Chapter 2

Author: Double Edge
Bruce froze for a moment, a flicker of hesitation passing through his eyes.

But Carmen immediately jumped out, jabbing her finger at me and shrieking, "You even have the nerve to impersonate the new branch manager? Everyone working here knows the new branch manager is arriving today!

"What, you read a couple of girlboss revenge novels and now you think you can come swaggering into real life acting all high and mighty?"

She shot Bruce a simpering look and said, "Mr. Farrell, don't fall for her bluff. Nowadays, women of her age are sneaky like that. They read a couple of clapback stories online and think they can pass themselves off as executives.

"If she really were the branch manager sent from headquarters, why didn't Mr. Mahoney come with her? I'm telling you, she's just stalling for time because she knows she's been caught."

The surrounding colleagues chimed in one after another.

"Yeah, she didn't even think this lie through. Would the new branch manager dress so shabbily and take the regular elevator?"

"Young people nowadays are just plain crazy. They'll say anything just to avoid getting fired."

Carmen grew more smug as she spoke, her voice getting even louder.

"And besides, so what if the new branch manager really does show up today? Mr. Farrell here is the chairman's nephew. This branch is basically his domain—even the new branch manager will have to answer to him!"

These words were spoken with outrageous arrogance, yet not a single one of the over 100 employees present dared to speak up in rebuttal.

Instead, everyone turned to Bruce with deference and fawning reverence.

Bruce, thoroughly puffed up by Carmen's flatter, was brimming with smug satisfaction.

He walked up to me, looking down from his lofty height.

"Miss, are you listening? Don't think those 'workplace tyranny' tricks you found on the internet actually work in the real world. As someone with a bit more experience, I'm going to do you a favor and teach you a lesson today–strictly out of the goodness of my heart."

Bruce pulled out his phone and sneered. "I'm calling Mr. Mahoney right now. If the facts don't match your story, not only will you be kicked out of the company, but I'll also call the police and report you for fraud."

He dialed the number in front of everyone and deliberately put the call on speaker. His tone instantly shifted to one of excessive politeness.

"Hello, Mr. Mahoney. This is Bruce Farrell, the branch's assistant manager. May I know where you are now?"

Derek Mahoney's slightly anxious voice came through from the other end.

"Mr. Farrell, I'm on my way. There's a bit of traffic."

Bruce immediately seized the opportunity to report the situation as if claiming credit.

"Oh, Mr. Mahoney, you won't believe what's happened. Some con artist showed up here today. She's been causing a scene and has had the audacity to impersonate the new branch manager. I've got her detained right now."

Derek's tone changed instantly. "What did you say? I'll be there right away! Before I arrive, no one is to do anything rash!"

The call ended with a sharp click.

Bruce put away his phone and looked at me scornfully.

"You hear that? The new branch manager is due any second. A fraud like you actually thinks you can pull this off?"

I took one look at his smug, self-satisfied expression and let out a cold laugh.

"You don't believe me, do you? Fine, I'll show you some proof."

I pulled the official transfer document from my bag and snapped it down onto the desk beside me.

"You say you're the chairman's nephew?" I locked eyes with him, my tone icy. "Well, isn't that a coincidence—I'm the chairman's daughter. So, how is it that I never knew my father, Francis Norton, had a relative as pathetic as you hiding away as a branch assistant manager?"

"Bruce and Carmen have been arrested. The evidence of their embezzlement and their affairs has been fully exposed. You're not a slut. You didn't do anything wrong. They did. Them and that rotten, corrupt management."Anna stared blankly at the document bearing the red seal. In an instant, the guarded look in her eyes crumbled completely. She took the documents with trembling hands. Then, she dropped into a crouch, hugging her knees as she burst into wracking sobs.I walked over and gently put my arms around her frail, thin shoulders.Over the next two days, I didn't rest. Dragging my injured body, I traveled across the city's slums and remote outskirts.I found Caroline, once the branch's top designer, holed up in a grimy internet cafe. She was doing cheap power-leveling work for whoever would pay.I found Shannon Cobb, once a finance clerk, scrubbing dishes in the back of some greasy diner. And I stopped Olivia Yoder, who used to work in the HR department, in the waiting room o

