Chapter 5

Cutie Kitty
After Lucas told Lily to keep her eyes on the road, she brushed him off and leaned in closer to tease him anyway.

While they were messing around in the front seat, the car swerved off course and slammed straight into a roadside tree.

In that moment, everything finally clicked: I understood why Lucas had finalized our divorce so early, yet never officially married Lily.

Lily was clearly playing him, but Lucas was totally blind to it. Or maybe he knew all along and was just completely hooked on the illusion.

"The DNA testing will take some time," Mr. Fletcher added over the line, "We should have the official results back in about three days."

I nodded. Just as I was about to hang up, another thought crossed my mind. "I need you to track down a child for me, too."

Doing the math, their kid would have been born right around this time, probably three or four years old by now. In my past life, Lucas used to make up all sorts of excuses every weekend to roll himself out of the house alone. He was definitely going to visit their son.

I gave Mr. Fletcher the locations Lucas frequented most, then swung by a clinic to get a full physical before freezing every single bank account under my name.

This time around, everything was just beginning. I was healthy, completely free from the heart failure caused by grinding through three jobs in my past life, and Lucas hadn't managed to bleed my savings dry yet.

That evening, I went home by myself for the very first time, completely dropping my so-called wife duties. Sensing that something was off, Lucas called my phone. The second his name popped up on my screen, I rejected the call.

A few minutes later, he posted a long rant on social media.

He whined endlessly about how much he had sacrificed for me, claiming that now that he was paralyzed because of me, I was heartlessly abandoning him. To milk as much pity as possible, he even uploaded his official medical diagnosis along with a tragic, exhausted photo of himself sitting in a wheelchair.

What he did not realize was that Lily's reflection was captured clear as day in the polished metal armrest of the wheelchair.

If you zoomed in close on one of the pictures, you could even catch Lily leaning over to kiss his cheek.

He was demanding my money and cursing my name, while showering another woman with all his love and my hard-earned cash. Lucas really thought he was the master puppeteer, playing everyone for fools.

The comment section was full of people grabbing their popcorn. Nobody noticed the slip-up in the photo. Instead, everyone offered him sweet words of comfort while tearing me apart with the filthiest insults, calling me a heartless monster.

I ignored the noise completely and blocked Lucas' number.

Over the next two days, life went on as usual. However, Lucas seemed to go completely off the deep end, blasting me online every single day. He even posted screenshots showing I had blocked him, playing the innocent victim and claiming I had a guilty conscience. Clueless mutual friends quickly took his side, flooding my inbox to lecture me about giving him a second chance.

I didn't bother offering a single explanation. I just quietly waited for the lab results on the third day.

To my absolute relief, the lab confirmed the match that afternoon, and Mr. Fletcher tracked down the child's whereabouts on the exact same day.

…

Before I could even go looking for Lucas, he showed up at my front door early that morning, either because he had run out of cash for the hospital or realized things were spiraling out of his control.

He didn't come alone. Standing right behind him were his furious parents, along with my own mom and dad.

Unlike my in-laws, who were practically barking with self-righteous anger, my parents stood behind them looking thoroughly guilty and hesitant.

"You guys take a good look at your daughter!" my mother-in-law, Brenda Whitmore, spat the second the door opened, saliva flying everywhere, "Is this how she treats my son?

"What sickens me even more is that she went behind my son's back, filed for a secret divorce, and threw him away the second he got hurt!"

A cold laugh bubbled up in my chest as I processed her words.

Lucas really outdid himself with this twisted narrative.

Since marriage registry records weren't open to the public, none of them actually knew the real truth.

My parents lowered their voices, trying to keep the peace. "It's not our place to meddle in their marriage. Since things have gotten this far, we're willing to pay financial compensation to make up for it."

I looked down at Lucas. The last bit of color drained from his skin in a heartbeat, leaving him ghost-white."Lily!" he snapped, his voice trembling as he practically spat the name through his teeth. The sudden shout startled the entire coffee shop, drawing every pair of eyes in our direction.Lily clearly had not expected to run into Lucas here. Her face darkened instantly. "What are you doing here?"The guy beside her frowned, looking annoyed. "Lily, who’s this guy?""I...""He's my uncle!" Lily cut in before Lucas could open his mouth. She gave Lucas a pointed look, silently begging him to play along. However, this time, Lucas did not fall into line.He exploded right there in front of everyone. "Your uncle? Is that what I am? Your uncle broke his leg trying to mess around with you! Your uncle was so terrified of you suffering that he gave you every cent he owned, only for you to destroy his life! Your uncle was manipulated into having a kid with you!"Panic hit Lily hard.

