Synopsis

Marriage

Tragic Love

Scumbag

Mistress

Bias

Before I was wheeled into surgery, the nurse kept urging me to call a family member. At last, a delivery runner rushed into my ward, out of breath. "Hello, Ms. Wexler. Mr. Adrian Prescott placed an order for me to accompany you through surgery in Ward 907." My phone buzzed twice with a new notification. I lowered my head and saw Sophie Lane's latest post. "Caught a cold and sounded a little stuffy, and Mr. Prescott noticed right away. He insisted on taking me to the doctor and even made ginger tea for me. So spicy, but so sweet." The picture showed a tall, lean man with his shirt sleeves rolled up, pouring ginger tea from a saucepan into a thermos. His eyes were focused and gentle. I stared at the photo in a daze. I had been hospitalized for five days. My husband of five years, Adrian Prescott, had never visited once. He said he was busy with work. But once again, I saw him in Sophie Lane's social media post. That careful, gentle Adrian Prescott, the man who knew exactly how to love someone. Before I was pushed into the operating room, I submitted my resignation and made one phone call. "Mr. Powell, please print the divorce agreement."

Chapter 1
It was eleven in the morning when I came home from the hospital. The anesthesia had worn off completely, and my chest felt as if a breath were trapped inside it, pressing so hard I could barely stand it.I leaned against the wall for a long while before I finally had enough strength to open the door. The smell of soup hit me first. Then came Adrian Prescott's familiar voice."Don't rush it. You need enough patience to make a good pot of soup."The next second, Sophie Lane's cheerful voice floated over."But I've never had patience since I was little. Mr. Prescott, Adrian, can I come to you whenever I want soup from now on?"Adrian's voice carried a slight smile. "Sure."I set my medicine by the entryway and slowly changed my shoes while holding on to the wall.Sophie heard the movement and came out of the kitchen. When she saw me, she smiled."Hi, Mrs. Prescott. I heard you were being discharged today, so I shamelessly dragged Mr. Prescott to your home. I wanted to make you s

Chapter 2
For a moment, I drifted."Be a little more mature."Those were the four words Adrian had said to me most often in our five years of marriage.I sent him photos of stray cats I met by the road, camellias blooming downstairs, trees I didn't recognize...He told me to be more mature. I was married now, and I shouldn't do little-girl things like that.I shared songs I liked with him, funny or sad things I saw online, people I met who made me angry or amused...He told me to be more mature and not keep bothering him with irrelevant things.Later, it became the gas stove breaking at home, the water pipe bursting...When I called Adrian, he still impatiently told me to be more mature and stop looking for him over every little thing. In the end, it became this.A rainstorm when I couldn't get a cab. A late-night flight home after a business trip. Going to the hospital when I was sick. All of it ended with him telling me to be more mature and solve it myself.I came back to myself a

Chapter 3
When I got home, what greeted me was another cold, empty room.Adrian wasn't there.I realized I had gotten used to it.I changed into home clothes, tied on an apron, cooked, ate, and took my medicine. After finishing my work handover in the study, I began planning a road trip through the Blue Ridge Mountains. After I searched for a while, the algorithm began recommending all kinds of videos related to Blue Ridge road trips.I casually opened one. The video was full of greenery, free wind, and a girl's happy voice. When I heard movement outside, I picked up my tablet and opened the study door.Adrian had changed into slippers and was coming in. He frowned at the tablet in my hand."Courtney, I've told you I'm very busy lately. I don't have time to accompany you to the hospital, and there's no way I can go traveling with you."I haven't forgotten the Blue Ridge trip we agreed on. You don't need to keep trying to remind me like this. We just have to wait until I have time."I

I went to the office again. The handover was basically finished, so I began packing my things.Whatever could be given away, I gave away. Whatever needed to be cleared out, I cleared out.At noon, I treated the coworkers I was close with to lunch. They had all visited me in the hospital. When they heard I was leaving, they had prepared gifts for me.I deliberately chose a fairly expensive, very popular restaurant.Because I knew the owner, I was able to book a private room. But when I arrived, there were already people in the room I had reserved. It was Adrian and Sophie."Courtney, Sophie wanted to try a high-end restaurant like this. I remembered you knew the owner, so I asked and sure enough, you'd booked a room. We borrowed it first."He looked at the coworkers behind me, whose expressions had all changed, and added, "Could you eat in the main dining room tonight? I'll pay for your meal."For a moment, I didn't even know what to say.Two appetizers had already been serv

