Chapter 2

Author: Summer Dream
Mia immediately gave me a positive answer.

She said that the Alpha of Northwind Pack was completely different from the other hypocritical Alphas in the southern region.

Apparently, the Alpha didn't care about the wolf's bloodline or their strength. If a wolf had nowhere to go, the Northwind Pack doors were always open to them.

I heaved a sigh of relief and felt my tension easing away.

As it turned out, I wasn't going to be truly without options anyway.

Just as I ended the call and put my phone away, I felt a hard chest slamming up against my back.

I smelled the familiar scent of cedar in the air and knew that it was Carlson.

His brows were furrowed as he glared down at me, sounding impatient as he interrogated me.

"Who were you talking to on the phone? What is this about a shelter?"

I felt my heart drop into my stomach. However, I quickly calmed down after that.

Carlson had only heard bits and pieces of my conversation. He hadn't managed to overhear everything.

So, I lowered my eyes and got rid of all the emotion in my eyes before coming up with an excuse.

"Oh, it was Mia. She invited me to watch a movie about a shelter and asked me if I was interested."

The doubt in Carlson's eyes quickly disappeared. His lips curled up in a sneer as he scoffed and said, "Nonsense. You should stop being friends with shady hooligans like Mia. She's only going to corrupt you."

He then paused for a bit and resumed his cold demeanor.

"The surgery is scheduled in three days. I will be bringing Selena home to take care of her in the meantime. It's more convenient that way."

Then, he seemed to suddenly think of something, and his voice got even colder as he ordered, "Also, get rid of the stupid stars in your room and make sure Selena never finds out about them. I don't want any misunderstandings to happen."

Stupid stars.

So, that was what he thought about those memories.

I smirked lightly and self-deprecatingly.

When Mom and Dad died in the battle, I nestled in Carlson's arms, sobbing hard and asking him if there was anything I could do to bring them back, how to be strong so that I wouldn't continue getting bullied, and what I should do so that Carlson would always like me.

Back then, Carlson wiped away the blood smears and tears from my face and said, "The Moon Goddess will grant your three wishes once you've managed to fold 1000 paper stars, Ayna."

I believed him.

Ever since getting a crush on him, I wrote down all of my unspoken love, affection, and dependence on Carlson onto the tiny paper slips before folding them day after day into paper stars and collecting them into a glass bottle.

After 15 years, I had finally finished folding all 1000 of them.

However, the very person who wove this fairytale for me had long forgotten that promise a long time ago.

"Fine. I'll throw them away," I said, my voice dry and hoarse, going with everything he said.

Carlson seemed very satisfied with my obedience.

"Smart. At least you know what's good for you."

Then, he turned and left.

I went home and pushed open the door to the second bedroom, my eyes widening as soon as I saw Selena seated on my bed and holding the glass bottle of stars in her hands. She was happily unfolding the stars one by one, reciting aloud the words I'd written in a drawn-out voice.

"Carlson called me pretty today. I was happy for the entire day."

After reading it aloud, she threw the slip onto the floor and clicked her tongue in disapproval. "What touching, unrequited love, Ayna."

I clenched my fists and suppressed my anger.

"You're not even going to pretend to be blind anymore?"

Selena didn't seem to panic even though I'd caught her red-handed. Instead, she slowly looked up and waved the glass jar at me.

Her right eye was wide open, and it looked clear and bright. There was no sign of blindness whatsoever.

"So, you knew all along," she said with a malicious grin on her face.

I stared at her intact eye and found it ridiculously absurd.

"You already have all of Carlson's love, Selena. Why are you still pretending to be blind? Why won't you just leave me be?"

Carlson watched as I threw myself into Renault's arms, letting Renault lower his head and kiss me while we embraced.Carlson clutched his chest and suddenly coughed up a mouthful of blood that immediately stained the snow red.He only realized just then that his feelings for me had never been merely familial or platonic. However, I had always only ever revolved around him, and he naturally assumed that I would always love him, wait for him, and never leave him.He never thought that I would really leave him one day.His jealousy and remorse nearly drove him to rush forward and stop it all from happening, but he didn't. He knew now that he no longer had the right to do that. The only thing he could do now was to watch helplessly as the she-wolf he'd unknowingly loved for half his life became someone else's mate. There was just nothing else he could do about it.This was the first time in his life that he understood what it meant to love someone he could never be with.He wondered

