Chapter 4

Author: Year on Year
"20,000?" I repeated.

"Not enough?" Lukas frowned. "Then how much do you want?"

I looked at the woman. She was still leaning against him, though she'd stopped crying. She watched me nervously, with a flicker of hope in her eyes.

"Forget it. I'm not deleting the recording."

His expression darkened. "Sienna, don't push it. I'm trying to be reasonable here. Don't make this harder than it needs to be."

"Reasonable?" I repeated, turning toward the door.

"Lukas!" The woman was starting to panic. "You can't let her leave! What if she sends that recording to someone? My parents will find out! They'll kill me! You promised you'd protect me!"

Lukas stayed where he was, looking torn. My hand was already on the doorknob.

"Wait," he called after me.

I didn't turn around.

"Sienna, please. I'm begging you." His voice softened. "Just delete it, okay? This is my fault, not hers. She's young. She doesn't know any better. I'm the one who gave in to temptation. If you want to blame someone, blame me. Just leave her out of it."

I turned back. He stood there with the woman beside him, their hands clasped together.

"She doesn't know any better? She seemed to know exactly what she was doing a minute ago. She knew you had a girlfriend, and she still had no problem telling me how much you two love each other."

Lukas had nothing to say to that. The woman lowered her head and fell silent.

"She doesn't know any better, but you do," I said, looking straight at him. "So what's your excuse for cheating?"

He wouldn't look at me. He just stared at the floor.

"Lukas." The woman tugged at his sleeve again. "Make her delete it. Please. What am I supposed to do if she doesn't?"

He looked up at me, and something in his eyes had changed completely.

"Sienna." His voice dropped. "Delete the recording. If you won't, I'll have to take your phone."

I stared at him without moving, and he took a step toward me. I slipped my hand into my pocket and gripped my phone.

"Go ahead," I said. "It won't do you any good."

He stopped.

"I've already scheduled a message to go out. In two hours, if I don't cancel it, the recording gets sent to everyone on my contact list."

All the color drained from Lukas' face. The woman went pale, too.

"Are you out of your mind?" he demanded, pointing a trembling finger at me.

I said nothing.

He stood there, opening and closing his mouth, unable to get a word out. The woman clutched his arm so tightly that her nails dug through his sleeve. He didn't even seem to notice.

For a few seconds, the living room was silent.

"100,000 dollars," he blurted out.

I looked at him.

"100,000 dollars. Delete the recording, and I'll transfer you the money right now."

I didn't answer.

"I don't have that much on hand, but I can get it." He was speaking faster now.

"I've got 80,000 dollars in my account. I can borrow the other 20,000 dollars and get you the full amount by the end of the day. Just delete the recording, and we can put this whole thing behind us. Okay?"

The woman tugged at his sleeve and looked up at him. She clearly wasn't happy about it, but she kept quiet.

"100,000 dollars. Transfer it now."

Lukas hesitated for a second, then quickly pulled out his phone and started the transfer.

I took out mine and brought up my payment QR code.

His hands were shaking so badly that it took him several tries to scan it. He tapped in the amount, then looked up at me.

"Done," he said. "Check your phone."

I glanced down. A notification from my bank confirmed that I'd received exactly 100,000 dollars.

"One more thing," I said. "I want it in writing."

"What do you mean?"

"I want a signed statement saying you gave me the 100,000 dollars willingly as compensation for our breakup. Include how we were involved, the fact that you cheated on me, and your signature and fingerprint."

Ben Asher paused. "But his mother's in the hospital."I said nothing."Things have been a mess at home these past few days. That woman slit her wrists, and her parents came over demanding that Lukas take responsibility."Lukas has locked himself in his room and won't come out. His mother got so worked up that her blood pressure shot up. She was admitted to the hospital yesterday."I listened in silence."Sienna, I'm not calling to ask for the money back. Keep the 100,000 dollars. You're entitled to it. I just wanted to ask if you could delete the recording and stop it from spreading."His mother's been sitting in her hospital bed, reading all those messages on her phone and crying. She keeps saying how humiliating it is, that she's too ashamed to face anyone."I held the phone and looked out the window."I know it's a lot to ask," Ben continued, his voice growing quieter. "But you were together for eight years, and I always treated you well, didn't I? Could you please…""Mr. A

