Chapter 3

Author: Midnight Visitor
When Emma saw me after such a long period of separation, her first reaction was not joy. Instead, she looked afraid like Stacy did.

Emma hid behind John and pointed at me while shouting, “Mom! Uncle John! Didn’t you say Dad was already dead? Why’s he here? Today’s my birthday, so did he come on purpose to ruin it?!”

She pouted and stared at me with resentment filling her eyes.

“You’re a bad dad! You’re not welcome here, so leave!”

My heart felt as if it were being battered. The pain made me think it would suddenly stop beating.

Had they spent the last few years telling my daughter that I was dead?

I forced back my tears and smiled stiffly.

I handed the strawberry cake I was holding to Stacy.

“I know it’s Emma’s birthday, and I just wanted to see her once more. I’ve seen her now, so I won’t stay any longer.”

After speaking, I straightened my back, which was close to hunching, and left without looking back.

I dragged my heavy body and went to the hospital again.

The attending doctor frowned deeply while looking at my latest test results.

“Mr. Wells, your condition isn’t very promising, and we can only try to slow the progression of your illness.”

I listened calmly, but inside, I was mostly numb.

Perhaps after pretending to be dead for three years, I had grown numb to death itself.

“I understand, doctor.”

When the company settled its final payment with me, I did not transfer every cent to Stacy like I used to.

Since she had deceived me, I wanted to keep this money for myself.

I would use it to buy myself a little more time to struggle on.

I was discussing a specific treatment plan with the doctor when someone suddenly kicked the ward door open.

Stacy stormed in angrily, and without a word, she grabbed me and dragged me into the hallway.

Her grip was shockingly strong, and my wrist throbbed with pain.

“Sam, how dare you show up at the hospital?!” she shouted while pointing at my face.

“If you hadn’t suddenly gone home, would Emma have been frightened into a flare-up?!”

“She’s running a high fever, and it won’t come down! The doctor said it’s very dangerous! Are you happy now?!”

My first thought was that my daughter was sick, and my heart clenched as I instinctively wanted to see her.

However, when I remembered the disgust and hatred in her eyes earlier and remembered her calling me a bad dad, I forced down my anxiety and concern.

I slowly raised my head and looked at Stacy coldly.

“Then let’s get a divorce. Since none of you want to see me again, wouldn’t you get exactly what you want if I disappeared?”

She froze for a moment as if she had not expected me to say that, and then a mocking smile spread across her face.

“Divorce? Sam, what trick are you playing this time? You’re tired of me, so you want to use divorce to threaten me and squeeze more money out of me?”

She paused as something seemed to occur to her.

She continued, “Why did you quit your job? What about Emma’s future treatment costs? Are you abandoning her?”

She actually had the nerve to bring this up.

I only felt that those words were incredibly ironic. The anguish I had buried for three years erupted completely in that moment.

“Stacy, stop pretending. I know you’re the chairwoman of the Morgan Group, Chairwoman Morgan. I know how you tested me for three years. You pretended to be poor with an ordinary person like me. That must’ve been exhausting, right?”

She was rendered speechless at my words. She instantly flew into a rage.

“You…” She pointed at me and could not speak for a long time.

“Since you already know who I am, do you still want a divorce?”

She steadied herself, and her gaze turned dark.

I nodded without hesitation.

“Yes, I want a divorce.”

She laughed suddenly, and the sound was full of disdain.

“Enough, Sam. Drop that whole push-and-pull act of yours.

“You pretended you didn’t care about my money, so I’d feel guilty and give you more, right?

“Your plan failed! Listen up. I’m divorcing you immediately, and you’re leaving with nothing!”

Hearing how badly she misunderstood me, I no longer had the strength to argue.

That was fine.

I did not want to say another word and calmly grabbed the divorce agreement I had prepared long ago from my bag.

I handed it to her.

“Sign it.”

The smile on Stacy’s face froze instantly as she stared at the black-and-white agreement. Her eyes widened.

“You’re serious?!”

