Chapter 4

作者: Fifteen
After leaving the Landon residence, I went straight back to where I was staying. This time, I packed even faster and more thoroughly than I had the night before.

I didn't have many clothes to begin with. Aside from a few sets of work clothes I wore regularly, there wasn't much worth keeping. I didn't hesitate over the things on the table that were connected to Suzanne.

I took the framed photo of us off the wall and placed it face down on the table.

The drawer was still stuffed with little souvenirs she had brought back from business trips, along with a few notes she had casually written for me.

I looked through them one by one, but I felt strangely calm.

Only then did I realize how difficult it really was to completely pull myself out of a relationship that had lasted for so many years. Even so, throwing these things away was unexpectedly easy.

The sky gradually darkened.

I had only packed halfway when a message from Ivan came in.

He texted, "Chad, have you gone back? Things have gotten crazy on the mountain again. Suzanne intends to stay in the same room as Finley for the night!"

I opened the message and slowly read it.

According to the customs in our village, if a woman accepted a man's wedding wine, then took him to pray at the church and stayed overnight in the same room with him, the marriage was considered official.

Nowadays, hardly anyone openly mentioned such rules. But at the moment, Suzanne's friends were egging them on in their Instagram posts.

They said somewhat jokingly that since she'd already drunk the wine and gone to the church, they might as well go all the way and complete the final step.

Ivan cursed furiously in his messages and asked whether I wanted him to go over right then and wreck the whole place.

I stared at those few lines for a long time.

In the end, I replied with only two words. "Got it."

Then, I set my phone aside.

At this point, I couldn't even bring myself to get angry anymore. I was simply relieved. I was relieved that I'd finally stopped placing my hopes in whether Suzanne would come back to me.

The night stretched on.

The courtyard gate never opened. All that remained outside was the sound of wind and rain.

I packed the last of my belongings into my suitcase and pulled the zipper shut. Then, I sent a message home to let my family know I was safe.

While I waited for the car, I turned around and took one last look at the home where I had lived for so many years.

Suddenly, I remembered the basement we had lived in many years ago, when we had first left our hometown. The corners of the walls had been damp, and the winters had been so cold that I couldn't sleep.

Suzanne had held me in her arms and told me that one day, she would return to our hometown with me gloriously. She would let everyone know that I was the one she would most proudly call her husband.

Back then, I had truly believed her.

Looking back now, perhaps she hadn't been lying when she said those things. She had simply changed later.

Everything had changed, and nothing was the same anymore. And I had been lost in my own dream for far too long, waking up far too late.

I took the bottle of wine from my bag.

It had already started raining outside. The rain fell in a fine, steady drizzle, tapping against the window lattice.

I slowly uncorked the bottle.

The fragrance of the wine immediately spread through the room. It rushed into my nose along with the damp scent of rain.

This should have been the moment I had looked forward to most in my entire life. But now, all I could smell was irony.

Without hesitation, I picked up the bottle and slowly poured the wine onto the ground.

Just then, a delicate hand suddenly grabbed my wrist.

...

Meanwhile, Suzanne was in the room.

At first, it had only been some people egging them on. They pushed her and Finley toward a room and said that since she had accepted the wine, she should at least take responsibility for Finley.

Suzanne had initially said that they shouldn't take the joke too far.

But Finley soon took advantage of his drunkenness and pretended to be frightened. He asked her to go inside and keep him company for a while.

Outside the room, the roaring laughter and teasing continued.

The dim light cast hazy shadows, while the smell of alcohol mingled with a sweet fragrance. In an atmosphere like that, many boundaries that should have been firmly maintained suddenly became blurred.

In the end, Suzanne didn't push him away.

She also didn't see the message her friend had sent.

"Suzanne, hurry back! Chad is going to marry someone else!"

