Chapter 2

Author: Morning Flower
On the way to dinner, I sat in the front passenger seat, while Daniel and Kimberly sat in the back of the car.

Kimberley kept acting coy the entire ride, her voice cloyingly sweet. "Mr. Carter, I really don't want to drink. I heard that Mr. Ashford is quite handsy."

Daniel tapped her nose affectionately. "What's there to be afraid of? Maggie is here. She can hold her liquor and has plenty of experience, so she can handle this kind of scene. You just need to look pretty and sign the papers."

I stared at the streets flashing past the window, my stomach twisting in nausea.

I had once been the young lady he shielded behind him. Five years ago, during the company's early days, a client pressured me to drink. Daniel had almost flipped the table in a rage, then carried me on his back for two miles to reach the hospital.

He promised he would never let me suffer again, yet now he was pushing me toward ruin just to please his new flame.

As the car turned, my bag slid onto the back floor mat. I turned around to pick it up, but froze.

In the corner of the back seat lay a torn condom wrapper and a pair of torn nude stockings. They were the spare tights that I had always kept in the car's storage compartment.

Daniel followed my gaze. There was no panic on his face. Instead, he looked at me with a hint of provocation.

"Oh, we were in a hurry yesterday, so I borrowed them. You're never interested in wearing stuff like that anyway, so you might as well let Kimmy make good use of them," he said.

Kimberley giggled behind her hand, her eyes gleaming with smugness. "Oh, Maggie, I'm so sorry. I'll buy you a new pair next time."

Instead of getting angry, I laughed. I picked up the torn stockings, rolled down the window, and tossed them out. "No, thanks. I never keep things once they're dirty."

Daniel's expression shifted, as if he suspected something behind my words. Just as he was about to lash out, the car arrived at the hotel entrance.

At the dinner, Mr. Ashford proved to be a lecher, his greasy hands constantly wandering over me. "Ms. Sinclair, you really are the gold standard in the industry. Your skin looks far too youthful for someone in their 30s."

Daniel sat at the head of the table, pretending not to notice. He was busy cutting the steak for Kimberley. He even raised his glass, smiling, while Mr. Ashford tried to slide a hand under my hem.

"Ms. Sinclair is here in earnest today, Mr. Ashford. She'll finish this drink. Please, drink as you like," Daniel said.

He pushed a full glass of 52-proof liquor toward me.

I stared at Daniel. He smiled, but his eyes stayed cold and threatening. It was as if he were saying that only by drinking would Mom's life-saving money be secured.

I picked up the glass and drained it in one go. The burning liquid scorched down my throat, twisting my insides. Mr. Ashford cheered loudly and took the opportunity to wrap an arm around my waist.

Daniel nodded in satisfaction, then turned to Kimberley. "Learn from this. This is what professionalism looks like."

I fought through the sharp pain in my stomach and pushed Mr. Ashford's hand away. "I need to use the restroom."

Even someone made of steel would have been near their breaking point by then. However, I didn't go there to vomit. Once inside a stall, I quickly pulled out my phone and sent a message to a headhunter. "I accept the offer. I'll sign tonight."

Then, I saved the full recording I had just made. It was solid proof that Daniel had forced an employee to drink with a client.

After everything was done, I splashed cold water on my face and looked at my pale reflection. I told myself that this kind of life was over.

I never expected what I would see when I returned to the private room. My bag had been thrown on the floor, and my phone was vibrating. The screen displayed "Emergency Center of Central City Hospital".

Kimberley was holding my phone, her finger hovering over the red end-call button. When she saw me walk in, a malicious grin spread across her face, and she firmly pressed the red end-call button right before my eyes.

In the backstage lounge, while I was touching up my makeup in front of the mirror, Victor walked in. He locked the door and shut out the noise from outside."Are you tired?" he asked. He massaged my shoulders with just the right amount of pressure."I'm alright, though my face feels stiff from all the smiling," I replied.I leaned into his arms, savoring the rare moment of tranquility.Victor suddenly dropped to one knee and produced a ring as if by magic. "Ms. Sinclair, the business deal is done."He looked up at me, his eyes shining. "Now, can we talk about our marriage? Although my net worth doesn't match yours anymore, I'm willing to be your stay-at-home husband. I'll do everything—the laundry, the cooking, and taking care of the kids."My eyes welled up with tears. It had been such a long, hard journey to get here. I held out my hand and let him slide the ring onto my ring finger. It fit perfectly.I pulled him up and whispered in his ear, "Mr. Kane, I've received your sinc

