Chapter 2

Cutie Kitty
Lucas scowled when I still did not budge. "Scarlett, look at me. I'm ruined. Don't you even care enough to comfort me?"

Lily tried to play the peacemaker, though her eyes flickered with impatience. "Maybe Scarlett is just in shock, Lucas. It's a lot to take in."

I made way more money than Lucas did, and I had always been generous. Whenever he asked for cash, I handed it over without second thoughts as long as it wasn't completely ridiculous.

Maybe he figured asking for my entire bank account straight up was too big of a leap, so he did not suspect a thing. He just sighed dramatically. "Look, Lily saved my life. She pulled me out of that wreckage. The least you can do is show some appreciation."

He pointed at my bag. "Since you didn't bring a gift, write her a check."

"Oh no, I couldn't possibly take your money," Lily stammered, putting on a modest show.

"I insist," Lucas said softly, "She's giving it to you, so you take it."

It was a total play-by-play of my past life.

Back then, the second Lucas said those words, I wrote Lily a check for five thousand dollars on the spot. I believed saving a life was priceless. Over the years, I constantly bought her high-end makeup and luxury skincare sets just to express my gratitude.

I remembered how her eyes used to glint whenever she accepted my gifts. At the time, I thought she was just being shy. Now I realized she was mocking my utter stupidity.

This time, I stood frozen. Annoyed by my hesitation, Lucas reached out to grab my phone off the bedside table.

He knew my passcode. In my past life, he secretly transferred thousands of dollars to Lily behind my back. Every single time I confronted him, he shut me down by throwing his debt of gratitude in my face.

I snatched my phone back before his fingers touched it and stepped out of his reach. "I don't mind writing a check to say thanks. But first, I have a few questions."

Lucas blinked, completely thrown off. He was not used to me pushing back when money was involved. Lily froze, too.

I turned my eyes straight to Lily. "So, Lucas told me the car door was jammed shut, but you pried it open with your bare hands?"

That was the story Lucas fed me back then. The details were full of holes. In my past life, whenever I asked for clarification, Lucas flew into a rage. He accused me of being heartless, screaming that he almost died while I was obsessing over useless details.

Eventually, I became too terrified to ask. I stopped bringing up the crash altogether just to keep from triggering his pain.

Lily’s eyes darted around the room. "I can explain the details to you in private, Scarlett. We really shouldn't bring up the crash in front of Lucas. He’s already traumatized, and I don't want to trigger him."

A cold laugh escaped my throat. "Are you worried about triggering him, or do you just need time to get your stories straight?"

Both of their faces turned pale, then dark.

"What’s that supposed to mean?" they snapped in unison.

Their timing was seamless. It was that exact teamwork that kept me fooled for forty years, leaving me broke and dead by the end of it.

I swallowed the bitter rage in my throat and forced a calm smile. "If a grown man couldn't kick the door open, how did a petite girl like you pry it loose? You don't exactly look like a powerlifter.

"Besides, forcing open crushed metal would tear your hands to pieces. The cuts on your palms don't look like scrap metal wounds. They look like shallow razor slits."

My voice dropped, cold and sharp. "And one more thing. The crash happened two days ago. Why did you just show up now? Word on the street is you got into a car accident two days ago, too. Isn't that a crazy coincidence?"

"That’s enough!" Lucas cut me off with a furious roar before I could finish.

They were still young, and Lily's nerve was already cracking. Tears welled in her eyes as she pulled a helpless, victimized act. "Lucas, I had no idea Scarlett would suspect me like this. If she's going to treat me like a criminal, I should just go."

I looked down at Lucas. The last bit of color drained from his skin in a heartbeat, leaving him ghost-white."Lily!" he snapped, his voice trembling as he practically spat the name through his teeth. The sudden shout startled the entire coffee shop, drawing every pair of eyes in our direction.Lily clearly had not expected to run into Lucas here. Her face darkened instantly. "What are you doing here?"The guy beside her frowned, looking annoyed. "Lily, who’s this guy?""I...""He's my uncle!" Lily cut in before Lucas could open his mouth. She gave Lucas a pointed look, silently begging him to play along. However, this time, Lucas did not fall into line.He exploded right there in front of everyone. "Your uncle? Is that what I am? Your uncle broke his leg trying to mess around with you! Your uncle was so terrified of you suffering that he gave you every cent he owned, only for you to destroy his life! Your uncle was manipulated into having a kid with you!"Panic hit Lily hard.

