Chapter 3

Author: Like a Dream
I returned home alone and switched on the lights. The first thing I saw was the framed photo sitting on the entryway cabinet. It hit me suddenly that this might have been the only photo of us together.

Chloe did not like taking pictures. More precisely, she did not like taking pictures with me.

During our six months together, not once did I appear in the posts on her social media.

Actually, I had. One time on her birthday, I booked the most luxurious rooftop restaurant in the city for her celebration. For the first time, she posted a photo of us together. However, she deleted it without hesitation less than half an hour later.

Her friends quickly messaged me, asking if I had ruined her birthday or upset her.

When I asked her about it, she answered nonchalantly, “Gavin saw the photo. I didn’t want him to feel bad, so I deleted it.”

I had looked at her indifferent expression as my hands trembled. I forced myself to stay calm and asked, “I’m your boyfriend now. Why do you care so much about someone else’s feelings?”

She fell silent for a moment, then softened, grabbing my sleeve playfully. “Alright, alright. I just didn’t think it through. I’ll repost it later. Don’t be so petty.”

Later, it seemed like she simply forgot about it. I did not want to fight with her over Gavin, so I never brought it up again. I simply printed the photo and placed it in the new home I had prepared for her.

Yet it seemed I was the only one who cared about it. It was just like our three years together. It had always been a one-man performance.

I glanced at a message from my mentor. He was still urging me to reconsider going abroad, saying my spot was still reserved.

I held the frame and looked at that photo again and again. In the photo, I was looking at her, while she looked at the moon. The moon on the sea was but a reflection of the sky; the one before my eyes was not meant to be mine.

I should have understood that long ago.

Just after replying to my mentor, I heard movement at the door. A familiar figure suddenly rushed into my arms. My body instinctively wanted to hug her back, but the emptiness inside me left me unable to lift my hands.

I stood there calmly and asked, “What happened?”

Her voice trembled against my chest. “Nothing. The business deal didn’t go well.”

She held me tightly. Her tone carried both grievance and unwillingness. “When are we getting married? Let’s set the date soon!”

Her warmth pressed against me through the fabric, and with it came the voice she could never hide. ‘I don’t believe he really doesn’t care. Do I have to make him watch me marry someone else before he regrets it?’

A sharp pain twisted in my chest. I took a deep breath and placed my hands on her shoulders, gently pushing her away. I looked her in the eye and asked calmly, “Chloe, do you really want to marry me? Are you marrying me because you love me?”

Even though I already knew the answer, asking the question felt like tearing my own wound open again and again. I told myself that if she denied it, I would let her go. I would set her free for the person she truly loved. I would bring everything between us to a final end.

Chloe’s gaze wavered. Her expression stiffened slightly. She forced a smile and replied with a helpless tone, “Don’t overthink it. Of course, I do.”

‘He’s so annoying. He’s always asking the same thing. Of course, I want to marry the person I love most. If Gavin wasn’t so stubborn… I would never have agreed…’

I released my grip on her shoulders and let out a quiet laugh. “Alright. Pick a date. I’ll prepare for the wedding.”

Her eyes flickered. It was as though she wanted to say something but swallowed it back.

I looked at her calmly, waiting for the pain in my chest to settle. Since she wanted a wedding, I would give her the grandest one of all. For her, and for the person she truly loved.

Chloe was still frozen in place, not fully reacting when she heard this. Gavin panicked.“What apartment? That new place was supposed to be mine, no? Owen said he’d give it to me if I married Chloe. He lied to me?”The moment he said that, the bridesmaids, who had just been on his side, exploded in outrage.“What do you mean? You only married Chloe for an apartment?”“So you were never sincere at all?”“You’re disgusting! And you still think you can compare yourself to Owen? At least he had genuine feelings for Chloe!”The accusations grew louder and louder. Gavin, standing under everyone’s contemptuous gaze, snapped in fury. “So what if I did? If it weren't for the house, why would I marry her? What’s so great about her anyway?“Only an idiot like Owen would want a woman like her. If you ask me, she should be thanking me for marrying her!"He suddenly screamed as he doubled over, clutching his stomach. The crowd scattered in a panic. The overturned wedding cake lay smashed on

The officiant had already moved on to the next segment. “Now, let’s see… What's the most touching thing the groom has ever done for the bride?”As he spoke, a video appeared on the big screen. The moment my younger, unfamiliar face appeared, I, along with the entire room, froze.Jason grinned proudly. “I swapped this in myself! I want all these blind people to see clearly who her real savior is!”The footage looked like street surveillance. Everyone was confused. In the video, I happened to pass by the scene of a car accident. Seeing what had happened, I immediately ran over. Ignoring the risk that the vehicle could explode at any moment, I forced myself forward and dragged the unconscious girl out.Just a few yards away, a loud blast erupted behind us. A wave of heat hit me, and I rolled into the roadside grass with her.An ambulance arrived shortly after and took us both away.“This… This is the video from my accident…” Chloe murmured as disbelief filled her eyes. She turned t

Jason followed the crowd as they moved toward the room. He continued gossiping with me with his earphones on, “Your ex really thinks that guy is you. You've blocked her number, and she still hasn’t caught on. That just proves it, you really went all-in as a simp back then.”I let out a bitter laugh but could not refute a single word.Chloe led the bridesmaids forward and shoved the door open. “Owen! You'd better explain yourself!”She had gathered all her anger, ready to unleash it, but the words died in her throat. The person standing in front of her was not me. It was a man she knew far too well.Gavin Brooks.“Why are you here?” Chloe’s expression froze in shock.Gavin stood awkwardly in place with hesitation written across his face. “Chloe, there’s something I forgot to tell you. Can we talk privately first?”Someone in the crowd recognized him and muttered, “Isn’t that the bride’s ex? Is he here to crash the wedding?”Chloe ignored it. Her expression shifted as she stared

When I arrived at the airport, a video call suddenly popped up on my phone. It was from Jason Scott. He had said earlier that he was going to the wedding just to watch the drama unfold, and now, he was already at the venue, streaming everything to me live. The moment I accepted the call, I saw the hall filled with pale pink magnolia flowers. For a second, I felt a strange sense of disorientation. It was almost as though I was not standing in an airport at all, but inside the wedding I had meticulously prepared. The camera shook slightly as Jason stood up and walked forward.“Come on. Let’s go see your ex.”As the camera moved, Chloe came into view. We had barely seen each other since our last argument. She had tried to smooth things over, but her expression had also turned cold after sensing my distance. We ended up in that awkward, undefined state, right up until the eve of the wedding. If she had gone home that night, she might even have run into the real estate agent bringing

When Chloe realized I had not gone to see her even after several days, she called me. “What’s your problem? It was just a slap. Now you’re giving me the silent treatment?”Perhaps she was used to me always lowering my head first. This time, when I did not reach out to apologize, she actually got anxious. She had always been like this, casually humiliating and belittling me, then acting as though nothing had ever happened.I did not respond. Instead, I sent her the revised wedding plan.“Been busy with the wedding lately. There are a lot of details I need to finalize. Take a look and see if anything doesn’t suit you.”There was a pause on the other end. After a moment, Chloe’s awkward voice came through. “It’s fine, I guess. Nothing special. If there’s anything to change, I’ll tell you later.”She seemed to take my actions as me backing down, and her tone softened, no longer as sharp as before. “Come pick me up from work later. I don’t feel like taking the subway.”I hummed in ack