Emma came to the hospital almost every day. Stacy had already told her everything. That was why her eyes were red every time she came. She brought her favorite picture book and sat by my bed. She read to me in her soft, childish voice. “Dad, today I’m reading [Guess How Much I Love You]. This is the one you used to love reading to me.” She opened the book and read seriously. Sunlight streamed through the window and fell on her small profile. Her lashes cast gentle shadows on her cheeks. As she read, her voice began to crack, and large tears dropped onto the pages and soaked them. She put the book down and carefully climbed onto the bed. She gently touched my face with her small hand. “Dad, I’m sorry. Don’t ever leave me, okay? “I’ll be really good from now on. I’ll listen to you, and I’ll help massage you, and I’ll feed you. “As long as you stay, I’ll do anything.” Her tears fell warmly onto my cheek, and they burned. My heart ached beyond words. I wanted so

I believed what John and Stacy told me. I quit the job I loved and entered the livestream studio. There, I began my three years of playing a corpse. I transferred every cent I earned to Stacy, so it could be used for Emma’s treatment. I thought I was saving my family, but I did not realize I was stepping into a cage built for testing me. What were they testing? They were testing whether a man would change when faced with enormous wealth and family responsibility. They were testing how far a father would go for his child. As I thought about it, I realized how laughable it was. A woman who possessed billions chose such a despicable method to test a man who loved her with everything he had. She may have wanted to see when I would collapse and when I would give up. What she did not expect was that I endured it. The price was my life. During the final days of my life, John came once. “Sam, look at you now. It’s pathetic.” He clicked his tongue twice, and his tone

Stacy suddenly crouched in front of me and clasped my icy hand tightly. Her face was already covered with tears. “Sam, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry…” She repeated those words again and again. Her voice was hoarse and filled with endless regret. “Sam, don’t fall asleep. Please don’t fall asleep… Look at me. Just look at me, okay…” I wanted to smile at her and tell her that I no longer hated her. However, I no longer had the strength to even move the corners of my mouth. As my consciousness faded, what surfaced in my mind was a memory from three years ago. The three of us were having a picnic in the park. Emma was laughing while chasing butterflies. Stacy hugged me from behind and rested her chin on my shoulder while whispering, “Sam, you and Emma are the greatest source of happiness in my life.” Back then, her smile had been so sincere. Once the floodgates of memory opened, everything rushed in like a tide. My meeting with Stacy had been scripted from the very beginning

Stacy clearly heard it too. Her body swayed while her face turned paper white. She could not believe it, and even I could not accept such a cruel outcome. A small figure peeked out from behind her. My daughter’s face was streaked with tears, and her eyes were red and swollen. She clutched Stacy’s hand timidly, and tears fell nonstop. “Mom, is Dad leaving me again?” she sobbed. “I don’t want him to leave me. I won’t say hurtful things to push Dad away anymore. Mom, can you make Dad stay, please?” As I listened to my daughter’s tearful pleading, my own tears fell again. I wanted to raise my hand to wipe her tears away and tell her that I did not blame her. However, I no longer even had the strength to control my hands. I had yearned to hold my daughter for so long, but my arms hung heavily at my sides. I could not move them at all. Time slipped away day by day without mercy and became unbearably precious. One month was neither long nor short. My body deteriorate

All the expression drained from Stacy’s face. She stared blankly at the doctor as if she did not understand what those three words meant. A few seconds later, she snapped out of it, grabbed the doctor by the collar, and started shouting. “That’s impossible! You’re lying, you quack! You said it was just muscle atrophy! You lied to me!” The doctor staggered under her hard grip, and his face filled with helpless fear. I hurried forward and pulled her grip off him. “This has nothing to do with him. I was the one who asked him to tell you that.” Stacy whipped her head around and looked at me in disbelief. “Sam, you…” Her eyes were full of regret and self-blame, yet to me it looked painfully ironic. If this was how it would end, why do it in the first place? She finally let go of me and braced both hands on the doctor’s desk. “I don’t care what illness it is! Mobilize your hospital’s best doctors immediately and use the best medicine and the best equipment. You must cur

“I’m serious.” I replied calmly and handed her a pen as well. Stacy recoiled as if she had been burned, and she stumbled back a step. “Sam, stop messing around!” she said. Her voice softened with panic. “I was joking earlier. I was just ranting because I was angry. Don’t take it too seriously.” She was joking, but I was not. John’s voice came from the end of the hallway, and he hurried over, looking worried. “Stacy, I’ve been looking everywhere for you. Emma’s been crying nonstop because she can’t find you, so she insisted I come out to look. I walked all over the hospital and didn’t expect you to be here.” He stopped in front of us, and when he saw the divorce agreement in my hand, a flash of delight crossed his eyes. “Sam, you’re here too? Are you sick?” he asked with feigned concern. Then he covered his mouth as if struck by a sudden realization. “Oh wow! What a coincidence. Emma had an episode and was rushed to the hospital, and you’re already here.” His words
