Chapter 2

Author: Memory Lane
The summer air was stifling. Sweat was already clinging to my skin by the time I slipped into the driver's seat.

My mouth, however, was parched. I had to swallow hard several times before my breathing finally steadied.

How dare Edward do this to me!

We had been dating for three years, and we were about to get married tomorrow. Yet he actually went behind my back to fool around with his so- called "buddy" to the point she ended up in the hospital.

I slammed my fist into the steering wheel.

Before long, my phone chimed. Edward had sent me several texts.

"You were being unreasonable earlier. Winnie was just joking with you. Must you say such harsh words?

"Fortunately, Winnie is kind enough not to hold it against you. Let's just put this behind us.

"You can head back home first. Tell your parents and relatives that the wedding will be pushed back a day—the wedding dress needs to be altered."

I stared at the last text in disbelief before chuckling coldly. How come I didn't know that the wedding dress needed to be altered when I was the bride?

Somehow, I ended up opening the Instagram group chat Edward had added me into tonight. I found Winnie's profile picture and clicked into it.

Her profile was public, and she had just posted a new video five minutes ago.

In it, Edward's wrists were tied with a black tie behind his back as he knelt before Winnie. Like a queen, she was sitting on the main seat with other men surrounding her.

I turned the volume up and heard him chuckling helplessly before barking once at her.

Winnie said, "Some people couldn't take a joke and ended up ruining the whole party. What a shame! Luckily, this pup knows better. He postponed the wedding to make it up for me, and we'll party again tomorrow night."

She clicked her tongue before continuing, "I'll forgive him then. After all, I'm too softhearted as his owner."

Edward and Winnie's conversation was under the comments section of the post.

He commented, "You little devil. This should be enough now, right? I must've owed you in my past life or something."

Winnie replied, "What nonsense are you talking about, pup? You still owe me in this lifetime too. Have you forgotten the time you got into a fight when you were younger and got your clothes torn? You ran to my house and stripped me off my clothes to put them on yourself."

Edward commented, "And you've got the nerve to bring that up? If it weren't for you scaring them with a toad, they wouldn't have blocked you in. I was only trying to save you!"

Winnie's next comment read, "It's only natural for a pet dog to save its master. Are you trying to rebel here?"

I couldn't help but tighten my fists as I read about them reminiscing in their past memories.

I didn't even want to rewatch the video a second time, afraid that I might just throw up in my car.

I slammed the accelerator.

The moment I got home, I opened Edward's computer.

He was well-known as the monastic miracle doctor with the perfect reputation as an elite. He was meticulous, serious and steady, and was practically married to his work.

What Edward and Winnie did tonight was beyond his "serious and steady" reputation. However, there was something else I couldn't wrap my head around.

He devoted himself to his work in the hospital during our entire relationship, refusing to even take a day off for my birthday.

Once, I couldn't get out of bed due to high fever. Yet he left me the second his phone rang, rushing off to the ER.

So where did Edward find time to fool around with Winnie for "two whole days"?

I quickly opened the digital calendar on his desktop. Checking back, I only found one schedule in the entire month of January—Hordole Medical Summit month.

Hordole seemed to be Winnie's hometown.

I suddenly remembered that Edward had been away the entire month on "business".

Something in my mind snapped.

I quickly searched it up, only to realize there were at least 200 entries labelled "Hordale" over the past year—summits, consultations, overnight ER shifts.

Which meant every time Edward told me he was away in Hordale for work, he was actually with Winnie.

Was he even hiding those sex toys in his backpack whenever he attended his so-called overnight ER shifts?

Feeling resigned, I leaned in even closer into Christian's arms. "What are you yelling for? He's my childhood friend—we've known each other for over 20 years," I said to Edward.Christian found it amusing as well. "Must you be so worked up, Dr. Fowler? Sarah and I go way back. So what if I touched her? We even used to shower together back when we were younger…"Edward's fist went flying before Christian could even finish his sentence.Fortunately, Christian knew some boxing. He pulled me back and dodged it easily, the fist cutting through the air right in front of us.Clutching his chest dramatically, he said, "You didn't tell me this gig came with hazard pay. I almost got disfigured, and my face is the most important part of my career!"Rolling my eyes, I slipped out of Christian's hold. "Alright, thanks. Next time my company rolls out a new product, you'll be the first one I call. It will be five times the usual rate."He replied, "Deal! I'll take my leave for now—my girlfriend