Daniel was sentenced to three years in prison, and Kimberley received a one-year sentence as his accomplice. The once-mighty Carter Group officially declared bankruptcy.I acquired the core assets of Daniel's company at a low price and renamed it "NewLife Technology". This was not just a revival of the business, but a personal rebirth for me.After I had drunk too much at the celebration banquet, Victor drove me home.Suggestive jazz music flowed through the car. Fueled by alcohol, I finally asked the question I had long kept buried in my heart. "Victor, why did you help me? Don't tell me it was just to poach me. I don't buy it."Victor remained silent. He pulled over to the curb, took a yellowed photograph from his wallet, and handed it to me.By the streetlight, I could clearly make out the photo. It showed the university library ten years ago, with a young woman napping at a desk and half a loaf of bread beside her. That young woman was me.Victor's voice was soft, carrying a

Daniel was taken away for investigation, and his company's capital chain collapsed entirely. To save themselves, Daniel and Kimberley turned on each other. Seeking to escape conviction, Kimberley leaked that Daniel had instructed her to falsify the accounts. She also exposed his private ledgers documenting his tax evasion and used them to threaten him for money.Daniel flew into a rage and got into a physical fight with Kimberley in the office. An employee recorded the scene and uploaded it online. The once-rising CEO had now become the laughingstock of the internet. But it didn't end there. Daniel's insufferable mother, Amanda Bradford, stormed to the front of Victor's office building. She unfurled a banner and wailed at the top of her lungs. "Margaret Sinclair is an ungrateful traitor! She ruined my son! She deserves a miserable death! Everyone, look! This shameless woman is conspiring with her lover to destroy her own boyfriend!"The gathering onlookers pointed and whispered.

The next day was the industry summit, the city's most prestigious business gathering. In previous years, Daniel would do whatever it took to squeeze into this event, keeping me up all night as he helped me prepare his speeches. This year, however, I wore a haute couture gown Victor had given me and stood at the center of attention while linking arms with him.Under the spotlights, countless people stepped forward to toast me."Ms. Sinclair, I heard that you joined Kane Group. We look forward to working with you in the future.""Ms. Sinclair is a legendary professional. Mr. Kane certainly has a keen eye for talent."Major clients who had once been Daniel's switched their allegiances one after another. They never cared about Daniel's shell company; they only respected my reputation.Just then, a commotion broke out at the entrance. Daniel and Kimberley tried to force their way inside, both looking completely disheveled. Daniel had dark circles under his eyes and was covered in roug

Daniel cowered the moment he saw Victor. Victor was a legend in the industry, a titan Daniel desperately wanted to flatter but could never even meet.Daniel stammered, his arrogance vanishing instantly, replaced by a sycophantic grin. "M-Mr. Kane? What brings you here? This is just an internal company dispute—"Victor didn't even spare him a glance. He looked down to adjust my collar, his voice gentle, as if he were soothing a child. "Did they mistreat you?"I shook my head, though my eyes stung slightly. "No, I just fought back."Victor chuckled softly, but his gaze turned icy the moment he faced Daniel. "Mr. Carter, who did you say you were going to blacklist?"Cold sweat poured down Daniel's face as he pointed at Victor and me, his fingers trembling. "W-What's the relationship between you two? Margaret Sinclair! So you already had another job lined up! This is corporate espionage!"He acted as if he had found a lifeline, trying to take the moral high ground to accuse me.I ho

The entire room went silent. Kimberley's face turned ghostly pale in an instant, and the wine glass in her hand fell and shattered on the floor with a sharp crack. Daniel's smile froze, then his face darkened. What I played was a recording of Kimberley promising kickbacks to clients, leaking the company's bottom prices, and even embezzling corporate funds to secure her deals.Daniel lunged forward in fury, trying to snatch the microphone away. "Turn it off! Shut it down right now!"I sidestepped his rush and grabbed a thick stack of documents nearby. It was all the evidence of Kimberley's falsified accounts that Victor had given me the night before.A sharp smack echoed through the hall. I slapped the documents into Daniel's face. The papers flew into the air, fluttering down in a storm of white."Mr. Carter, take a good look at your new director. Is this the 'performance' you're so proud of?" I asked.Daniel scrambled to catch a few pages, his hands trembling more violently with