After the plane landed, I turned off airplane mode.A bright red notification count and missed-call alerts appeared in the lower right corner. When I opened them, they were all from Adrian.I ignored them, went to the hotel I had booked, checked in, and organized my toiletries in the room.I sat by the floor-to-ceiling window for a while before finally opening his messages.[?][Courtney, what do you mean?][Why do you suddenly want a divorce? What happened?][Is this because of Sophie? She's just my assistant. We have nothing between us.][Courtney, answer the phone. If you misunderstood my relationship with Sophie, I can explain. She's too young, a fresh graduate just entering the working world. She reminded me of you back then, so I couldn't help looking after her a little more. We have nothing between us.]Nothing between them? But when he saw my divorce agreement, Adrian's first reaction was to assume it was because of Sophie.Didn't that already explain the problem?

Chapter 6
On the day I drove deep into the Blue Ridge, I received another message from Adrian.[I'm in Asheville. Can we meet and talk?]When I saw the message, I was extremely surprised. He must have come here for a business trip.He definitely had not come specially for me.In five years of marriage, he had never changed any part of his schedule for me.I did not reply. I put down my phone and continued along my planned route. When I stopped for lunch and checked my phone again, I saw more than a dozen new messages from him.Of course, there were calls too.But just like the previous few days, I ignored all of them.At first, he asked where I was and told me to pick up the phone. But the later messages returned to the Adrian I knew so well.[Courtney, we're all adults. When there is a problem, we should find a way to solve it instead of running away.][You threw down a divorce agreement and left. You don't reply, you don't answer calls. What exactly is this supposed to be?][I've

Chapter 7
"Mr. and Mrs. Wexler, I've never thought about divorce. I came this time because I want to talk to Courtney about it."I stepped forward and said, "Then please wait a moment. I'll take my suitcase upstairs, and we'll find somewhere outside to talk."Only then did he notice my suitcase."I'll carry it up for you."I avoided him and lifted the suitcase with one hand. "No need."During the months after I left, I had long since gotten used to life without Adrian.I had carried this suitcase up and down on my own the whole time. I truly did not need anyone's help.Adrian waited downstairs alone. Before going out, I specially told my parents, "I'll be back soon and eat dinner with you."When I went downstairs and walked outside, Adrian followed silently behind me.Our small town didn't even have an airport, so naturally there were no upscale cafes either. We found a small nearby park with few people.I found a quiet corner and turned to look at him.We had not seen each other fo

Adrian's face finally changed. But when he opened his mouth, he still said, "I didn't know..."I glanced down at my phone. I didn't want to waste any more time with him.It wasn't worth it.I said, "Mm. You didn't know. You didn't notice. You thought I didn't care. Then now I'm telling you, I care very much. My feelings for you were used up in all these things."I don't want to continue this marriage with you."Adrian, can you please sign the divorce agreement? Once we're divorced, whoever you want to be good to, whoever you want to help, will be your freedom. No one will have any right to comment."His lips moved, as if he could see the finality in my attitude. He said nothing else. His face was simply a little pale.I waited a few seconds. When he still did not speak, I prompted him. "What do you think?"He said in a low voice, "I understand what you mean. But before this, I kept thinking you were only angry and throwing a tantrum. Now I need to think carefully. Once I've

Now, when I faced him, I no longer even felt impatient.I was only a little confused.Did Adrian truly still have feelings for me?But when I thought of all the things he had done to me after Sophie appeared, saying he had feelings for me seemed far too unbelievable. So I met him again. This time, he seemed to have truly thought things through. His expression was dim.The first thing he did when he saw me was apologize."I'm sorry, Courtney."Many of my improper actions caused your misunderstanding."He took out a laptop and turned it toward me."It's true that these were the years my career was really taking off. I was too busy and had no time to travel with you. I clearly promised you, yet broke that promise again and again."That was my fault."I thought I was taking care of a new employee. I didn't expect it to make you misunderstand my relationship with her and then doubt my feelings for you."That was also my fault."Sophie posted many ambiguous things on social med