I opened my eyes and looked at the moon. Tomorrow would be a brand new day. I would keep living. I would eat, sleep, go to work, and find a way to move forward.Eight years was a long time, but I still had the rest of my life ahead of me. I would meet other people. There would be new stories, new possibilities, a different future. But Lukas wouldn't be part of it. Not anymore. My phone buzzed again. I didn't check it. Whoever it was, I didn't feel like dealing with them today. It could wait until tomorrow.I didn't leave the apartment the next day. Or the day after that. On the fourth afternoon, I was sitting on the couch, staring into space, when my phone rang.It wasn't an unfamiliar number this time. It was Mom. I stared at the screen for a long time before answering."Sienna." She sounded a little tense. "Your dad wanted me to call and see how you've been doing.""I'm fine," I said."Well…" She paused. "Lukas' mother called me yesterday."I didn't say anything."She told

"Sienna, I know Lukas was wrong. But he's still young and doesn't know any better. Could you forgive him just this once? I'm begging you. That woman slit her wrists, and now her family is causing a scene."Everything's a mess here. Please delete the recording and stop spreading it around. Don't ruin Lukas' life over this."I stared at Mia's message for a long time. Then I typed a reply. "Mrs. Asher, he's 26. He's not a child."I hit send. Then I blocked her too.Gina came out of the kitchen carrying a bowl of soup and set it on the coffee table. "Eat something first. You can deal with all that later."I sat down, picked up the bowl, and took a spoonful. It was warm and slightly sweet."Is it good?" she asked.I nodded. She watched me eat for a while before asking gently, "Sienna, what are you going to do now?""I don't know," I said. "Just keep going, I guess."She looked surprised for a moment, then smiled. "Fair enough. That's what matters most."I finished the soup and se

Gina's eyes widened."I went to his apartment yesterday and caught them together," I said. "So I recorded everything and made him pay me 100,000 dollars to end things."She opened her mouth, but nothing came out."Then I sent the recording to everyone," I continued. "He told me earlier that the other woman slit her wrists. They took her to the hospital. She's still alive."Gina stared at me in shock. "Sienna…" Her voice trembled."Did I go too far?" I asked. She looked at me for a long moment without saying anything. Then she reached over and pulled me into a hug."No," she said. "You didn't go too far. Not at all."I said nothing, resting my head against her shoulder."He's the one who went too far," she said. "He cheated on you. He lied to you. And you had to walk in and see it for yourself. You didn't do anything wrong. You were just protecting yourself."I closed my eyes."Sienna, it's okay to cry," she said. "You don't have to hold it in around me."I shook my head. "I

I didn't say anything, and the woman hung up.I sat on the couch with my phone in my hand, staring out at the night. The rain seemed to have stopped. Droplets still clung to the window, blurring the light from the streetlamps outside.I looked down at my phone. An unfamiliar number sat in my call history. The call had lasted a little over seven minutes.I blocked that number too. Then I set my phone aside, lay down, and closed my eyes. My thoughts were still a mess, but I felt a little better than before. At least it didn't hurt quite as much.I didn't know how long it took, but eventually, I fell asleep. By the time I woke up, it was morning. Sunlight streamed through the window and fell across my face, bright enough to make me squint.I sat up. There was a blanket over me, though I couldn't remember putting it there. I must have pulled it over myself last night.I picked up my phone and checked the time. It was 8:05 am. The recording had already been sent.I opened my messagin

I heard a quiet sob on the other end."He said he doesn't have any money left," she whispered. "He told me to figure it out myself. Said there was nothing he could do."I listened without saying a word."He said you took all of his savings, and he's too embarrassed to ask his family for money. He told me to borrow some from my friends first." Her voice grew even quieter. "But my friends all called me a homewrecker. They said I deserved this and refused to lend me anything."I leaned back against the couch and stared at the ceiling."Sienna?" she tried again. "Please, I'm begging you. Can you give me the money back? I swear I'll never see him again. I promise.""You're pregnant with his baby, and he told you to figure it out yourself?"She didn't answer."Funny. He was awfully protective of you earlier. He kept telling me you were young and didn't know any better. That I should blame him, not you. I actually thought he cared about you."She broke down crying, struggling to get
