Chapter 2

Author: Zoey
After I left the hospital, Mom's body was taken to the funeral home.

Before she died, she had told me that if that day ever came, she wanted her ashes scattered at sea.

She wanted to break free of her illness and finally be free, with nothing holding her down.

Not getting to see me happy with her own eyes was already a regret.

This last wish, at least, I would make sure came true.

When it was all over and I got home, Helena was wearing my lace nightgown, her bare shoulder pressed right up against Callum's.

The two of them were going over their research under the harsh overhead light.

"What took you so long?"

Callum glanced up at me. A second later, his eyes went back to their research.

"Make her a bowl of chicken noodle soup. Lots of onions, go easy on the salt. Do not cook the noodles for too long. No carrots. When the noodles are done, cover them and let them sit for two minutes."

He rattled it off fast, every step in perfect order, as smoothly as if he were reciting a passage he'd memorized in high school.

He had completely forgotten that a few days earlier, I'd scalded my hand with boiling water making late-night food for the two of them. There was no way I could cook noodles.

When I didn't move, Helena pouted, pretending to be hurt.

"Forget it. I won't force anyone. If you want something done, do it yourself."

She walked straight to the refrigerator and opened the door.

Then she pulled out a few airtight containers of homemade doughnuts, each carefully sealed.

Mom had made them for me while she still had a little strength left, kneading the dough and frying them herself.

"What are you doing?!"

I reached out to grab the doughnuts back, but Helena dug her nails into the container and wouldn't let go.

"My mom made those for me. I never said you could have them. Who said you could touch my things?!"

I yanked the container back hard. The force accidentally bent back one of Helena's nails.

Callum's brows drew together at once, and he snapped at me.

"You're making this much of a fuss over a stupid doughnut? Helena's hands are going to be in the operating room saving lives. If she ends up with permanent damage, are you going to take responsibility for that?"

All he could see was her hands. He didn't even notice the black suit I was wearing.

A chill crept through my chest.

Mom had already thought of him as her son-in-law. He was the man I'd loved with my whole heart for seven years.

Seven years of swallowing my pride, and in the end, it wasn't worth as much as her hands.

"If she hadn't taken my things without asking, I wouldn't have had to grab them back and hurt her nail.

"And my mom made those for me. I couldn't even bring myself to eat them. What gives you the right to just take them?!"

Callum's frown deepened. He was about to lay into me again, but Helena held out a hand to stop him.

"Forget it. It's just a doughnut. If I want one, I can buy my own.

"It's just..."

Her eyes swept over me, full of pity and quiet judgment.

Then she lowered her voice and spoke to Callum.

"From my years of clinical experience with patients, I can tell you something is wrong with Rosalie mentally. Her behavior and speech are extreme. She's volatile, and she makes a mountain out of every molehill.

"Textbook paranoid disorder."

It was absurd.

Yes, I'd lost control of my emotions, but that was because I'd just lost my mother.

All I wanted was to hold on to the last little thing Mom left me. How had that turned me into a mental patient who needed treatment?

Before I could say a word, Helena stormed out and slammed the door behind her.

Callum was left standing there, his face ashen.

After a long time, he pinched the bridge of his nose, looking helpless.

"Rosalie, I'm tired."

There was no expression on his face. Helena's words had clearly gotten to him.

"Especially every time you throw a fit for no reason. It wears me out, body and soul.

"You know what? Someone in my department died again today. I face life and death every day. I'm under enormous pressure. I just don't have the energy left to deal with your mood swings."

Something inside me caved in.

All the hurt and grief came surging up.

In that moment, I suddenly wanted to ask him: do you even know who that patient was?

Do you know that the tantrum you're talking about is because I just lost my mom?

But before I could open my mouth, the phone in his pocket rang.

He pulled it out and glanced at the screen, and his frown eased at once.

"Emergency surgery. I've got to go.

"Take some time to calm down. When I get a chance, I'll take you to see a therapist."