Just a few days later, Lucas took the initiative and offered to transfer his apartment's deed into my name.…Wondering what kind of game he was playing, I agreed to meet him at a local coffee shop after he reached out that evening, rolling himself inside in his wheelchair. He was significantly thinner than before, looking completely hollow and exhausted. Seeing him look like total trash brought a quiet wave of relief.I expected him to beg for mercy or try to stand up for Lily again. Instead, his very first sentence caught me entirely off guard."Scarlett, you came back too, didn't you?" Lucas asked, his face deadly pale as he stared at me.I raised an eyebrow, staying completely silent.Tears welled up in his bloodshot eyes. "I had this nightmare. In it, you treated me so well. You were completely devoted, patient with all my flaws and outbursts."But before I died, I left a will giving all our assets to Lily. You were left with nothing, and your life was a living hell."Hea

Which meant while the two of us were tearing each other apart out here, Lucas was actively reaching out to Lily for help. Only after she blew him off did he decide to act weak and crawl back to me.He really had it all calculated. Before I could even respond, Leo, who had been hiding in Lucas' arms like a coward moments ago, threw a full-blown tantrum. Hearing that Lucas was ditching his mother, he scrambled free, trembling with rage as he pointed a finger directly at Lucas' face."You're a terrible dad! You ignore me all the time, and now you want me to accept this woman as my mom? No way!"He swung his hand toward me, but the second I hit him with a deadly glare, he pulled his hand back, terrified.Instantly, Leo started pounding Lucas' thighs again. Lucas' leg hadn't healed yet, and he winced in agony, trying to soothe the kid and get him to stop.Instead of listening, the kid got energized by Lucas' pain and began kicking him directly in his injured leg.The absurd sight bro

Just like that, the kid spilled the truth. With Leo’s revelation, the whole truth hit the air, leaving no room for doubt. The surrounding neighbors shot sympathetic looks in my direction. I didn't care in the slightest. The moment I decided to tear off Lucas' mask, I had already prepared myself for the worst-case scenario. No matter how messy this got, it was infinitely better than my past life, where I was stripped of my savings and died with my eyes wide open, swallowed by regret. An outspoken neighbor pointed a finger straight at Brenda's nose, fuming. "You people are unbelievable! Your son does something this filthy, and you still have the nerve to strut around making noise? Lying to everyone and humiliating yourself in the process!""Wait, I recognize this guy!" another neighbor chimed in, "I've seen him bringing a strange woman into our apartment complex before. This kid has to be hers.""Right! I actually caught him in the security office a while back asking them to delete

My parents refused to believe it. Their faces turned pale with rage, their lips trembling with fury. "You're lying through your teeth!" my dad barked.Brenda smirked, practically reveling in the chaos. "Lying? You tell me then! My son has been married to your daughter for six years, and they don’t have a single child to show for it. If there isn't something wrong with her, why else wouldn't she be pregnant?"The crowd of neighbors started whispering back and forth again."Six years without a kid? That’s a little weird.""Honestly, if she really can't have kids, you can't blame the guy for wanting a family."Their murmurs only fueled Brenda's confidence. She squeezed out a few fake tears, turning to the crowd with a dramatic sob. "Kevin and I have always dreamed of having grandkids. Even before they got married, we were already looking forward to helping raise them. But who could’ve guessed our daughter-in-law was infertile? Do you have any idea how heartbreaking that was for us?

The kid’s voice echoed straight up the stairwell, hit every wall, and landed clear as day in front of everyone.People blinked back at him in total confusion. My parents looked just as lost.My eyes snapped over to my in-laws. Brenda and Kevin averted their gaze instantly, guilt written all over their faces. It hit me right then. They knew about this kid all along. No wonder they stopped nagging Lucas and me to start a family years ago. I thought they were just trying to spare Lucas’ feelings after his accident. It turned out that they already had a grandkid tucked away in the shadows.Lucas went dead pale. His lips parted, but not a single sound came out.Brenda grabbed the boy by his wrist, tugging him toward the exit. "You've got the wrong person, sweetie. Who are you calling Daddy?"She was panicking. If she admitted the truth, it would prove Lucas had been cheating. The moment that happened, they wouldn't get a dime of my money in the divorce. However, a six-year-old did n
