Chapter 2

Author: Anonymous
“How could you say that, Your Highness? You are husband and wife. No one is subject to the other.” Willow was quite displeased by my words.

I turned to her, and Willow hunched her shoulders. Perhaps my gaze was too cold. Just as she was about to say something, she noticed Afton turning pale.

She immediately ran toward him and took out her handkerchief. While she wiped the sweat on his forehead, she rebuked the servants standing by the side. “The sun is blazing hot. Why didn’t you provide shade for His Highness? How are you going to explain yourselves to Her Highness if anything happened to him?”

Then, she cast Afton a look of pity and reached out, as though she wanted to touch his face. At the same time, she softened her tone. “Your Highness, why stand in the sun outside the palace gate? Don’t you worry. Her Highness will surely take care of this for you.”

Afton gently pushed Willow’s hands away and gave her a soft glance, unlike the one he gave me.

His gaze would always be cold and full of annoyance toward me.

When he turned toward me, he put on a mocking smile before straightening his back further. “If you’re here to convince me to send Melinda and her daughter away, please leave and give up on such a thought. Melinda wasn’t born with a silver spoon, unlike you. Her life has been full of hardship, and she has no one else to depend on apart from me,” he said with an air of indifference.

“You are a woman yourself. Why are you treating Melinda with such hostility? His Majesty might say that she is the daughter of an impeached official, but she is a woman of little means. I’m certain that His Majesty is merely doing this to defend your honor.”

“He speaks truly, Your Highness. Why must you be so uncharitable? You have always said that you care about His Highness. Therefore, you should be prioritizing his wishes and likes. Besides, His Highness is right. Melinda is a pitiful soul!” Willow agreed.

Afton’s gaze turned even colder as he looked at me. I could even see the disgust in his eyes.

He soon turned his face away and refused to look at me any longer. It was as if I were some dirty object. “Arwen, even a servant is more mature than you are.”

Hearing Afton’s words, Willow smiled shyly.

When she saw how I still refused to say anything, she appeared displeased. Willow opened her mouth, as though she wanted to say something, but I simply fixed my eyes on Afton.

I had loved this man for most of my life.

At this moment, he was staring at me like he wanted to skin me alive. It was as if I had murdered his father, though I had done no such thing. Instead, I had killed his wife.

It must have been hard for him to stay beside me quietly. He had been lying in wait for a chance for revenge for ten years.

Willow regarded me as her enemy as well. She grew up with me, and I had protected her all this while. Even though she was my servant-in-name, everyone in the palace knew that she was something like a sister to me.

I had saved her from freezing to death in the snow and protected her for two lifetimes, but she fed me slow-acting poison for a man. Then, with my life at stake, she deceived my father and brother to the point that they lost their composure. She even conspired with Afton to kill them, all because Afton despised me and did not want me to live a happy life.

A mocking sneer formed on my lips as I clenched my fists.

These two were my sworn enemies, and I wanted them hung, drawn, and quartered.

However, I did my best to smother the rage in my heart.

They could not die so easily.

Just then, a woman in white ran over in tears and held Afton’s arm. “Lord Springfield, don’t beg for His Majesty’s mercy anymore. My heart bleeds for you when you do this. I would rather die than watch you hurt yourself like this. I admit to my sins, and I am willing to accept whatever punishment His Majesty wants to exact on me, so long as you aren’t affected. Then, I can rest in peace.”

With great pity in his heart, Afton wiped away Melinda’s tears and cooed at her.

When he spoke to me, his voice was cold. “Arwen, I will not let Melinda and her daughter go. Give up. You were the one who took me from Melinda’s hands. This is what you owe her. You must repay her.”

Willow started pleading for my grace as well. “Your Highness, just let His Highness be with Melinda. No matter what, you are his wife. You must be considerate of your husband and make sure he has descendants!”

My cold gaze landed on Willow, Afton, and finally, on Melinda.

This was my first time seeing her.

She was not outstanding in terms of beauty. At most, she could only be considered pleasant to the eye.

When she looked at me, she did so timidly and with tears in her eyes. She seemed like an easily startled, fragile bird. I knew that she would die if I just gave the order.

Yet, this fragile, helpless woman became the spark that ruined the royal family.

As I remembered all that had happened in the previous timeline, I shuddered.

Once, I had foolishly stood beside Afton at the palace gate and forced my father to rescind his order.

How sad must my father have been? This time, I would do that no more.

I chuckled and stepped away from Willow. “If you wish to beg for mercy, continue doing so. I will not stop you from getting together.”