Just a few days later, Lucas took the initiative and offered to transfer his apartment's deed into my name.…Wondering what kind of game he was playing, I agreed to meet him at a local coffee shop after he reached out that evening, rolling himself inside in his wheelchair. He was significantly thinner than before, looking completely hollow and exhausted. Seeing him look like total trash brought a quiet wave of relief.I expected him to beg for mercy or try to stand up for Lily again. Instead, his very first sentence caught me entirely off guard."Scarlett, you came back too, didn't you?" Lucas asked, his face deadly pale as he stared at me.I raised an eyebrow, staying completely silent.Tears welled up in his bloodshot eyes. "I had this nightmare. In it, you treated me so well. You were completely devoted, patient with all my flaws and outbursts."But before I died, I left a will giving all our assets to Lily. You were left with nothing, and your life was a living hell."Hea

Which meant while the two of us were tearing each other apart out here, Lucas was actively reaching out to Lily for help. Only after she blew him off did he decide to act weak and crawl back to me.He really had it all calculated. Before I could even respond, Leo, who had been hiding in Lucas' arms like a coward moments ago, threw a full-blown tantrum. Hearing that Lucas was ditching his mother, he scrambled free, trembling with rage as he pointed a finger directly at Lucas' face."You're a terrible dad! You ignore me all the time, and now you want me to accept this woman as my mom? No way!"He swung his hand toward me, but the second I hit him with a deadly glare, he pulled his hand back, terrified.Instantly, Leo started pounding Lucas' thighs again. Lucas' leg hadn't healed yet, and he winced in agony, trying to soothe the kid and get him to stop.Instead of listening, the kid got energized by Lucas' pain and began kicking him directly in his injured leg.The absurd sight bro

Just like that, the kid spilled the truth. With Leo’s revelation, the whole truth hit the air, leaving no room for doubt. The surrounding neighbors shot sympathetic looks in my direction. I didn't care in the slightest. The moment I decided to tear off Lucas' mask, I had already prepared myself for the worst-case scenario. No matter how messy this got, it was infinitely better than my past life, where I was stripped of my savings and died with my eyes wide open, swallowed by regret. An outspoken neighbor pointed a finger straight at Brenda's nose, fuming. "You people are unbelievable! Your son does something this filthy, and you still have the nerve to strut around making noise? Lying to everyone and humiliating yourself in the process!""Wait, I recognize this guy!" another neighbor chimed in, "I've seen him bringing a strange woman into our apartment complex before. This kid has to be hers.""Right! I actually caught him in the security office a while back asking them to delete

My parents refused to believe it. Their faces turned pale with rage, their lips trembling with fury. "You're lying through your teeth!" my dad barked.Brenda smirked, practically reveling in the chaos. "Lying? You tell me then! My son has been married to your daughter for six years, and they don’t have a single child to show for it. If there isn't something wrong with her, why else wouldn't she be pregnant?"The crowd of neighbors started whispering back and forth again."Six years without a kid? That’s a little weird.""Honestly, if she really can't have kids, you can't blame the guy for wanting a family."Their murmurs only fueled Brenda's confidence. She squeezed out a few fake tears, turning to the crowd with a dramatic sob. "Kevin and I have always dreamed of having grandkids. Even before they got married, we were already looking forward to helping raise them. But who could’ve guessed our daughter-in-law was infertile? Do you have any idea how heartbreaking that was for us?

The kid’s voice echoed straight up the stairwell, hit every wall, and landed clear as day in front of everyone.People blinked back at him in total confusion. My parents looked just as lost.My eyes snapped over to my in-laws. Brenda and Kevin averted their gaze instantly, guilt written all over their faces. It hit me right then. They knew about this kid all along. No wonder they stopped nagging Lucas and me to start a family years ago. I thought they were just trying to spare Lucas’ feelings after his accident. It turned out that they already had a grandkid tucked away in the shadows.Lucas went dead pale. His lips parted, but not a single sound came out.Brenda grabbed the boy by his wrist, tugging him toward the exit. "You've got the wrong person, sweetie. Who are you calling Daddy?"She was panicking. If she admitted the truth, it would prove Lucas had been cheating. The moment that happened, they wouldn't get a dime of my money in the divorce. However, a six-year-old did n