The wedding day drew closer and closer. My family and the Sheare family were both so busy that we barely had time to catch our breath.Meanwhile, Suzanne seemed to have trapped herself and was unable to move forward. She stopped coming to see me and stopped causing a scene outside my home, but she grew more withdrawn with each passing day.Later, I learned that during that time, she kept thinking about the past over and over again.Over the years, she had grown so accustomed to my kindness that she had taken everything for granted. Only after I was truly gone did she realize how large the emptiness I had left behind really was.Tilda eventually fell silent too. It wasn't that she didn't know how much hardship I had endured over the years, nor was she unaware of how much I had done to support the family.People were often like that. They failed to cherish what they had while they had it and only realized what was missing after they truly lost it.But by then, it was too late to r

Two weeks before my wedding, I ran into Suzanne alone for the first time.On that day, Ivan and I were checking the fabrics, wedding favors, and gifts for my upcoming wedding. There was a lot to take care of, but I felt completely at ease. I even found myself quietly looking forward to the wedding."Chad."I looked up at the sound of Suzanne's voice and saw her.Compared to the last time I saw her, she had clearly lost weight and seemed much more gloomy. She walked up to me and blocked my path. Her voice was hoarse as she said, "I want to talk to you."I looked at her. "Go ahead."She probably hadn't expected me to be so calm. After a slight pause, she finally poured out everything she wanted to say."I've ended things with Finley. I won't have anything to do with him anymore. I'm begging you. Please give me one more chance. From now on, I'll do whatever you say."I waited quietly until she finished. Then, I asked one question. "Why?"She froze.I looked at her and said

After my engagement to Taylor was finalized, my family quickly began preparing for the wedding.Meanwhile, Suzanne seemed to have suddenly gone crazy. She repeatedly asked people about me and waited outside my house several times, hoping to see me. But in the end, she was turned away every time.Unwilling to give up, she went to Ivan. However, he was thoroughly disgusted with her. He either sent her away or mocked her coldly. He refused to pass along even a single word for her.The more she was rejected, the more she couldn't stop thinking about the years she had spent with me.She remembered those first few years after we left home and moved elsewhere. We had lived in the cheapest basement we could find. It was damp in summer and freezing in winter. Afraid that her stomach problems would flare up, I'd always pushed the only thick blanket toward her.She remembered the hardest days of starting our business, when I ran around with her looking for potential clients. I'd stayed up u

After those words fell, the elders signaled the matchmaker to continue with the ceremony. In front of everyone, Taylor presented the wedding gifts and said solemnly, "I can't make up for all the hurt Chadwick has suffered in the past. But if he takes me as his wife, I'll do my best to make sure he suffers a little less from now on."I don't care about anything else. All I care about is whether he's willing to start a new life with me from now on."Suzanne lost control. She tried to rush inside, but several people by the gate immediately grabbed her and held her back. All she could do was call my name again and again from behind the crowd."Chad! Chadwick!" Suzanne shouted.I turned around and looked at her. There was no resentment or hatred in my eyes. All that remained was an unwavering and distant look that reminded her to maintain the boundaries between us.Then, I turned around and took Taylor's hand.Only at that moment did Suzanne finally understand that I hadn't been try

The moment those words left Ivan's mouth, Suzanne stood frozen like a statue.I had kept that bottle of wine for 28 years and had never let anyone touch it. She knew better than anyone what it meant.Ivan looked at her and said slowly, "If one realizes that they've entrusted their most precious thing to the wrong person once, they won't repeat that mistake a second time."With that, he turned and walked back into my home, cutting off her chance to beg to see me.That evening, Finley went to see Suzanne again. He brought medicine and food while still wearing that gentle, considerate, understanding expression. In a tender voice, he asked if she was still upset over what had happened with me.If he'd done this in the past, Suzanne wouldn't have thought he was being thoughtful. But now, the moment he appeared, he reminded her of the wine she had drunk that day, the visit to the Shrine of Aphrodite later that night, and the loss of boundaries that had occurred in that room.Noticing

It was just beginning to dawn when the car came to pick me up.The mountain road was still wet from the rain. I loaded my luggage into the car and took one last look at the house where I had lived for so many years. Then, I turned and got in.When I got home, Mom pushed a bowl of warm soup toward me. "You should have something to eat first."I lowered my head and took a couple of sips. Only then did the tight feeling that had been lodged in my throat all night slowly ease.No one at home asked what had happened the night before. They only looked at the luggage I had brought back and my exhausted face after a sleepless night. Without exchanging a word, they understood everything. My uncle sat beside me and spoke in a steady voice. "Whatever happens from here, you've got us behind you. You don't have to be worried."I nodded. My eyes stung, but I held back the tears. On the other end, Suzanne didn't return until nearly noon. She hadn't even had time to see that message before anot
