything you shouldn't."

Then he looked at me like he was waiting for my reaction.

But I only nodded.

In the past, I would have sobbed and screamed. I would have begged him not to cut me off from my child completely, pouring every ounce of my desperation into the plea.

Then he could self-righteously tell me to fix my attitude, think of the children, and understand that the Don of the Voss family could never marry a nanny's daughter and make her Donna.

Now that I stayed silent, he didn't know what to do.

"If you're unhappy, you can tell me. Don't pretend.

"There are plenty of people in the family watching Felix and me, and none of them mean well. Only an heir born to the Don and Donna can command the family's respect."

I didn't argue. I even smiled.

"Yes, Don. I understand.

"I've made my peace with it. You need a Donna from the right family and an heir of unquestioned lineage. That's your duty as Don of the Voss family."

Elias stared at me, a little dazed.

He looked into my eyes as though searching for the girl I had been when we were in love.

Back then, I helped him dress every day, cooked for him, and held his hand on the terrace while we looked at the stars.

To recreate the stew his late mother used to make, I went through every note she'd left at the estate. By the time I brought back the taste of his childhood, my hands were covered in tiny knife cuts.

I'd have done anything to make him happy.

But at some point, all that was left between us was silence.

"Flora..."

His voice was soft but thick with emotion when he said my name.

I couldn't tell whether his voice held any love or guilt at all.

But in the end, he turned and left. Once again, he chose his guilt toward Vivian and his duty as Don over me.

The next day, after breakfast, Vivian summoned me to the great hall.

The Donnas of other families, along with the wives and daughters of the Voss family, sat around her.

They laughed and chatted in their lavish gowns while I bowed before them in my coarse maid's uniform.

A long time passed before Vivian pretended she'd only just noticed me and allowed me to straighten up.

"Elias went to see you last night, didn't he?"

"Yes, Donna."

Vivian raised an eyebrow.

"You should understand that a maid who meets privately with the Don commits an offense punishable by death."

I hesitated, but with everyone watching, I had no choice but to bow my head low before her.

"I'm sorry, Donna. The Don only came to tell me that Master Felix is about to begin his lessons."

Vivian gave a small snort, malice flashing in her eyes.

"Flora, I hope you'll remember your place and stop trying to seduce the Don like you used to.

"Elias only shows you any consideration because of the children."

They were the ones who'd forced me into Elias's bed, just so I'd have children for them.

But I couldn't argue.

Because Vivian was the Donna, and I was just the lowest-ranking maid on the estate.

"I'm sorry, Donna. I forgot my place."

Vivian wasn't satisfied. She smiled coldly.

"Since you know you were wrong, you deserve to be punished.

"The kitchen needs someone to do the heavy work. You can help there. And of course, you'll keep up with the gardens too."

Vivian ruled the estate as Donna, while I was only a maid who was barely allowed a glimpse of her own children.

Even though I knew she was targeting me out of spite, I couldn't fight back.

All I could do was stoop and haul heavy baskets of vegetables and fruit into the kitchen, one after another.

While Vivian enjoyed fine meals with my children, I rushed between the kitchen and the gardens without a moment's rest, choking down a cold, hard biscuit with cold water between jobs.

Late that night, when I dragged myself back to my room, Vivian was waiting outside my door.

She was in silk pajamas, looking down her nose at me.

"Tired after a long day's work?

"But that's exactly what you should be doing, because I'm the Donna of the Voss family and Elias's lawful wife.

"We're equals. I've risked my life by his side.

"You just got lucky. You happened to grow up with him, and you happened to give him two children.

"Too bad Elias and the children all belong to me now. All you're fit for is living a miserable life on this estate."

I looked at her, but in the end I said nothing. I went quietly into my room and shut the door on all her malice.

When the Voss family sent someone to ask Mom to return to the estate and care for the children, I was upstairs reading.Hugo was so deferential that he was practically groveling. Whenever he spoke to Mom, he seemed to make himself smaller without even realizing it.He was a longtime member of the estate staff and had only ever behaved that way around its true masters.Half an hour later, Mom saw Hugo out and came upstairs to find me."Hugo says the Don wants me to come back and take care of the children."As their grandmother."I hesitated for a moment, then nodded."That's good. I wouldn't trust anyone else with the kids anyway. With you there, I can stop worrying."Mom looked at me, worry filling her face."But what about you?"I closed the book and answered evenly."Once you're back, mention me to Elias now and then. Tell him how much I used to love him."When his guilt over me reaches its peak, I'll show myself. Only then can I use that guilt to reclaim my place as their mother."M

