Chapter 3

作者: 67 Cut
Three hours later, I realized something that sent a chill down my spine.

My memory had started to go blank for short periods.

I had just memorized a poem and gone over it several times, but once I closed the book, my mind went blank. I couldn't remember the lines at all.

Another hour passed, and the feeling slowly faded. My memory came back.

I stared at the bottle of energy drink and finally understood.

This wasn't a supplementary drink that sharpened your mind. It was a short-term memory blocker.

By the time the SAT was over, the memories would come back.

One would just think, "I know I studied this. So why can't I remember it?"

There would be no way to prove what happened.

That was the worst part.

In my previous life, I tried to stop them, and they blamed me for meddling.

This time, I decided not to stop them.

They chose this path themselves. They could see it through.

The night before the SAT, I sat at my desk and checked everything I needed for the next day.

I had my SAT admission ticket, photo ID, all the usual school supplies, and a thermal flask filled with black coffee I brewed myself.

I stared at the coffee briefly, then took a spare pen from my drawer and stuck a small marker on the bottom of the flask.

The next morning, I grabbed my bag and headed out.

As luck would have it, Sasha and a few of her followers had been assigned to the same test center.

As soon as I walked through the entrance, she hurried over.

I tried to walk around her, but she blocked my way and shoved a bottle of the energy drink into my hands.

"Willow, we're about to go in. Why are you still being stubborn?" she asked. "I went out of my way to secure this for you. Drink it. It'll keep your mind sharp during the SAT!"

The cheap plastic packaging made my stomach tighten. I took a step back and said firmly, "Take it away. I don't need it, and mind your own business."

But Sasha wouldn't let up. She grabbed my wrist and held on tight.

"Why are you so impossible? This is something the whole class is doing. Do you really have to be the odd one out?" she asked.

As we struggled, one of the teachers in charge, Henry Gould, came over and stopped us. "Enough! The SAT is about to start. Get your things ready."

With Henry here, I pulled free from Sasha and moved to his side.

Sasha was livid. She stomped her foot and stormed away.

Henry looked over at the crowd and took my backpack. "Willow, go up front and help everyone find their assigned rooms. I'll hold your bag for you."

I nodded and pushed my way through the crowd. After noting down the room numbers for several classmates, I quickly made my way back.

But when I returned, the backpack I had left with Henry was gone.

Henry explained that he had stepped away to take a call, and Sasha offered to hold the bag for him. But now, Sasha was nowhere to be seen.

My SAT admission ticket, photo ID, and all my school supplies were in that bag.

Cold sweat instantly drenched my back. I looked around in a panic, nearly going to a police officer for help.

Just before security checks began, Sasha rushed out from behind a large tree. Out of breath, she roughly shoved my backpack into my arms.

"Willow, where have you been? The SAT is about to start, and you're still wandering around!" she said.

I grabbed my backpack and unzipped it. The coffee was still there, but the marker on the bottom of the thermal flask had misaligned—Sasha had opened it.

I unscrewed the lid and smelled it. There was a faint sweetness in the coffee, exactly like the energy drink.

In the end, Sasha was sentenced to five years in prison for drugging our classmates and sabotaging the SAT.Her usually arrogant parents had to sell their two luxury apartments downtown. The money went toward settling the civil lawsuits brought by more than 30 students who had failed the SAT. They lost everything and became social pariahs. As for the classmates who had joined in attacking and ostracizing me, they regretted it bitterly once they learned the truth. They finally understood that it wasn't me, their "cold-hearted class president", who ruined their lives. It was their own greed, blind obedience, and spite. They were left with ruined college prospects. They had no choice but to enroll in low-ranked schools and spend another year retaking the SAT. They spent that year drowning in regret.…In early September, I boarded a train north with an acceptance letter from a top university.Mom and Dad waved to me from the platform with tears in their eyes, their faces bright w