I took a deep breath."I do feel a little sympathy for you, but I only helped you because it's the decent thing any person would do."That doesn't mean I forgive you. And it definitely doesn't mean there's any going back for us.""I know..."He wiped the blood from his face. "Just stay with me for a little while."Let me look at you a little longer."I couldn't put the tangle of feelings into words, but I hated it.He'd done damage that nearly destroyed me, and now he wanted to act like a man hopelessly devoted.Once he was fast asleep, I found a caregiver, explained what he'd need, and walked out of the room.I knew exactly where I stood.I could save his life out of basic humanity. I could pay someone to look after him. But that was as far as I would go.Sympathy wasn't the same as softening. Pity wasn't the same as forgiveness.I didn't want to get pulled back into his life. But the next day, Callum found me again. He said I didn't have to forgive him, but I couldn't s

"I've already handed in my resignation. A man like me doesn't deserve to be a doctor."I also reported everything Helena did to my superiors. Before long, you'll get the justice you deserve."When I didn't answer, Callum pressed his forehead against the glass door.I could hear his breathing clearly."I owe you too much. I understand if you won't forgive me. But I'm begging you, take care of yourself. Don't let my mistakes make you unhappy."Rosie..."He ran his fingers over the glass. His voice was so full of tenderness that it threw me for a moment, as if he weren't Callum at all."I know no amount of apologizing can undo what's already happened. Diane, Lucky, your seven years—I'm the one who destroyed all of it."I don't dare hope we can go back to how things were. I'm just asking for a chance to make it up to you, even if it's only watching over you from a distance."Look."He opened his phone, and a faint meow came through the screen."Lucky's gone, so I got you a new o

Callum's hand froze in midair. Then he spoke, full of remorse."I'm sorry. I know everything now. Rosie... I didn't mean for any of this. I never thought Diane would die. I never thought Helena would do something like that... I really...""Stop. If you're looking for someone, sir, look somewhere else. I'm working. Please don't bother me!"I didn't even bother to look up. I just pointed at the door.Callum bit down hard on his lower lip. He looked like he couldn't believe it, and yet like he'd expected nothing less."Okay. I won't bother you right now. We can talk when you're done."He didn't push forward like he used to, stubborn and sure of himself, forcing me to listen to his excuses.Instead, he held the roses, quietly stepped back outside, and crouched down by the studio entrance. My workstation happened to block my view of the door. The man who'd always looked down on everyone and was used to being in control of everything had finally learned a little self-awareness.By

"Helena!"Callum didn't give her time to react. He grabbed her luggage and yanked it.Before Helena could react, the momentum threw her into the doorframe.A dull pain shot through her bones, but Callum didn't hesitate for a second."Get out!"Helena cried out. "You hurt me! Aren't you even going to say sorry?"In the past, forget shoving her—if she so much as scraped a thin layer of skin off her hand, he'd anxiously go find antiseptic and gauze and bend down to bandage it himself. But now, looking at her fake wounded expression, all he felt was disgust."This is my home. Mine and Rosalie's. You don't get to move in here and take her place."Get out."Helena stumbled, then caught her balance. The shock on her face outweighed the pain she'd been faking. She couldn't accept that Callum, who'd always been so understanding and considerate toward her, would treat her like this."Callum, what are you saying? Rosalie throws one tantrum, and you treat me like this?"I've got nowhe

When Callum got home, he didn't even stop to close the car door. He hurried in carrying the Ragdoll kitten he'd just bought at a pet store on the way.He knew he had wronged Rosalie, and he wanted to do everything in his power to make it up to her.But when he opened the door, the apartment was empty. All that was left was the dried blood spattered across the floor and the bloodstained rope."Rosalie!"Callum set the carrier down and frantically searched everywhere."Rosalie, I'm home."I bought you a new Ragdoll kitten. Rosalie!"The only answer in the empty apartment was cold silence. He stumbled through the living room, the bedroom, the balcony. He searched every corner of the place, but there was no sign of her slight figure anywhere.Lucky's cold little body, which had been left on the table, was gone too.The blood on the table had been wiped away.As if the horror that had happened there had never taken place. And everything that belonged to Rosalie had disappeared

The name slipped out of him in a murmur. Then he grabbed the nurse in front of him by the front of her scrubs. "Why didn't anyone tell me? Why didn't anyone tell me the patient in Bed 17 was getting worse?! Do you people even see me as head of this department?!"The young nurse was shaking all over at his sudden outburst, but she still managed to point at the death certificate on the computer screen."We wanted to tell you when she started getting worse.