When Elias went to see the children, Felix asked him in a small voice."Daddy, why won't they let me see Mommy?"Elias answered in a strained voice."Because she isn't your real mommy."Felix's eyes went wide."Then who's my real mommy? Doesn't she want me?"Elias froze where he stood, not knowing how to begin. What could he say?Tell him about the screaming on the day she gave birth, and the trail of blood on the floor where she'd been dragged away?Or about everything she'd gone through in the years after, just to catch one glimpse of him?He didn't dare tell his son."No. She loved you so much. She tried every way she could to see you."It's my fault. I wouldn't let her see you."Felix looked at him, confused."Why?"Elias's voice was hoarse."Because I'm an idiot. I did something wrong."Felix asked another question."Then where's Mommy now?"Elias was quiet for a long time before he managed a strained smile."She's mad at me, so she went somewhere I can't find her."Felix nodded a

Marco looked grim as he brought Elias a new report."Don, I confirmed it. That day, the Donna secretly ordered everyone on the estate to withhold food and water from Flora until she starved to death."Elias gave Marco a sharp look."Are you sure?"Marco lowered his head."I'm sure. Hugo and the Donna's maid both admitted it."Elias closed his eyes, hiding every trace of emotion."Bring Vivian to me."The moment Vivian saw Elias, she burst into tears. Looking fragile and pitiful, she tried to throw her arms around him.But Elias coldly pushed her away.Vivian stared at him in disbelief."Elias, are you still angry?"I'm the Donna of the Voss family, your lawful wife. Have you forgotten everything we've been through?"I risked my life for you. I took a bullet for you! And now you're going to blame me for some lowly maid?!"Elias took a deep breath."She wasn't some lowly maid. She was Felix and Caterina's mother, and she was—"Vivian cut him off, her voice rising to a shriek."She was wh

When Mom saw me, her face lit up in surprise and joy. Then she noticed how pale I was, and she couldn't stop crying."Flora? Is it really you, Flora?"My own eyes burned with tears. I threw myself into Mom's arms, and we held each other tight."It's me, Mom. I'm home!"A long time passed before Mom's sobs finally subsided. She cupped my face and asked softly."How did you get here? Did the Don finally let you go?"At that, Mom's voice caught again."It's all my fault. If I'd never gone to work at the Voss estate in the first place, you'd never have gone through any of this."Watching them take your children, watching the Donna go after you, it broke my heart. But I was just a servant. I couldn't do anything for you."And I know the only reason you never left the Voss estate was me."I'm sorry, Flora. I'm so sorry..."I gently wiped away Mom's tears."Don't cry, Mom. I've never blamed you."This is all their fault. I'm going to make them pay!"Mom's eyes went wide."But they're the Don

Vivian stared blankly at Elias."You're the Don of the Voss family. How can you say something so beneath you?"Elias glared at her."And what about you? You're the Donna of the Voss family. Why was Flora the one person you couldn't tolerate?!"Vivian's eyes went wide."You think I did this?"Elias's voice was cold."The Voss estate went 100 years without a single major fire, yet that shed burned down right after you had its door nailed shut."Even your excuse for nailing it shut was based on a fabricated accusation. How am I supposed to believe you?"Vivian opened and closed her mouth several times, then forced out a strained explanation."As Donna, I was only trying to uphold order and decency on the estate."Elias gripped the photo tightly."Over a few rumors, you had her sealed inside that shed."What if there hadn't been a fire? What were you going to do? Let her die of thirst or starvation in there?!"A flicker of guilt passed through Vivian's eyes, but she still clung to her prid

Elias called in the family's private jet and was back at the estate that same night. But it was too late. All that remained was the acrid smell of smoke and the charred wreck of the shed. When Elias returned, the servants on the estate turned pale and didn't dare speak. Finally, Hugo Moretti, the butler, stepped forward hesitantly and spoke in a low voice."Don, the fire was too intense. There's nothing left inside."Elias whipped out his gun and pointed it at Hugo's head, his voice frighteningly cold."Why didn't anyone get Flora out? You should all know the Voss family has no use for dead weight."Hugo shook from head to toe, tears running down his weathered face."Please, please don't kill me."It's not that we didn't try. It's, it's that the Donna had us nail the shed door shut beforehand. By the time the fire started, it was too late to get it open."Elias stood frozen for a long while. Then, very slowly, he asked."Nailed it shut? Why?"Hugo kept his head down and answered quietl