If it had been the naive me from my previous life, I might have felt some sympathy for Sasha's tears. But after getting a second chance at life, I had long since given up on her."Cut to the chase. What do you want?" I said coldly.Sasha seemed to sense an opening and quickly revealed what she wanted."Willow, I know I have no right to ask you for anything. But my parents have already put all our houses up for sale to cover the damages. And I might really go to prison."I'm not asking you to clear my name. I just… We're classmates, after all. Can you please tell the school or the police that we planned the whole thing together?"Tell them I wasn't the only one behind it. If you help me, I might get a lighter sentence. I know I hurt you and the whole class, but I really don't want to go to prison. I'm only 18 years old, Willow!"Hearing her shameless request, I couldn't help but laugh."Sasha, you went after me at every turn, and now you want me to take the blame for you? Are you

Under Sasha's post, I typed just one line."If you want the truth, I'll give it to you."Then I dropped the evidence I had been saving. My first piece of evidence was high-definition footage from the convenience store outside the test center on the first day of the SAT.The footage showed Sasha taking advantage of the moment when I turned to check the test-center map. She secretly opened my backpack and poured an unknown liquid into my thermal flask. The second piece of evidence was a lab report from an accredited testing facility, along with an expert's explanation. In the video, a lab technician in a white coat pointed to the lab report. He said firmly, "The sample contains a high concentration of a memory-blocking drug. It is a strictly controlled substance, and misuse can cause irreversible damage to the central nervous system."After posting the evidence, I tagged the city's police department, the education department, and the high school's official accounts.Less than an

Unfortunately for Sasha, she had completely miscalculated. The morning after the scores were released, a huge banner hung above the high school's main entrance. It read, "Congratulations to Willow Lawson, the second-highest SAT scorer in the city!"A few of Sasha's friends, who had also failed to get into college, dragged her to the school gate. When she read the gold lettering on the banner, her face twitched uncontrollably. She turned deathly pale and couldn't get a word out."Something's definitely wrong here. Willow drank the spiked coffee. How could she possibly have scored this well?"She frantically pulled out her phone and called my number over and over, only to realize I had blocked her.Driven half-mad by it, she started borrowing phones from passing students and stubbornly kept trying to call me. The moment I recognized her voice, I hung up.She tried more than a dozen different numbers, but every call ended the same way. With nowhere else to turn, she started bomba

The camera swept across the crowd. The students' faces were blurred, but I instantly recognized the young woman in the center who was crying the hardest. Her unmistakable stance and the way she kept playing with her bangs gave her away. It was Sasha. They still had no idea what had really happened. They naively thought there was a problem with the grading system and kept demanding that their scores be reviewed. The story went viral on the internet. The education authorities stepped in at once and checked the test center footage and the belongings of all the students. The security footage showed that none of the students who had drunk the energy drink had fallen asleep. They were wide awake, yet they sat there staring blankly at their tests and scratching their heads. Some suddenly stopped writing, looking terrified. A few even broke down in tears. They weren't sleepy; they simply couldn't answer the questions. The police quickly opened an investigation and followed the lead fr

I didn't spare Sasha another look. Instead, I turned and ran into the test center. When I found the proctor, Teresa Shaw, my hands were shaking."Ms. Shaw, I think someone tampered with my drink. Could you hold onto it for me?" I asked. "I won't drink anything during the test. I'll deal with it afterward."Teresa was a woman in her 40s. She looked at me, took the thermal flask, and nodded. "Sure. Leave it with me. Just focus on your test."I added, "Ms. Shaw, is there any bottled water here? I'd like to buy one."She took an unopened bottle of water from under the desk and handed it to me. "No need to buy. This is a spare, so just take it."I thanked her and went to my seat.…When the final bell rang across the test center, I rubbed my aching wrist as I left the building. As soon as I reached the flower bed, I ran into Sasha and her group. They were rubbing their eyes, looking confused. One of them muttered, "What the hell? I memorized the formula for the last physics problem
