RAIN
Thankfully, the first week of school went by without a lot of visits from Derrick. He bothered me once on Wednesday and Friday but he was mostly busy planning the back to school party. Whispers this morning say it was a great party. This morning, I didn't see them at all. I made sure I was in class before the bell and after all my classes, I blended in with the crowd and slipped into the next class. Living life like a ninja is something I've become used to. Eva waves me over when she sees me. She's really taking this friend thing seriously. I'm embarrassed to say I like it. I've never had someone volunteer to be my friend. I've always been the girl in rich schools that she can't afford and I sadly got in Derrick's bad book early in my high school career so people stayed away from me. "Hey, you. How was your weekend?" Eva asks. I take a seat and start taking my lunch out. "It was quiet. I did chores around the house and my homework." "That's it? That's all you did during the weekend?" "Pretty much yeah." "That's sad Rain. Gimme your number, I'll save you from yourself." I laugh and give her my number. Josh, a member of this esteemed table, joins the table with a crumpled flier that he straightens out and puts in the center of the table. "It is finally time." He says. Buck is the first person to take the flier, he reads it briefly then passes it to Eva who puts it between us so I can read. It's a flier for senior prank night. "Yesssss, I finally get to experience this." Eva says. "Why is it a big deal? They have it every year." Eva looks at me in surprise. She's not the only one, other people at the table look at me like I'm strange. Buck shakes his head at me before addressing Eva. "Rain has her head in a rock. She doesn't know what's so special about this night babe." "Senior prank night is the one night the school doesn't give a shit what we do. We can do whatever and we won't be punished." "That sounds like chaos." I say. "It is. The pranks are always so funny and teachers are always on their toes. The pranks only targets teachers and the principal." No wonder I don't see most teachers in school the morning after prank night. They stay home to avoid the chaos they know students have unleashed. "And it's really special because it's just seniors. Anyone who's not a senior that gets caught ends up in deep shit." Eva continues. "Urrgh. She's saying all the boring things about prank night." Buck says and positions himself to give me all the details. "Prank night, is in two phases. Phase one is where you lay out your pranks for the teachers and mark the place off in Neon signs so no one sets it off before time. Phase two is where the real fun is. The building is locked so no one escapes, the light goes off so you can't see anything and we all prank each other." I didn't know about that. "Really, that's the fun part for you?" "Yeah, we've been planning this since freshman year and we all have our targets. Those rich spoiled kids are going to get it." I guess I see the appeal. I would very much like to get back at Derrick but I'm not that bold. "You should come." Eva says. "No, it sounds like a nightmare. I don't want to be anywhere near there." "Come on, don't be a chicken. Come! Come! Come!" Eva chants. Her chants attract the rest of the table to our conversation and they join in the chant. People notice and start looking our way. I want to hide and bury myself so no one ever sees me again. This is embarrassing. My eyes meet Xavier's and the look I see in his eyes is disapproving. His disapproval fuels me. I'll attend. I'll even think of a few pranks to get back at him and his friends. "Fine, I'll attend." They all cheer and start giving me suggestions for pranks. They all know the people I have problems with in school so their suggestions are tailored to Xavier and his friends. ***** The week is tortuously slow. Everyday seems to drag on. It's as if the universe knew I was anticipating Sunday night and refused to give me the win. Derrick is back to messing with me every day. I take all his insults and shoves and missing textbooks and wet gym clothes. Whenever he does something to me, I just close my eyes and imagine Monday morning and how his face will look when my prank goes off. On Sunday morning, dad is free for the first time in a while. We have breakfast together and play games. He doesn't leave once it's noon like I thought he would, instead he calls me out to the garage and we work on his car and talk. "Why don't we go see a movie tonight?" He says. Who is this man and what did he do to my busy dad? The father I know doesn't have the time to see a movie with me. I almost say yes before I remember prank night. On one hand, I get to spend time with my father. One the other hand, I dish out a little of what Derrick has been doing to me to him. Dad notices my silence and slides out from under the hood of the car. "You have plans?" "Yeah, but I'll cancel. It's no big deal." "What? Of course it's a big deal, you never make plans." Ouch. "Maybe, but I'd rather watch a movie with you. You never have time anymore." He sighs and stands up. "I know I've been working too hard and I promise I'll cut back but you have to live your life. You can't wait around for me to get off work. Tell me, where are you going to?" "School." I say slowly. I never learned to lie to my father. He's very open minded and doesn't get upset by most things he should be upset over. "School on a Sunday night?" He says eyeing me curiously. "It's senior prank night." "Oh, I get it. You have some scores to settle?" "Something like that." "Well tell me all about it, I want to know if you got my talents." I tell him about my ideas and he helps me polish some of the ideas. My father really is the best.XAVIER I've not been to school in a week and I have not spoken to my friends since the