My voice trembled slightly with fury."They did nothing wrong! They were just doing their jobs diligently, trying to make a living in this city through their own hard work! Yet, they were branded as homewreckers and vixens, driven to depression, forced to change careers, and even to leave this city entirely!"I turned around and fixed my burning gaze on the employees below, their heads hanging low."I asked you just now—what were you doing while they were being bullied by Carmen, publicly humiliated, and thrown out by security?"You stood there and watched. You laughed along. You trampled on their dignity just to protect your own paychecks. How do you even sleep at night?"Under the weight of my raw, bleeding accusations, someone in the room finally broke. A handful of female employees who used to work with those women clamped their hands over their mouths and broke down in quiet sobs. The male employees who had stood by and done nothing also bowed their heads in shame."As of t

Carmen let out an agonized scream and rolled frantically on the floor, clutching her leg.Patrick had gone completely berserk. He raised the folding chair high and brought it down again and again in a crazed, relentless barrage on the two figures on the floor.Bruce was battered until his head was split open and bleeding. Carmen's expensive designer suit was torn to shreds. The two of them crawled on the ground like dogs trying to dodge, their wails and pleas for mercy blending into one chaotic din.Blood splattered onto the carpet. The surrounding employees shrieked in terror and scrambled out of the way, yet not a single one stepped forward to intervene.I stood just seven feet away, watching coldly as the whole ugly spectacle unfolded. Seeing them rip each other apart, all their pettiness laid bare, I felt not even a flicker of sympathy. Not until Bruce was beaten to the point of gasping for his last ragged breaths and Carmen was barely clinging to life did I finally give the s

I pulled a tissue from the desk and wiped the blood from the corner of my mouth with an almost casual indifference. Then, I walked right up to Bruce.I stared down at him, my gaze dripping with absolute scorn."Bruce, didn't you say you're the chairman's nephew? I gave it some careful thought in the elevator just now, and it turns out my father doesn't have a relative matching your description."So, what's it going to be? You want me to call you 'cuz,' or would you rather explain your so-called family connections to the police down at the station?"Bruce shuddered violently, the stench of his own terror filling the air as he wet himself. He threw himself onto his knees, his body folding in half as he groveled."Ms. Norton, forgive me! I was a blind, arrogant fool! Please have mercy—treat me like the nothing I am and spare me!""Spare you?" I let out a cold chuckle, then turned to Derek and extended my hand.He understood instantly, placing a thick, heavy black document folder in

Derek's roar exploded across the main office area like a clap of thunder.A dead silence fell over the room, so absolute that the sound of a pin hitting the floor would have echoed like a gunshot. Everyone froze in place as if someone had hit the pause button.Bruce, whose face had been dripping with sycophantic flattery just moments before, felt his smile instantly congeal. His portly frame shuddered violently. He stepped forward, sweat pouring down his face, his voice trembling as he made one last desperate attempt."M-Mr. Mahoney, what are you talking about? Ms. Norton isn't here. Look, a con woman did show up here today, but we've already—""Con woman?" Derek shot upright and seized Bruce by the collar in a death grip, yanking his nearly 200-pound body up onto its tiptoes.Derek was normally the most mild-mannered, buttoned-up guy one'd ever meet. But right now, his eyes were bloodshot, and his whole body was shaking."Are you blind or stupid?" he roared with absolute fury

Bruce had spent years running this branch like his own personal dictatorship. Everyone was too scared of him being "the chairman's nephew" to challenge him, and some even saw this as a chance to prove their loyalty.Under this oppressive pressure, several security guards and a few bootlicking employees immediately lunged at me like wolves.I was outnumbered and overpowered. Within seconds, several beefy men had my arms wrenched behind me, pinning me face-down against a nearby desk. I couldn't move an inch.Clutching her stomach, Carmen scrambled up from the floor and stormed over with an ugly snarl. Then, she drove two sharp kicks into my shin."Go on, run! Let's see you kick me now!" she hissed through gritted teeth.Pressed down on the desk, I stared coldly at Bruce and Carmen, burning every single one of their faces into my memory.Just as Carmen was about to continue her assault, the receptionist came rushing in from outside."Mr. Farrell, Mr. Mahoney has arrived downstairs