Edward and I sat across from each other in the cafe.He was about to take off his face mask, but when several women who passed by started giving him second glances, he lowered his head and kept it on.There was a time where Edward was the golden boy of the medical field. Many would approach him to ask for advice or get a photo. Whenever he won an award, the reporters would chase him down at the hospital, desperate for an interview.Back then, he even found it annoying, saying that it got in the way of his work. But now, that was no longer a problem.Edward was expelled from the hospital the day after the wedding. Rumor has it he stormed into the director's office with a resignation letter in hand, only to find the director of Hordale Central Hospital sitting there. On the desk was a copy of Winnie's medical report that recorded her laceration injury.Shame swallowed Edward whole at that instant, and he fled. He knew then that the Fowlers' five generations of medical prestige had

I pointed at the crowd disdainfully. "Haven't you realized that none of my relatives are here? That's because I told them the wedding's cancelled, not postponed. "Let me tell you this, Edward. The engagement between the Fowlers and the Hudsons are now annulled! From now on, you can spend the rest of your life with your dear buddy!"…My friends brought me out for a barbecue after we let our anger out. But as we ate, they couldn't help but start cursing again."That son of a bitch Edward actually kept up his act for three whole years!""Even though we've never seen him for much, he looked so prim and proper every time he showed up, like the rising star in the medical field he was. Who knew he was playing around like that in private?""He's even calling her his 'tomboy bestie'—that's disgusting!""No, you've got it wrong. He didn't just keep his act for three years, but over 20 years. Haven't you seen his interviews? The monastic miracle doctor, Edward Fowler! Monastic? Hah!"Th

Until now, Winnie was still insisting that I was twisting things.I couldn't help but chuckle. "Are you only buddies for good? I thought you're his tutor? But as his tutor, you ought to work on your stamina. Your student is at the prime of his life. If you land yourself in the hospital so easily, won't it affect your lessons?"I then snapped my fingers again, and the surveillance footage of the fitting room vanished from the screen. In its place was a medical report from Hordale Central Hospital, with Winnie's name clearly printed on it. Under "reason for visit", it said, "Excessive sexual activity leading to vaginal tearing. Recommended two weeks of rest. No intercourse during recovery."I sighed, while my best friend, Christian Sanders, tossed a clear bag containing sex toys onto the stage.I said, "The doctor clearly told you not to have sex, yet you barged into the marital home belonging to me and Edward, and tore through these toys in my bed. Not only did you land yourself ba

On the large screen, Winnie was wearing my custom made wedding dress in the fitting room.Behind her, Edward tied her lace and personally helped her into the veil.He then walked around to the front, giving her a once-over before smirking. "Would you look at that? You'd pass for the real thing wearing a wedding dress."Winnie tilted her head up smugly. "Of course! Who do you think I am? I'm your owner, pup!"Edward hissed before reaching out to grab her chin. He said, "How many times do I have to tell you not to call me 'pup' when in public? I'm a medical doctor, for god's sake!""Where else if not in public—in bed?" Winnie teased.Edward's expression immediately shifted. He'd been trying hard not to glance at her neckline, but his gaze slowly began to drop as his breath quickened.By now, Edward had lost it. He lunged forward to pull off the power cord, but my friends blocked his way.The surveillance footage continued to play.I didn't need to turn around to know exactly wha

I woke up naturally on the wedding day itself. As I reached the hotel, the person in charge hurried over. "I'm sorry, Ms. Hudson. Mr. Fowler said…they'll take some photos first since you're not here yet."I glanced inside and spotted Winnie dressed in a brand new wedding gown, sporting full bridal makeup. Her arm was hooked through Edward's as they took the wedding photos.Even though he was complaining, he remained cooperative when the photographer asked them to strike a pose. He turned to face her, got down on one knee, and took her hand. When Edward stood up again, he lost his balance and almost knocked over a flower arrangement. The photographer chuckled. "Is the groom nervous?"Winnie poked Edward's shoulders and said, "Look at you, what a wimp! Don't worry, I'm always by your side."The crowd laughed, and they finally noticed me.Winnie waved at me. "I've tried it out for you, Sarah. The aisle's nice and smooth!"She then casually patted Edward on the shoulders. "Alright