Once I divorced Afton, I moved back into the palace. As I prepared to leave, Afton came to me with a complicated look on his face. “Robin…”I was stunned. The people only knew me by my name, Arwen. That was why they referred to me as Arwen, Arwen Lorde, or Princess Arwen. However, I had a pet name—Robin. My mother gave it to me in the hopes that I would be as free as a robin. I had failed to live up to her expectations and chosen to be tied down to Afton. “Lord Springfield, I am your princess, and you are my subject. We are not so close that you can call me by my pet name,” I said with a sense of detachment.Afton’s eyes turned dull. “I was led into discord. We can start anew.”In his haste, he approached me to hold my hand, but the guards shielded me. My voice grew even more detached. “We cannot start anew. There are too many lives lost between us, and I no longer love you.”Afton was shocked upon hearing this. His eyes widened as he stared at me in shock. “Arwen… Yo

When I saw the dark look in Afton’s eyes, I knew that he had returned to the past as well. As he trained his eyes on me, I saw sadness, along with a myriad of words he was not saying. However, I could no longer endure the pain and fainted. I then had a dream of the previous timeline. My father had been certain that Melinda was the daughter of an impeached official. As such, he locked her and her daughter in prison. For her sake, Afton pleaded for mercy at the palace gate for seven days and nights. This caused my father to fly into rage. He declared that he wanted me to divorce Afton, and he would sentence Afton to death. To calm down my father, I went to the palace gate as well. Together with Afton, I pleaded for my father to rescind his order. Feeling resigned, my father sent Melinda and her daughter to the army as soldier servants instead. Then, he ordered Afton to treat me well so that my goodwill would not go to waste. For ten years, we had a loving relationship and l

Willow’s words caused a stir, and Afton sighed in relief before pointing an accusatory finger at me. Balram regarded me with confusion. I once loved Afton deeply, and I had been willing to do whatever it took for him. When Balram remembered my desperation in the past, he tried to defend me. “Arwen is already married to Afton. Why would she need to resort to such tricks to keep him?”Willow hurriedly said, “Because Melinda’s presence threatened Her Highness—”Balram’s expression sank, and he interrupted Willow, “How dare you run your mouth off when you are merely a servant? Execute her.”Willow was stunned before quickly casting a pitiful look at Afton. However, Afton did not spare her a glance. She then turned to me and started begging for mercy, “Your Highness, save me!”Afton was worried that Willow would reveal the truth, so he quickly ordered the guards, “Why are you still standing there? Drag her out and execute her.”Willow’s eyes widened as she stared at Afton in disb

I had already given up hope on Afton and only had hate toward him. Even so, when I heard such cold words from him, my heart still clenched with pain. I then remembered my son. Before he died in the den of snakes, he had used his last remaining strength to force himself to smile and comfort me. “It doesn’t hurt, Mother. I am simply tired and want to sleep.”That was my son. I cradled my chest and wept in silence. That night, Afton entered my room with a bowl of stew. When he saw me, he sighed. “Are you still cross with me?”He wanted to hold my hand, but I drew it back. Afton sighed again. “Arwen, I was abducted when I traveled to the Southern River. Melinda saved me. You know just how difficult it is for a delicate woman to survive in this world. That is why I wanted to bring her back and have her be pardoned. You are the only one I love.”I looked into Afton’s eyes. He had almond-shaped eyes that made him look loving when he smiled. If I had not been given the miracle

A few days later, Afton requested that his noble rank be given to his father’s illegitimate son. He even brought out the scroll that my grandfather had given to his family. In it was a royal pardon, and with it, he forced my father to forgive Melinda of her sin of being an impeached official’s daughter. My father was furious, and he declared that he was going to make Afton pay. When I heard this, I was feeding the fishes by the lake. Willow was grumbling about it beside me with indignant rage. “Haven’t you always been fond of His Highness? Aren’t you worried about divorcing him? His Highness needs you right now, Your Highness. Please convince His Majesty to forgive His Highness. Why must you let things grow so strained?“Your Highness, how could you still feed the fishes here? Have you forgotten that His Highness nearly died trying to save you?!”Willow was so loud that the fishes scattered. I stared at them and calmly said, “Are you ordering me?”I chuckled. It seemed to th

  • I Let My Husband Be With The Criminal’s Daughter   Chapter 4

In a few days, Charlotte Lorde, my aunt, would have her birthday. That day, I deliberated some things for a while before I decided to attend. The moment I stepped out of the carriage, I became aware of discreet glances cast my way. Some held pity, others contempt, and some regarded me as if I were a court jester. I immediately understood what had happened, but I ignored them. When I saw Charlotte, I had my servants hand over my gift before serving her a cup of tea. “Aunt Charlotte.”She gave me a lackadaisical glance before scornfully saying, “You are a princess. How could you be involved in such a farce? I feel ashamed for you.”She did not have anyone take my gift, and she did not address me further. She simply kept me around in front of her. When things started turning awkward, a gentle voice rose. “Your Highness, my apologies for being late. I hope you are not cross with me.”Melinda walked in wearing an olive dress and a pearl tiara. Upon seeing her, Charlotte’s eyes