incident. It's too silent but I'm not going to reach out. We're all wrong, if this is the end of the friendship then I'm okay with it. Every morning I wake up and remember that Rain skipped town and her dad won't tell me where she is, my anger increases. I can find her if I really want to but what's the point? She hates me. Things between us will never be okay. I should accept that.I go downstairs and to the dinning room to see what's for breakfast. My father is already there and he's reading on his iPad.One big surprise in all this is that my father has left me alone. He came back on the third day and even though he knew I haven't been to school, he didn't ask me anything about it, didn't even mention it."Good morning." I greet. He nods and keeps reading his paper. I load my plate with food and sit down to eat. He calmly puts his iPad on the table and turns to me."Took you a week, I had my mo
RAINFor the next two nights, I do nothing but cry. I had to watch my father's face drop in sadness as I told him about the car. He wasn't even sad about the car he spent months saving to buy, he was more worried about me and it made it worse. Those assholes took the joy of my birthday from me and they weren't even sorry. I hate all of them but I hate Xavier more for insisting to stay out of it, even at that point. I knew he didn't love me but we were cool. Sometimes we talked about the most random things and I expected him to at least tell them they were out of line. There's a knock on the door and I quickly wipe my tears. I really should stop crying about Xavier and his friends. The door is pushed open and my grandmother walks in. She looks uneasy. When I showed up with my dad, they were shocked and if had been up to her, they would have sent me away but my grandfather stepped in and they agreed to keep me till I finish from highschool."Your father called, he couldn't reach you.
XAVIER I walk out of the principals office and head straight for the coaches office. Today is practice, we just didn't go. Those two didn't go because they were too tired from being vandals and I didn't go because since Rain told me to leave her life, I've found it impossible to find interest in anything.Coaches sees me approaching and frowns. "Is this the time you're coming for practice?" "I'm not here for practice coach, I want Derrick off the team.""What? Why? He's really good.""You don't want to say no to me right now, coach."He wants to say one more thing but he shuts his mouth and nods."Text him right now and tell him he's off the team. No reason, no explanation, just off the team."I walk away without waiting for a reply. That's the thing with adults who sell their conscience for money. They'll do anything to keep the money coming. Coach and the principal both know that even though my father wants to know everything I'm doing, he'll cut them down if he feels that they d
XAVIER "So this is the reason you asked me to drop everything and come here?"Derrick laughs while Camden watches me quietly. He hears the fury in my voice while Derrick is oblivious "Yeah, Lacey texted and said she was coming. I had a feeling she'd come to my house first."I take deep breaths, trying to stop myself from bashing his head on the pavement. How dare he hurt her and have the guts to make jokes about it. It was never supposed to go this far. "Why didn't you tell me you were planning this?"He shrugs. "You've been uninterested in everything. I didn't want to tell you about it so you could 'hmm' and walk away without talking to me."I want to say a lot of things. I want to do a lot of things but I control myself. Rain is nothing to me. I shouldn't ruin years of friendship because of her."Call off the police." I finally say."What? Don't you see the damage to made to my car?"I look at the car and some of my anger ebbs away. She did good, she got some hits in before I too
RAINEva is standing in front of me waving her hands but I can't hear her. Buck and Chad are at the car and there accessing it. This doesn't feel real. It's like an out of body experience. Eva starts shaking me and I come back to reality."No!" I scream and fall to the ground.I think back to all the night shifts and double shifts and jumping from one job to another just to be able to afford this car and those evil people ruined it in one afternoon. I wipe my tears and stand up. Eva is still talking but I can't hear her. She holds me and I break away from her grip. I turn and walk away. I walk to where they usually park and their spots are empty. They left. If they think this will be end silently like with my clothes then they're mistaking. I walk into the administrative building and go straight to the principals office. Eva is yelling for me to calm down and think things through but I don't hear her.I walk past the secretary and push the door open. The principal is startled at my e
RAIN"Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday dear Princess, happy birthday to you."I'm smiling and bowing as my dad approaches with a plate loaded with waffles and a candle on top. The waffles smell divine and the rich maple syrup drizzled on it makes it better. "Make a wish Princess."I close my eyes and wish that things will be better at school. I open them again and blow out the candle."You're so grown up Princess, your mother would be so proud."I sigh and give him a hug. "I miss her too." I say."Enough of this drabness, you turn 17 today. You should be very excited.""I'm literally the last person in my class to turn 17, trust me, it's not that great.""Whatever. It's great because I say it is."I take a seat at the table with my birthday breakfast while dad fiddles with his phone. He's trying to hide the worried look on his face but I see it."Everything okay?" I ask.He looks up and smiles. "Yeah, everything is perfect." His phone starts ringing and h