I didn't answer Renault directly. Instead, I silently grasped his hand and muttered, "Silly Remy."Renault froze for a second before grinning, a radiant smile spreading across his face that reflected all over the snowy plains.Carlson watched as Renault and I walked away side by side before collapsing onto the ground, his body ice-cold.The frigid wind cut across his face like sharp knives, yet he couldn't feel the pain. His mind was only filled with the image of me walking away with Renault, hand in hand, and the glaring image nearly drove him mad."No… Ayna can't possibly be in love with someone else… She must have been deceived… She's just doing this on purpose to make me angry…"He slammed his fist into the snow, his eyes filled with lunacy and madness. He suddenly recalled the rumors about Renault's promiscuous behavior and clutched to it like he was grasping at straws in his despair. He was convinced that as long as he found irrefutable evidence of Renault's playboy behavi

After I was done talking, I tugged on Renault's hand and turned to leave."Ayna! Don't go!" Carlson roared, rushing up to grab my arm."Get lost!"Before he could touch me, however, he was violently forced back several steps by Renault's impending Alpha aura.Renault then shielded me behind him and glared down at Carlson, his eyes cold and frosty."Did the frigid temperatures freeze your brain over, Alpha Carlson of Moonshadow Pack? How dare you pester my future mate right under my eyes? Did you really think that my rules in Northwind are just for show?""Shut up! This is between Ayna and me!" Carlson roared, steadying himself and looking at me with a pained expression. He abandoned all his pride and dignity as an Alpha and pleaded humbly with me."Ayna, please, just come home with me. I've already found out about the truth! Selena was the one who lied to me the whole time! You were the one who shielded my curse for me! I've already investigated everything and found out the trut

Three days later, Carlson hid behind the hill and immediately spotted the figure he had been thinking of day and night on the snowy Northwind snowfields.I was surrounded by a pack of young pups with a gentle smile on my face that Carlson had never seen before. My eyes were brimming with unwavering joy and determination, and I looked absolutely radiant and glowing.Carlson stared at me for a long time, mesmerized, forgetting to even breathe. He was just about to rush up to me when someone else beat him to it.Renault approached me with a smile on his face, his movements naturally intimate as he adjusted my windswept hood and whispered something in my ear that made me laugh.Carlson was immediately consumed with fury and jealousy, making him lose all composure as he rushed out toward us."Renault Thornewulf!" he exclaimed, suddenly rushing out from behind the hill while releasing his powerful Alpha aura and howling fiercely."Aren't there enough she-wolves in Northwind for you to

Three months later, sunlight pierced through the wispy clouds in the sky and shone down onto the snow in the Northwind snowfields, reflecting a dazzling white color across the ground.I was crouching over in an open space, patiently teaching a pack of young pups how to identify medicinal herbs in the snow.A slight breeze blew by, ruffling my long hair under my hood, revealing a pair of strikingly different heterochromatic eyes—one blue, one silver.Renault had found the world's top ophthalmologist from human society and used a secret technique to implant a compatible eyeball in my empty socket. And now, these heterochromatic eyes were the mark of my rebirth.Just as I was about to check on the pups' progress, I suddenly heard excited howls and barks echoing from the yard.I turned to look and saw Renault leaning against the wooden fence, his eyes crinkling as he looked at me with a warm bowl of healing potion for me.Rumors were that Alpha Renault of Northwind Pack was a spoile

Carlson's body jolted violently. He had a feeling that he was about to learn something terrible."W-What do you know?" he asked Barbara in a hoarse voice.Barbara sighed and slowly began to speak, telling him everything about the truth that had happened three years ago."You were cursed by the vampires three years ago, and there was no reversing the curse. It was that white wolf girl, barely 18 years old, who willingly gave up half of her life and begged me to use the forbidden spell to transfer the curse onto herself."That silly pup even made me promise not to tell you a word about it because she didn't want you to feel indebted to her. She was worried that you would feel burdened if you found out about it and get heartbroken."Every word Barbara said felt like a sharp knife going straight into Carlson's heart. That "white wolf girl" who was barely 18 years old could have only been Ayna.It really had been her.As it turned out, the person he'd owed his life to had been Ayna
