Chapter 2

Author: Greenie
She thought she had Gavin’s heart.

What she did not understand was that men like Gavin never paid for emotion.

They only invested where they saw value.

So Nora’s little performance did not make me jealous.

It only bored me.

On the drive back, Gavin finally spoke.

His voice was casual, almost careless.

“So? Nora’s been good, hasn’t she?”

I said nothing.

I waited for him to continue.

He did.

“I don’t need love. I need novelty. She’s young. As long as she listens and doesn’t make trouble, that’s enough.”

He laid out his rules for relationships as if he were discussing an investment portfolio.

To Gavin, I was not a wife.

I was a business partner who occupied an important position.

And one who could be replaced at any time.

Nora, on the other hand, was just a passing indulgence.

I leaned against the cold window, and the last of my hope finally disappeared.

This marriage.

This life.

It was even harder to bear than I had imagined.

By the time we arrived at my parents’ house, my mother’s birthday dinner had already started.

The dining table was covered with dishes she had spent all day preparing, but without one of the people she had been waiting for, the room felt strangely subdued.

The moment Gavin walked through the door, the careless air he had carried at the hospital vanished.

He put on the perfect expression instead.

Polite. Humble. Charming.

A faint floral perfume clung to him.

It was subtle, but I caught it immediately.

He walked over to my parents, greeted them warmly, and handed my mother the gift he had prepared.

The wrapping was elegant.

The price tag was obvious.

Just like the flawless image he always showed the world.

When my father saw Gavin, his tired face immediately broke into a smile.

“It’s good you made it,” he said. “You work so hard, but you still have to take care of yourself.”

He pulled out a chair for Gavin, poured him a drink, and fussed over him with an eagerness that was impossible to miss.

My family was not poor.

But next to the Hart Group, we were still the smaller party.

For years, my father had walked carefully around Gavin, afraid of saying the wrong thing or displeasing him.

Every time I saw my father force a smile in front of Gavin, something inside me twisted.

Tonight, that feeling was worse than ever.

It felt like something was lodged in my throat.

And suddenly, I understood.

Gavin was not only my husband.

He was also the person with the power to decide how far my family could go.

Throughout dinner, Gavin sat in the seat of honor, but his mind was nowhere in the room.

His phone kept vibrating.

Each time, he picked it up immediately, his fingers flying over the screen as he typed.

Every now and then, he gave my parents a distracted reply, but his eyes never settled.

To him, this family dinner was just another obligation he had to make a brief appearance at.

He did not notice my mother’s expression shift from hopeful to disappointed.

He did not notice my father’s smile slowly stiffen.

He ignored all of us and disappeared into his phone.

The delayed birthday dinner ended with the pale glow of Gavin’s screen and the quiet understanding between my parents and me.

Late that night, Gavin shut himself in his study, claiming he had work to do.

After washing up, I lay down on the cold bed and tried to push every absurd thing that had happened that day out of my head.

Then my phone lit up.

A text from an unknown number shattered the fragile calm.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me open it.

“I’m sorry, Lily. Gavin found me. He paid me to leave you.”

The two short sentences hit me like a blow.

Gavin sat at the far end of the boardroom table, watching me walk toward the dais. The man who had once carried himself with such arrogance now looked hollowed out.Helpless.Defeated.Without expression, I addressed the room.“Under the new shareholders’ resolution, Gavin Hart and every executive appointed by him are relieved of their duties effective immediately.”My gaze swept across the senior management team. The people who had once been fiercely loyal to Gavin sat in stunned silence.Only then did Gavin understand.I had never been weak.I had only been waiting for the right moment. He lurched to his feet and rushed toward me, reaching for my hand.“Lily! You can’t do this to me!”His voice was raw with panic.“We were married. Do you really feel nothing for me at all?”His once-handsome, proud face was bloodshot and wrecked.I pulled my hand away in disgust. Then I took a photo from my bag.It showed Gavin in his car years ago, carefully pressing a Band-Aid ont

Gavin looked at my calm face and assumed I had finally given up.To him, he had finally gotten rid of a problem. He gathered the papers with a satisfied smile, never realizing that one clause in the agreement required him to personally certify that the offshore accounts and investment vehicles listed under Nora’s name had never held marital assets. He signed without reading it closely. That single signature tied him directly to the shell companies he had used to hide money. The highest price is always paid by the person who thinks they will get away without paying anything at all. What Gavin had signed was not freedom. It was the document that would lead him straight into disaster.Once the divorce papers were signed, Gavin believed I was finally out of the picture. He had no idea that agreement was the first disaster he had created with his own hands.Just one week later, Hart Group was in crisis.Tax authorities, securities regulators, and financial-crimes investigators al

The crack of the slap rang sharply through the hospital room.Nora’s sweet, innocent face twisted at once.“Are you crazy?!” She clutched her cheek and stared at me in disbelief. “What did I do? What right do you have to hit me?”I looked at her coldly. The chill in my eyes made her take a step back.“You’d better pray my father is all right,” I said. “Because if anything happens to him, I’ll make sure you pay for it.”Just then, Gavin rushed in after hearing the commotion. The moment he saw Nora’s reddened cheek, his face darkened. He pulled her behind him and glared at me.“Lily! Have you lost your mind?”He was still protecting her.Protecting that vicious woman.“She’s just young and immature. Did you really have to hit her that hard?”His voice was full of accusation. In that moment, I finally understood. He had never seen me as his wife. And the woman who had just reached for my father’s oxygen line was, to him, merely “young and immature.”He had crossed every l

Nora clung shyly to Gavin’s side, accepting the looks of envy and confusion from the guests.I stood quietly in a corner with a glass of red wine in my hand, wearing the flawless smile expected of Mrs. Hart.I watched it all without the slightest ripple of emotion. This was just another of Gavin’s public humiliations. And Nora was only another tool in his hand. When every eye in the ballroom shifted toward me, waiting for me to make a scene, I stepped forward instead.I lifted my glass gracefully toward Nora.“Ms. Quinn is young and accomplished. She takes so much off Mr. Hart’s plate—what a blessing for the Hart family.”I smiled.“This toast is for you.”My voice was neither too loud nor too soft.It carried just far enough for everyone nearby to hear.Nora blinked in surprise. Then color rose in her cheeks. She thought I was furious, but she had no choice but to lift her own glass and play along. What she did not know was that I had already planted a seed of doubt in h

“Let me teach you something, Nora.“With a man like Gavin Hart, love and children are never the bargaining chips you think they are.”I rose from my seat, letting my gaze sweep coldly over her and the women she had brought with her.“Now leave. All of you.”My voice stayed calm.“Or I’ll call the police and report you for trespassing.”Nora was clearly caught off guard by the force of my response. The smug smile on her face froze. In the end, she left with her friends, her expression twisted with anger and resentment. But Nora’s visit gave me a new perspective on everything that had happened. So I asked my ex to meet me.He looked worn down when he arrived at the café.As he sat across from me, guilt and conflict filled his eyes.I got straight to the point.“You’re Nora Quinn’s cousin, aren’t you?”His head snapped up.He stared at me in shock.
